The song is an old Bluegrass classic, so the crackle at the beginning is meant to sound like an old phonograph. The didgeridoo sound is meant to be a mouth harp, also known as a Jew's-harp or jaw-harp, which is common to the genre and period.

@@janhankins911 I don't think Geoff has actually got as good a range. Apparently subharmonics, which Geoff does better than even Tim, are actually performed an octave higher than they sound like they are at. Adam Rupp, wife beater shirt and dark suspenders, "percussion", "harmonica", "record crackle" and sometimes tenor. Austin Brown, light shirt and medium red/brown vest, tenor with a darker tone and initial lead on this song. Rob Lundquist, overalls and full beard, tenor with a brighter tone.

@@sallyintucson Yeah, I think the British call it a vest. The U.S. underwear companies call it an A-Shirt, probably because it is kind of A shaped with the missing sleeves. Hollywood movies commonly presented abusive husbands as overweight and wearing a simple white tank top, so it picked up the ugly name and was sort of symbolic, like the bad cowboy in the black hat. There's a lot of terminology from the 1940's-1970s that is a bit crude. For example, look up the mnemonic for the electronics "resistor code". It has 2 versions : the rude and the rude+racist.

First singer with the awesome hat & accent is Austin Brown and his tenor is out of this world (doesn't always have accent). Dungarees dude is Rob Lundquist and he's a tenor and is smooth as Butter with quite a bit of soul. Beatboxer is Adam Rupp who's just THE best with a nice tenor voice as well. He is one of the founders, his brother Chris was in Ring of Fire but left to do his own thing. Adam Chance (back behind Rob) is a baritone and bass and has the most beautiful voice. He's the one doing the mouth harp (not didgeridoo). They all get a chance! to shine as they share the solos. Enjoy this new rabbit hole.

I, too, love hearing Chance sing lead. Truthfully, I enjoy hearing ALL of them do so. Since Adam so rarely sings, it's a real treat to hear him do so (like his line in How Great Thou Art).

A Cappella is finally getting the attention it deserves! Pretty much anyone can learn to play and instrument but voices are something different. Home Free is incredibly talented, and this song doesn't even have Austin's highest or Tim's lowest range. Pentatonix was the first well known a cappella group and VoicePlay rounds out the top three. If you want a good idea of what VoicePlay can do try Hoist the Colours. They're a lot more theatrical than Home Free but have the same depth of sound--their bass also has a 5 octave range.

I agree. Each of the 5 a capella artists I love (Ptx, HF, VP, Voctave, and Peter Hollens) are all so different but each is so wonderful. I'm always so surprised how few people have heard Voctave and Peter Hollens. If you like Ptx, HF, and VP, you should try Voctave and Peter Hollens. My absolute favorite of all time is Voctave's "Disney Princess Medley". It's just wonderful--both musically and it really demonstrates how far women have come (waiting for the knight in shining armor to ride up and carry them off to a castle to women going out and fighting battles). As for Peter Hollens I recommend his collaboration with Tim Foust called "Misty Mountains" (from the movie "The Hobbit") and his collaboration with the entirety of Home Free on "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".

Home Free is the real deal. They won the NBC show the Sing Off in 2013. They are all tremendous singers. One change in the last 5 years. Chris Rupp (not in this video) was the tenor/baritone and founder with his brother Adam Rupp (beatboxer). He is in earlier videos with a cowboy hat or baseball cap. He left in 2016 to go solo. He was replaced by Adam Chance in the back row. Adam Rupp is the beatboxer. He’s amazing. Yes, he was doing the harmonica without a harmonica. Chance was doing the mouth harp sound (didgeridoo). Front row: Rob Lundquist (beard and glasses) tenor. Austin Brown (reddish hair) high tenor. Tim Foust (long dark hair) bass. Tim has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and sing up in the tenor range…not kidding. 3 of the boys are from the south. The other two are from Minnesota. They sing country but sing all genres. They sing a lot of covers but also write and sing their own stuff. Helplessly Hoping, Yours, I Can’t Outrun You, What We Ain’t Got, to hear more great harmonies. Good reaction Barry!
