Around 90% of the posts I've set we're done this way. We built 3 sets of privacy fence in West, Texas. All of them are still standing and in pretty good shape, even after the fertilizer plant blew up.

Ive been doing this for decades, 12" hole 24" deep, quick set sakrete(red bag) packed in with a piece of rebar and watered well, fences Ive done this way still survive after numerous tropical storms and a half dozen hurricanes...one tip is I always dip the post bases in a five gallon bucket of roofers lap cement a day or two before installation, this preserves the posts quite well.

A couple of the major fence contractors I worked for in southeast Pennsylvania did it this way (dry tamped quickcrete). The gate posts were always set in mixed concrete.

We use postcrete here in the UK (our equivalent to quickcrete) and it works well. I typically fill the hole a third full of water and then add the postcrete - tamp it down / mix and then add another little bit of water on top. Usually use 2 x 20kg bags per post.

I live in the deep deed south all I do is tamp it down tight and I can start hanging boards on it although I don’t think I would try to do it like that now we’re having a pretty bad drought and the ground is extremely dry it’s usually pretty damp.

I've set more than I can remember this way,one important thing,the post can't be moved,if it breaks the wet bond it's done,then a mix of pour stone will fix it.

Its what we use in the UK, works really well. We call it Postcrete, and its only really used for setting fence posts and seems to do the job well.

If I enclose wooden yardistry gazebo legs inside a paver column, then will the wood rot inside the paver column? I am told not to enclose wooden legs inside paver columns , as the wood needs to breathe.

I avoid all of this controversy by not burying the fence at all. I lay it on the ground alternating a board every other section in a diagonal pattern. Lasts forever. The oldest I've seen is about 300 years old. (For all you triggered folk this is called in many places a zig zag fence. Started in rocky New England and popular in rocky western states.)

How to set concrete around your wood post to guarantee it will rot at ground level 😂

Maybe that's why they said put 4 inches of gravel in the bottom before you add the concrete

@Bob-gn8ph just finish off the top so it doesn't hold water. Doesn't need to be an expert finish, just sloped enough to disperse water.

@@csvinylfence6958 well if that works for you have at it, it only makes sense that wood absorbs water, water flows downhill and pools in the cup you made with the concrete that's my thoughts anyway have a great day
