This put a smile on my face. I used to be subscribed to that Jeff guy till one day he was doing duct (ventilation) work and a pro told him he was doing something wrong and it made a lot of sense. The guy was saying to put the male vent pipe towards air flow and the female against the air flow like that you get less potential for air leak. It depends on the bracket design. If it's designed with square holes on both sides of the bracket then you can turn the bolt either way. If it has a square hole on one side and a round hole on the other, then you only have one way for the carriage bolt to go in the bracket.

We just used gravel for our front yard fence posts about 10 years ago. They have zero issues.

I have wood posts that are in the ground without concrete that have been installed by the previous owner over 22 years ago and are not rotting. Not saying this is correct.

All throughout these comments, I’m reading about making sure that the posts are level. What?? Level? Are people laying them on their sides? Or do they want to stand them up and make sure that the fence posts are “plumb” ?

Let you know what I would do differently? I’d do it correctly. If I didn’t know how, I would learn.

What sealer do you recommend? Oil or water? I would normally want oil based which penetrates into the wood. I saw Olympic Elite stain which is water based. They say a 25 year warranty but I doubt it'd last that long.

With us getting such mixed weather, quite a good lot of rain... would it be a good idea to paint say 'bitumen' paint to the bottom say two and a half feet of each post to help prevent water penetration OR would I be better off buying concrete posts ? I look forward to hearing from your good self as you know loads more about fencing than I do.

Joe, what is your opinion of insecticides added to stains? Can it be added to Expert Stain if feasible? We are looking into getting a new fence after our 15 year old fence has ravaged by carpenter bees, I went scorched earth on them with Bifen but after 15 years , non stained, its time for a new fence. I want to do it right this time with a good stain and maybe something to keep the carpenter bees at bay. Thanks for your advice.
