Exactly! Those wheels look tiny and hard. They should be large and soft for beginners outside. Probably the nuts are incorrectly tightened also. And just in general, cheap skates are... what you pay for.

You got what you paid for. Quads outside are a blast when they are made properly and you have the right bearings and wheels. Soft wheels preferably. And you really should have a helmet. But I kind of understand the feelings you express in this video. I tried ice skates once and absolutely hated them. Cheap rink rentals with dulled blades on chopped up ice is probably quite comparable to $40 skates with plastic trucks and bad bearings.

Hi. I'm a quad skater that took up ice. I think ice skating is so much harder. Ice skaters tell me quad skating is so much harder. I think it's what you start with that is more comfortable. My rocker/ pivot point is the same on both my ice and roller skates so that helps and can be achieved. Also an adjustable toestop can help you feel like it hits in the same place as the pick. The trick is to adjust the toestops to one fingers height from the floor. So slide your hand under and your finger should just fit between the floor and the toestop. But you have to get the pivot point right first. I would love to see you in a higher quality quad skate. Maybe a quad plate on an old ice boot? Quad boots are softer but that set is ridiculous🤣. They look like they have plastic plates which really are a death trap. Maybe skates US would send you a pair? I know you're in a different country but I've seen them sponsor skaters. But I love this video and all your other content! Thank you for sharing!

Interesting! I struggled with rollerblading, in an attempt to learn ice skating, which I find easier. Out of all 3 forms, I find rollerblading the hardest, and quad skating the easiest. Since I currently have no access to an ice rink, I switched to quad skates to develop the strength to skate on one foot, since I'm having trouble doing it on rollerblades. I hope it's still a good way to cross train!

I am also a quad skater who is taking up ice skating - I don't really think I'm good at it enough at ice skating to say which is easier overall, but I am picking it up a lot faster than I did roller skating. I find turns to be a lot easier on the ice due to there being less friction. I still feel like I'm going to die every time I do a turn on quads, but on ice it just kind of happens. I'm not jumping on ice yet either, but the ice skates being lighter seems like a bonus point too (granted, you have a much smaller area to land on).

You just need a better pair of skates. Edges are actually easier on quads in my opinion than ice with a quality plate and boot. I artistically skate on ice, inline and quad. I keep my boot profile the same (Edea Ice Fly) on all 3 and this helps a lot. Crossovers feel a bit wimpy on quads since you never really get that strong/secure edge feeling. Jumps are similar, but those quads are heavy. Some jumps like the loop, you need to take a different entrance to. Spins are much more difficult on quads, but with the right wheels they are more manageable. Your equipment makes a HUGE difference, but unfortunately (just like ice) the good stuff is quite pricey. I have tried my daughters skates, which are not quite as nice as my own (but much nicer than the ones you tested out), it feels totally different...anything more than a waltz jump on those things is out of the question.

I love this! I am a rollerskater and the struggle is real 😆 but i love the way skating makes me feel. Amazing. You do need good skates. I have moxi's. I tried transitioning from iceskates to quad skates during lock down because the ice rink was closed... it was pretty hard and I still wonder if I should have tried inline instead. This makes me so happy! I'm a quad skater transitioning to ice, and it is SO different. And frustrating! I find ice scary because it's easier - you don't need as much momentum to do stuff, so it's wobblier, does that make sense? All the terms are the same, and to some extent the technique, but the feel is just not the same, at, all.

Echoing what others have said, those are toy skates and should be avoided. (I understand cost is an issue and I wish semi-decent skates are affordable for everyone!) A lot of the moves you tried eg slalom etc are totally doable on quads if you have decent skates that are set up correctly and on smoother ground like a tennis court or skating rink. In fact I think you won't find it all that hard to switch to quad with the right setup and surface. Well done for using safety equipment, it's important for learners to use them especially outdoors, there's no shame in it. If learners are reading this, get yourself a helmet too!

I grew up doing both quads and inlines, so when I started ice skating in my 20s, the skills from inlines translated well. However, even though ice/inline and quads are fairly different, it truly does come down to the quality of your equipment. I upgraded my goodwill quads and inline and could not believe the difference that just changing the bearings and wheels made. Blew my mind the skills I unlocked after having the right wheels for outdoor versus indoor skating!

Is it just me? I feel restricted/constricted in quads? Even with "professional" skates, even at a roller rink, and even with the action nuts loosened. Then theres the issue with the wheels getting interlocked. No matter what wheels I use, I still feel like there's grit under my wheels, that I don't have under my blades. I'm used to pulling my iceskates together, where they touch eachother. I thought I would just skate in quads... The quads told me, "not today sucka!!!" Even with inlines, I feel like I'm constantly fighting the wheel's pull.

I have never used skates like that (except rentals), but when I want to turn sharp I just put the foot in the same direction I am turning on the back 2 wheels and then lean into it. So if I want to turn left I put my left foot in front of the right on the back 2 wheels and when I want to turn I just quickly lean into the turn while moving the left foot left.

I tried to have a go at quad skating after learning how to skate on ice. I had a lot of the same issues as you when I tried them out the first time. I loosened the trucks and wheels a little bit to see if it was any better but within about 5 seconds of putting them back on I had fallen backwards and broken both bones in my wrist. I'm now two days post-surgery and wondering what to do with these skates I've spent over £100 on because I'll certainly never be putting them on my feet again.

Get yourself a quality pair of quads - you're worth it - and find a decent sports hall and you'll be 80/90% as comfortable as you are on ice in a matter of weeks, judging by how well you skated in the inlines. I'm the world's worst skater and I can switch between ice and inlines without thinking now.

Alexis Thora's ROLLER SKATES VS. ROLLERBLADES - Which One Is Best For You? MOXI Roller Skates - K2 Inline Skates is a good compare and contrast between the tradition quad and inline skates. Lily Pad's Ice skater tries quad skates! Shows the Sure Grip quads that are a pretty good quality that are less than the MOXI skates. But yeah, you're better off with the rentals than the cheapest skates. Plus, the bigger wheels are better for both quads and inline if you really want speed and balance to do a lot of the street tricks on. Quads are a little better for artistic skating, similar to ice skating. You can find competitive roller skating that does very similar competitive skating as ice skating as well.

Honestly there's a lot that I could recommend here. Loosen up your wheels if they're not rolling well. Gummy wheels are harder to roll than harder wheels but they're like that so you don't fall on every Crack and crevice. Try rink skating with harder wheels. Also, cheaper quads are going to feel garbo. You're better off using rink skates. Hope that helps!

You get what you pay for!! This is where, one must, first to their research BEFORE purchasing roller skates( quad). The wheels are what are the most important aspect of rolling skating. There are wheels for indoor skating & wheels for outdoor skating!! Indoor wheels will have a harder surface. Outdoor wheels will have a softer service. From what I can see, you have indoor skates & this is why your wheels are not MOVING & even the best quad roller skaters would fall on their ass as well. I USED reidell speed skates back in the late 70's & they are still the best when getting a good quad skate. Wheels are a different subject. That in itself, takes much research. Once you understand how wheels work differently on outdoor & indoor surfaces, than you know which wheels to buy!! Basically, outdoor wheels will not work in an indoor rink. Just like indoor wheels will not work on the outdoor surface.

Mate, fantastic video. I’ll begin by thanking you for being yet another human to demonstrably disprove the fantastic proclamation made to me when I was 11, as a 12 year old girl (who skated regularly on both quads and ice) told me with confidence “if you can ice skate, you can roller skate”. Mind you, she wasn’t fabulous on quads. By 16 years old, I was a skate guard/referee at a quad rink. I’m Olympic form and have never been defeated in speed skating. Short of centrifugal prowess (as I do not skate in your style since I’ve no low center of mass), I can do most things on quads an ice skater could do. My first time on ice was similar to your first time on quads. But my problem was both genetic and no experience. Your challenge is neither. You could be brilliant on quads in a few hours. The issue for you is solely your skates. First, the wheels aren’t rolling, so loosening the mechanical wheel nuts will help you stop convulsing your constant velocity. Their rotation should never be that yanky. I experienced that for the first time 2 years ago at a brand new rink I’d never visited before. I knew it wasn’t their floor as many skaters were gliding smoothly. I’m wholly convinced your skates are rubbish, which you should never hesitate to say. Yeah, it might sound like just an excuse for you to blame them, but blame is properly placed. They suck. And of course, a brilliant move to adjust the trucks because that is truly 80% of the problem here, the other 20% being the rubbish skates. How you knew to check the trucks is THE mystery here. Only I am supposed to know that. And as a referee, I not only began my shift by handing out the rentals to kids and adults, but when they came to me for advice in skating, it was 10% method instruction I gave them along with 90% attention to adjusting their trucks. For YEARS, I adjusted skates for thousands of people. If you do quads again, tighten the back truck more than the front. There should be no “slap” when the trucks are wiggled back and forth, yet the front trucks should not be OVER tightened to where there isn’t a certain relaxed margin of movement when the wheels are firmly fulcrumed back and forth. Get them tight enough to avoid moving over about 3/4” of firmly-gripped ‘see-saw’ margin when wiggled with a firm hand. Else, the rear trucks, different story. They must give almost NO movement. (Tip : even they may be over tightened. Old fashioned skates with rubber washers would at times be tightened so badly that it deformed the washers. Which required loosening, pressured reshaping, followed by a softer re-tightening in order to compensate.) Conclusion : adjusting both sets of trucks will help you steer - navigate - your quads. If this isn’t done, not even expensive skates will allow control over your wheels. Bottom line : your sub-par performance was not your fault in the least. You’re better than you know. And will learn faster than anyone. Summary : front wheel trucks, fairly firmly tight. Rear trucks, very firmly tightened.

You seem to have most of the basis of the technique down - it's the skates that are holding you back. You should try again with some decent skates and you would be fine at it. Those wheels do NOT look like they're made for outside (bigger, more gummy wheels would probably suit you better in the beginning unless your surface is 100% smooth), and you're way too strong for that boot, I could see it bending. Much like figure skating equipment matters, so does roller skating equipment! You didn't give yourself a fair chance by getting the "cheapest skates money can buy"

Dear Coach: your quads are very poor. Roller skaters have for ever been doing on quads what you do on ice! The greatest teacher and impressario of ice dance Joseph Carroll (Iceland Rink in NYC) taught the first roller dance champions even though he could not skate on rollers. One night (in the later 1930s) Joseph Carroll put-on a pair of roller skates, tried to do a 3-turn and almost killed himself and never tried to roller skate again.

Your “impression”/thoughts about roller skates are complete BS: you DID NOT feel what it is like to skate on roller skates with this piece of Uber garbage. I felt them as foreign as you did. Normal rollerskates ARE different but NOT restricting like this piece of junk that doesn’t even roll. In fact rollerskates roll with the same ease as you on ice if the surface is smooth. I’ve seen videos of figureskaters from the 80’s on rollerskates doing EVERYTHING that you do on ice (I mean EVERYTHING), I think it was a documentary called “roller mania” or something like this. One section of it is about three figure skaters on rollers in LA. Cheers
