About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

Don't get discouraged, I just recently discovered your channel, subscribed and have been eating up every video, immensely informative and extremely helpful, I started by editing and making my own music videos mashing up popular characters and songs I enjoy, I've been working on a fan film for awhile, slowly buying props, costumes, ect, finished the script and based it around locations near me within my means and kinda storyboarded the scenes mentally in my head in the locations, which should in theory make the actual filming process easier lol, can't wait to get the cameras rolling on it, my music videos even got some attention from the lead singer of one of the bands, and we became friends and message each other from time to time, so once I have some footage shot and put together a trailer of sorts, I'm going too reach out to him to see if he's interested in scoring the film and possibly a theme song for the main character, when it's done I'll be sure to share it with you, I can't wait to see the next video you make and the next film you make!!

The flat rate one really did f* me up! I usually do that for small little projects that I know won't take long. I have a project that should have taken like 2 weeks from what I estimated, and it's been 6 months! I'll definitely start using day rates for this kind of projects in the future. The main bottleneck has been waiting for feedback, and also waiting for some assets that were missing.
@PHlophe
@PHlophe 2 жыл бұрын
wait a minute you actually took on a project on a flat rate basis and your ass's been sat on it for 2 weeks ? Chiiiiiiile ! I'm gon' pray for you .
@SUALVI
@SUALVI 2 жыл бұрын
@@PHlophe LOL! not 2 weeks! 6 months! well, I quoted it on a per minute basis since it's not a complicated thing; presentation & software demos basically. I estimated I could get all of it done within 2 weeks. Only have like 30hs on it which I'm still profitable and we only need a couple of minor things on a bunch of them. But yea, I've been trying to push the client to get everything that's needed, that way I can get it all done in one go. It's part of the process, not everything goes perfectly haha. My worst one when starting out was charging $70 for a lyric video that ended up taking like 20 hours! x.x Never again! haha but I guess it's a way to find out the type of projects that one enjoys working on.

For anyone, anywhere (well, US based, since the survey is 95% US), if you have questions about RATES, look to the BCPC Rate Survey. Doesn't matter if you're an AE, an Editor, a Post-PA, a Colorist, 0 years exp. 15 years exp., know your worth. The BCPC Annual Rate Survey has over 2000 Post Production Professionals' Rates to easily find out what the market currently is paying for your intended position. In regards to the Cold Outreach stuff, it's pivotal. Zach Arnold goes really in depth on how to properly handle that, and it's been a lifesaver.

Freelancing is difficult, especially because a lot of people will try and talk you into free stuff (one guy said that graphic design wasn’t real work so I shouldn’t be charging at all), but once you’ve got a solid portfolio and understand how to turn down the guys looking for freebies instead of entertaining them and wasting your time, you’ll get much further in your freelance career

Been freelancing as an editor for 10+ years at this point. I occasionally take on flat-rate projects under the agreement that there is no deadline (within reason). That way on down days I have something I can work on, but without the pressure of having to turn down full-rate gigs. Those also tend to be jobs that I can do with my eyes closed. When the cheques come in they feel like a bonus. As far as 8-hour days....in a city like NYC (where I work) that wouldn't be easy to negotiate. A 10-hour window is often necessary because client feedback can take time, especially now we're living in a more remote landscape. That being said I would guess that in 10 hours I probably work 5 on average.
