You don't need to join the Army to enjoy the many benefits of doing a proper push-up. A basic push up is an effective way to strengthen the chest and arm muscles and can be easily scaled as you get stronger. Simple push-ups require no equipment other than your own bodyweight and your arms, and they can be done anywhere there is a firm surface with enough space for you to stretch out flat in. Assume a face-down prone position on the floor. Keep your feet together. Your weight should be on your chest. Position hands palms-down on the floor, approximately shoulder width apart. They should be about next to your shoulders, with your elbows pointed towards your toes. If you are on a relatively cushioned surface, such as a carpeted floor, you may also support yourself on your fists between the first and second knuckles for a greater challenge. If you are on a less forgiving surface, consider investing in some push-up grips, (they look like handles you put on the floor). Curl your toes upward (towards your head). The balls of your feet should touch the ground. Raise yourself using your arms. At this point, your weight should be supported by your hands and the balls of your feet. Make a straight line from your head to your heels, and contract your abdominals to keep your hips from sagging. This position is called a "plank," which is used for other various exercises.[1] This is the beginning and the end position of a single push up. Pick the type of push up that works best for you. There are actually three types of basic push up variations that use different muscles. The difference is where you place your hands while in the plank position. The closer your hands are together, the more you will engage your triceps. The wider apart they are, the more you will engage your chest. Regular: your hands should be slightly wider than your shoulders. This works both your arms and your chest. Diamond: put your hands close together in a diamond shape, keep them directly under your chest. This will require you to engage your arms much more than a standard push up.[2] Wide-arm: place your hands a good way's out from your shoulders. This version mostly works the chest and requires less strength in the arms. wikihow teaches everything wow

I’m so confused. Do wide push ups mean wrong form? I first started with 5 with improper form and now I can do 20 with back straight and feet locked. But I’m doubting it’s the right form again. :( My goal is to reach 100 by the end of this year. Please help. I’m 17 and weigh 63.3 kilos.
@gary83882 жыл бұрын
Wide press up not wrong but not way Royal Marines do them on this test
@think14132 жыл бұрын
I mean nothing is really “wrong” it all depends on the standards that are set if the standard is elbows inside chest to the fist than for this specific time that is “correct” form for you to get to 100 push ups the easiest way is to do pushups every day for a month but do different variations because at the end of the day you need a developed chest , triceps , back combo to be able to do more reps the reason why it might seem easier to do wide pushups rather than closer or shoulder width it’s because of the muscles that are needed to do that specific type of pushup so mainly wide pushups hit the outer part of the chest (pectoralis) while colser pushups or shoulder width puships hit the inner part of the chest (pectoralis major) now all being said the easiest way is to get your number high is to do as many normal pushups as you can than get to you knees and do as many knee pushups as you can than do incline pushups as many as you can and progress through different variations all having to do with a push motion it’s also important to know that if you weight train you’ll get your numbers higher quicker by targeting the specific muscles needed to perform the pushup in a more isolated manner. Do pushups strictly for a month with this plan: 10 normal pushups ( do knee ones if you can’t do normal) 10 wide pushups ( do knee ones if you can’t do normal) 5-10 close grip(diamonds) or tricep pushups And repeat for 1 month every day or every other day until you can do 50-60 pushups than you can follow a strict military program for 6 months to increase the numbers like crazy.

4:39 the guy in the middle is dropping his pelvis, which during pushups reduces the percentage of your body weight that is lowered and raised by your shoulders. I don't know what the standards for this test are, perhaps they permit this, but we're to keep our body in a generally straight line during the US Army's fitness test (APFT), and otherwise, "proper pushup form" dictates a similar expectation. The other two guys, I believe, were the better athletes.
@KO-fh4vn5 жыл бұрын
At any rate, those last three are nonetheless all impressive. I usually crank out 85+/- pushups on the APFT, however, we are given 120 seconds, these guys kept to a pace of approximately 1 pushup per second for a minute, and I personally usually do 55 within the first minute. 75 is all you need for a maximum score at any age for the APFT, so these guys likely would have blasted that 👏 that is to say kudos and well done.

15 lads started with a target of 60 press ups, 3 completed it. That means 80% of them failed to achieve the maximum score. Just shows its not as easy as people think.
@DustyMagma3 жыл бұрын
Just tried this. For background, I can knock out 50 or 60 pushups doing a set as fast as I can. I do at least 60 pushups every night (in sets as needed) But this strict form no momentum method is humbling. I scored a solid D on this test, 40/60. I'm deeply ashamed of myself. Like a parent discliping a bad child, I whipped myself on the back with my belt.

So what happens to the lads that didn’t hit 60 rep mark? Are they out? I been doing push ups for a very long time since it’s a crucial part of boxing but we do them differently at high speeds and we never completely stretch our arms what makes them much easier, I could do 60-70, then I tried these Royal marines ones with a beep and the required form, only managed 40. I feel bad, been doing sports all my life hahaha
@voiceofreason1622 жыл бұрын
Navy man. For a punishment for being smug, I was ordered to do 20. Then when I got up without breaking sweat, do 30 more. He stopped when I didn't breathe hard. Back then I was 42 years younger and thought nothing of running 10 miles. Enjoy it while you're young.

I don't understand why they're so busy doing group push-ups. In 2010, I served in the motorized infantry in Russia. We had a standard penalty of 50 push-ups for each violation or remark. After 2 weeks of service in the army, it became routine. I did over 1,000 push-ups in one day and felt a little more tired than usual. But what really comes hard is marathons in combat gear. Good luck, guys!
