i got into the business at the start of the year by accident i just wanted to keep my own car looking mint... i started doing family and frineds cars and now even do some of their friends stuff... i have what u would call a station wagon and some decent hobbiest equipment some pro stuff but no steam cleaner or extractor... everyone has always said wow my car looks better then when i purchased it... having the top stuff helps but i find just have decent enough stuff to get the job done to the standard the customer wants

After 24 years of detailing Florida to North Carolina. After 6 years running mobile near Charlotte.. The detailing business does not produce enough revenue. To properly pay yourself, employees, or putting capital back in the business. Another detailer is always there. Solving customer problems for pennies on the dollar. Tread carefully.

Same, looking for my exit route. Obviously Oscars likes is marketing and making videos, cause detailings old after 6 months. After 5 years, you wonder what the future looks like if it doesn’t include a wrap shop. The average salary, even here in Southern California, being higher than most states, most people gasp at an $80 basic wash with wheels & tires & spray wax. What successful business is grasping after $80 sales that take an hour to complete? 1.5 hours on a clay bar & paste wax for $140 is jack shit, paying yourself and taxes and gas and chemicals and nothing else. landscapers triple our income. Appliance sales or repair is far more profitable and necessary.

@Ichabod_Jericho Try submitting a resume for entry level management in the automotive or food service industry. Once you move to a store manager after a couple years you'll make 60k or better in the air conditioning. You have that management experience now in your business. Sending prayers you're way

you can make 100k a year by yourself with minimal overhead

@@Bchaffer79 100K Net or Gross? 100K after taxes in CA means you made about $125-$130,000. Do you really see yourself booking and selling at least 130 full ceramic coating jobs? How about 400 clay bar + wax packages? There’s nothing about this that’s profitable. Your local coffee shop is making $500/hour+, compared to the amount of advertising and labor you’ll do for that same amount in detailing.

I've only put out a few feelers this spring to get an understand of potential customers and I've noticed a pattern that is discouraging. That is I have realized that those who have inquired about the work do not respond back when I cannot give them a definitive amount for services. I prefer to assess on a per vehicle basis because not one project is created equal. I am not setup for upselling but they may be the way I am gonna have to approach this.

Although I agree with the results outlook, some of the products and equipment mentioned solves that problem for the customers. A hot water extractor from my experience is the best tool for soiled and stained seats. An effective wheel cleaner cuts the lead time in half and gives you more time to service more customers.

The only problem I have from completely starting my business is my full time job. I should quit so I have more time to actually take in customers any day but I got bills to pay. Does it mean I need to take a chance and do it?

Not bad, I’m telling you that if I could tell myself 5 years ago, you just need rinseless wash & strong prespray for the car. Acidic or alkaline, whatever. Alkaline for bugs. Pressure washer for the wheels but I’m telling myself don’t ever worry about micromarring and sell the value you’re giving. Don’t upgrade to foam unless your clay barring & iron removing.

A small pancake compressor does wonders, I've been using one for 1.5 years for mobile details. Better than nothing and doesn't take up much room.

You'll get there. Takes time to get those customers and reviews. While it's slow I try to build my website better with SEO. Look at videos to get idea's and I've reached out to more established detailers to network that definitely helps since they send you excess work they can't take on. It's tough but keep at it man 😊
