I ordered ice skates from Amazon that many beginning skaters wear for group Learn to Skate USA ice skating lessons. I honestly see these particular brands of skates more often than any other! But, I also watch the beginner skaters that wear these skates struggle. I wanted to find out why! So, I tried them out along with rink rental skates and compare them to my own skates that I wear every day to coach in!

I remember my first lesson trying to skate and practice skating in the rental skates 😣 When I got my own pair of skates from Polar Skate shop, it became so much easier to balance and skate on the ice and I felt a lot more stable!

Somehow I got up to freestyle 1 as a kid with rentals (I guess that was my parent's decision?). But I'm starting to come back to skating as an adult and the rentals are a totally different beast. They used to be like normal skates, now they're these ski-boot-esque monstrosities with dull blades that hurt and cost 10x as much and somehow have both too much support and none at all. I think it's time to get fitted for skates if I want to skate at all.

I had a kid show up to skate school in those lake placid things, they were horrendous. The blades were like bananas, they were so much more curved then even hockey skates. Had to put her in rentals, and then she was able to actually stand up.

Very challenging to get LTS skaters to go to a pro shop. My adult students will go and sometimes I can get through to the parents of the little kids. But it's next to impossible to get the teens to understand "don't buy online" when that's been their normal. Hate the adjustable skates; the kids can't get their feet back together for learning proper stroking. Good video and comparisons!

My daughter and I both started with those American Athletic ones. We surprisingly made good bit of progress during those first two or three months even though the blade has virtually no rocker and breaks down quickly. Then the heels started to separate from the back of the boots, on both pairs. We are now both wearing Jacksons and we had to basically start from scratch and learn how to skate all over again in the better skates. I wish I had seen this video when you first put it out, haha

One more thing I forgot to mention is that I purchased the Jacksons online too, but only because there aren't other options where I live--and only after careful consideration, foot-measuring, and reading comments in online forums.

When I went skate shopping for the first time, somehow the pro shop only had American Athletics in stock. I got them and… literally cried at my first Learn to Skate class. Broke down in tears. They felt worse than the rentals that my rink had and I couldn’t even do anything with them on at my level at the time. Went emergency skate shopping at a different pro shop and they fitted me with some beginner level Jackson’s. Now that I realize that they’re a bit too wide for me, but even with the extra width it felt like night and day and my broken dreams were mended. I still have the American Athletics 😂couldn’t return them and don’t want to pass the misery down to another fellow human. A lesson to always do your homework before purchasing skates.
Жыл бұрын
A reputable specialty shop will not carry brands such as American Athletics for skates - those are usually available in sporting goods stores. Always inquire with your coach or the skating director about where to go because some "pro shops" at rinks are not the best places to go!

8:52 I’m curious as to why you say concertos aren’t appropriate for beginners? I find you cannot overboot in Edeas. Is it just because of the price?
10 ай бұрын
What I showed was Edea Concerto with a Gold Seal blade. That combination is not appropriate for beginners. But, honestly, why would a beginning skater want to spend that much on a Concerto with a beginner blade? Especially if that skater is a child that will outgrow their skates in about a year. While you can't overboot in Edea, Concerto is not really the most appropriate entry point for most beginner skaters.

I have to chime in here…….. i am a hockey player NOT a figure skater. I work at a rink and see mostly figure skaters as well as the LTS programs on the weekends. My point to this ramble is this………I will see a pair of skates to be sharpened (figure skates) and I see new skates with scuffs on the boots. I look at the blades and notice….these skates have NEVER even been sharpened. No wonder they are already scuffed, the poor kid went out on the ice with skates that have never been sharpened. Is this something that should be taught in the Learn to Skate classes before the student even gets on the ice? Not sure. I would like to hear your input. I realize that a lot of parents dont know about skates and just assume that they are sharpened at the factory. As im sure you thing this that you want the new skater to have a good first experience skating. Im not sure if you go over this in your videos, but, can you teach the parents or new skaters that yes in fact, if your not sure….have the skates sharpened for your first lesson or public session skating. Thanks to videos you make, I am constantly learning about figure skates, as well as the different runners too. Hockey skates? Yeah, Im always learning about the latest and greatest skates, now, im trying to learn about this ‘new’ field for me. I have a lot of respect for the figure skaters that come to my rink, as I see them skating a lot. I enjoy watching and learning about the different figure skates and what features they have. I know that the higher end skates cost as much or more than the custom hockey skates. I will continue to watch and learn from your videos, as some of the skaters ask questions that I want to be able to answer. Thank you.
2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, that is very common - skating on new skates that haven't been sharpened. Most programs do inform skaters and parents that all skates - including new ones - need to be sharpened. In my learn to skate profranm I send out a welcome letter to parents that spells this out. And all reputable skate brands come with instructions that tell you they need to be sharpened. For whatever reason, it still happens anyway! I can generally tell when skates have not been sharpened by the way the skater is skating and immediately inform the parents. That is true for most good coaches! That is why I bring up skate sharpening in every video - including this one - that I do about skates! Thank you for watching and commenting!

So, I wanted to ask your opinion, I am 40, have a bad back and plantar fasciitis in my feet, went ice skating for the first time last week, used the rinks skates and they hurt like heck, my feet still hurt. I have since bought the Jackson ultima freestyle with aspire blade. Did I make the right decision? Like I said, bad back and feet and I weigh 357 pounds also. I just wanted to add, there is a pro shop at the rink but it is small and there is no specialty shop around where I live.
Жыл бұрын
It's hard for me to say. Were they recommended to you during a professional fitting? Or, did you pick them out yourself online or off the shelf in a big box store? An adult with plantar fasciitis and other complications should definitely have a professional fitting. Jackson says that the Freestyle offers moderate support for skaters more than 80 lbs. but you may require additional support. That said the Freestyle is the highest support rating that Jackson offers in outfits with boots and blades. A more supportive Jackson skate would require that you purchase the boot and blade separately.

@AimeeRicca No, I did not have a professional fitting, I purchased them from Amazon, they have not shipped yet so i can still cancel the order. I reached out to the skating rink and even on my first time on the ice, I had a professional trainer and I didn't really get the support I hoped for. I told the trainer and the ice rink manager about my concerns and health issues. The trainer didn't even help me find the right skates. I was somewhat disappointed.

There are different levels of coaches. Many are casual while others are career coaches that will help you every step of the way. It’s worth asking for a PSA Rated coach to get a higher quality professional coach. Those coaches usually charge more than more casual coaches but it’s worth it for the level of support they will provide.

Have you watched my other video? Check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKrUnmOIat6ibdE Jackson Mystiques are not very supportive. However, they would be ok for a smaller skater that is just beginning. As you weigh more than 100 lbs, you should look at other options. The rink may not be the best place to go for a fitting. Definitely ask the skating director or a coach where to go! If you are looking at Jackson, it is reasonable that a starter pair should cost an adult sized person at least $180 - $270 USD. BUT, you cannot get fitted correctly at a shop, and then buy on Amazon as every model will fit differently. Plus, most Jackson skates perform best when they are heat molded and you cannot do that at home. Also, they will need to sharpened (they don't come sharpened) and many professional techs will include heat molding and your first sharpening with the purchase! Sharpening figure skates runs $20-40 each time. So, definitely ask where the best place to go is!

Hi Aimée! I am an adult and don't really want to go through the drama of buying multiple pairs of skates. I skated as a kid and want to get back into it after a long (15 year???) hiatus. I still have a lot of stuff, I would say I'm at a basic 5-6 level, and I'm mostly interested into getting back into footwork and spins, maybe a little jumping. Would it be absurd for me to just get some Jackson Elles and call it a day? The skate shop near me includes them in their "gold package" which I'm considering investing in. Thanks for the advice!
2 жыл бұрын
Have you been fitted and spoken with the skate tech about it? It depends on so many things! Height, weight, foot size, foot shape, and skill level. I I highly recommend that you speak with a coach or the rink's skating director and ask them if that shop is the best place to go - we have a few skate shops here and there's only one that I recommend. Then, make an appointment for fitting. As an adult you will likely keep the skates you get now for several years to come. The Elle may not be a long term investment, especially depending on your size.

@AimeeRicca, I dont understand why anyone would use rentals. I took a private lesson at Chelsea Sky Rink to try ice skating a few years back, and the rental skates were ill fitting enough they caused my toes to bleed. Although they were great to offer extra time if I wanted it, I declined because of the pain. I honestly couldn't see how anyone could use rentals for lessons unless they got very lucky. There are plenty of good skates out there for under $200 that adults could start out with for basic skills, though I personally just invested over $400 for my first pair, due to needing the extra support.

I went to ice rink for the first time last saturday. I was born in the southern seaside of Itay, so I have no confidence at all with winter sports, but...I married the king of the ices😂 that came from the frozen alps. After years, He convinced me to go with him to skate and for me it was love at first sight. I used rental skate and at the end of the day I was able just to stay tall on ice, move some steps/march march and slip. Not much, I know, but I am 39 and i fall only once exting😂 ( this is a big satisfaction because I was very scared and I thought I never put a feet on the ice😂😂). I had a lot of fun and I make a new friend in there, that invited me to see competition, so I'll go next saturday to watch them and maybe try again with rental skates (no pain/hurt for me but I can't judge for stability etc ) So...I have a question: as an absolute newbie, is it appropriate to buy my own skates? And when? My hubbie is pretty good and he's trying to teach me. I am also considering to take private lessons, but the rink is 1h and 30 far away from the city I live in, so i think i can go practice only once/two per week. (There is a very good pro shop in my city, so it'd be easy to try skates in person) Thanks in advance❤😊

Definitely avoid boots online. I bought American boots because I wanted to make sure I would stick with skating. Two weeks in and I broke the blade. Now I use them for off-ice flexibility training. They don't offer half sizes so I had to bulk up with socks which worked. I'm surprised they stopped me from pronating, I could feel it when walking in shoes that my ankles weren't rolling inwards. They are no where near as supportive as figure skating boots but they did build up my ankle strength quickly. I noticed my fast twitch muscles getting mildly sore. The toe pick is different too. After getting Jackson boots I had to relearn everything to prevent toe scratches because American has 1 less tooth. Even forward stroking I was tripping over the toe pick.
Жыл бұрын
I've heard that from a number of people about the American Athletic skates breaking in some way after only matter of weeks! Yes, the toe pick on many recreational skates, including rentals, is less pronounced and intentionally higher to tuck it out of your way. If skates don't have half-sizes, it's usually best to size down and wear thin socks. But remember that skate sizing is different from shoe sizing. Most skates run one or two sizes larger than your street shoe size. How are you using skates for off-ice training?
@thechefnextdoor
@thechefnextdoor Жыл бұрын
@ Any spin or spiral positions that require grabbing the blade. I only wear the skate on the free leg I'm training. I do the normal on-ice entrance as best I can then hold the stretch for 30 seconds, the last 10 seconds I try to sink into the stretch more. I only do these after training since they are mostly static stretches.

I have a video for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKrUnmOIat6ibdE In that video, I explain exactly how to make sure that they fit you correctly because skates must be tighter than regular shoes to balance over the blade correctly. Also, if you don't have a pro shop near you, how will you get them sharpened after every 20-30 hours of skating?

I remember my first time skating like 9 years back at aspen now it is called sportscare but same thing and the skates I used were so bad now I have gone through 5 pairs of hockey skates and have been playing hockey for a while and I see people at like free skates use these skates it just hurts me physically😂

As long as they are appropriate for your level and they don't need heat molding. They DO still need to be sharpened though!

What about a hand held sharpener just in case
Жыл бұрын
Not to sharpen your skates. That should only be used for emergencies to retouch your edges. You can not create or maintain a hollow into a blade with a handheld edger. New skates need to be professionally sharpened with the appropriate radius of hollow (RoH) before you skate on them!

Is this your first video from Sony and getting rid of GoPro?
Жыл бұрын
Nope! I had the ZVE-10 for about a month at the time that recorded this video. I didn't get rid of my GoPros tho! I have a GoPro Max, Hero 9, and Hero 10 - I still use them all for a variety of things.

Absolutely! It makes it so much harder to learn to skate when your equipment is inferior!

its awful but hilarious that i know exactly which rink you’re at (im from nnj and taking lts classes there now) and i know *exactly* how awful the rentals are. i had my first class last week and i have a polar skate appt in a week and a half, i cannot wait until i can get comfortable skates and hopefully i can actually learn

Truthfully, the rentals are usually that bad regardless of the rink! I'm glad you're getting fitted at Polar Skate Shop!

I have never heard of that brand until another viewer left me a comment about them on another video. I suggest that you stick with Jackson or Riedell skates that you have been fitted for. Have you watched this video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKrUnmOIat6ibdE

All these skates look awful... think it's comparable to people who go skiing with rental boots and then don't know why they can't do anything (I'm a skier). Buying properly fitted footwear is SO important and I'm so happy I traveled a couple hours to the Edea official dealer here to get fitted and buy my Edea skates there. I'm a beginner skater but I don't I'll develop proper skills & technique if I have the correct footwear, same thing as skiing.

@ I followed your advice, that's why having experts such as yourself who are so kind to share your expertise here on KZbin is super important! I kind of thought that maybe buying skates would be similar to buying ski boots (there are the awful ones, the "one type fits all" rentals and then there are pro boot fitters who are going to fit you with proper ski boots = not cheap), but before drawing any conclusions on my own, I researched, found your awesome channel, watched all your videos about buying skates, and I was convinced :)
