Have you heard of scholarship displacement/does your school participate? Comment below!

Some colleges are giving 100 percent tuition guarantees but these do not cover room and board. Then if you get a private scholarship they will take from any aide they are giving for tuition. However, some colleges will place a private scholarship check towards room and board if the check /or a letter from donor specifies it is to be used for housing so that student does not loose aide.

I was told by a University in Michigan that any scholarship money received would be taken directly from the needs based scholarship money. Still leaving $9,000 of loans and work study money in her package. It sounds like you say they shouldn't be able to do this?

This is called "Displacement" and many universities do this, unfortunately. Schools usually find out about a student's scholarships since they are sent directly to the school, and not the student.

Hello! Thank you for the helpful video :) . I have a question regarding exceeding the COA. Let's say my school is expensive and has a COA of 80,000, and I received 75,000 in merit scholarships / financial aid from the school so I only owe 5,000. So are my outside scholarships not supposed to exceed by $300 the original 80,000 COA listed on the school's website, or my own COA which would be 5000?

Typically, if your schools COA is $80,000, you can not exceed that $80,000 in aid (between outside scholarships and financial/merit aid). Most schools give you a little wiggle room, depending on the school, of about $300 or so of that COA. So really, your aid shouldn't exceed $80,300 (but again, that does vary from school to school, so make sure you check with your financial aid office).

Love your channel! I have a question in regards to what happens with scholarship displacement when the scholarship is paid out from an organization (church, club, organization etc.) as a stipend. Are stipends generally handled in the same way as scholarships in terms of scholarship displacement?
@TheScholarshipSystem

Stipends are usually paid out directly to the student. Most schools expect students to notify them of any awards paid directly to the student and will take it into consideration for financial aid purposes. You will have to check your school's policy.
