Paperclown, My current audio setup on my computer is a vintage stereo receiver I got off of my dads high-school friend two years ago for $50 and a pair of vintage walnut veneer Realistic Minimus 7's I got at a yard sale for $5. The stereo feels like it ways that of a small child. I have an 8" sub hooked up to it but it's kind of ghetto looking and sounds okay for now. I'd like to get a proper plate amp for it when I have the extra money. For anyone on a budget your best bet is to stick with high quality vintage gear that isn't as popular with audio enthusiasts. That way you're guaranteed to get a decent price on hardware. I also have some Zenith Allegro MC-4000 floor standing speakers that sound beautiful, but they need some tlc, one of them needs a new tweeter. The Zenith's are a hidden gem because of their woofers & Foster horn tweeters and you can get them for next to nothing because audio snobs despise them. You even mention a Zenith speaker to them and they'll tell you to junk them. I got mine for free from the same guy I got the stereo off of. :)

Paperclown, I've shopped from Parts-Express before, I love them. I just don't have the money to buy all of the things I want from their site. My stereo needs all the pots cleaned along with all the pots for the crossovers on my Allegro's, they crackle when you move the knobs and don't always work. PE has the cleaner I need for the job without having to result to Amazon. Amazon is a buck cheaper, but I'd rather get it from a place that specializes in audio supplies. The 8" sub I have hooked to my stereo I got from PE. It's a woofer really meant for car use, but the amp pushing it is a really old basic car amp that isn't the best. It has no features for fine tuning. The crossover just has a selector switch for low, high, and full. I'd either like to get a plate amp for it or leave it passive and get an external sub amp that goes on a shelf. I'd also like to get some polypropylene caps and possibly replace the junky one's in my Minimus 7's along with the caps for the Allegro's. They're fairly cheap and easy to do if you're one for soldering. I'm going to Florida in a few days so I can't buy anything until I see what's left of my budget when I come back. As for all of these fancy powered monitors and $2,000 + receivers. I don't care what features they have or "audiophile" tech is used. They'll never have the same feel as vintage. I just love the feel of the power button and speaker selectors every time I shut it off or change a setting. New will never reproduce the click of all the buttons. Brand wise my stereo was just as despised by audio buffs as my Zenith speakers. But they were actually made in Japan by a third party company for the brand name it's under. I actually have the middle until on the list and it was going for $500 brand new back in the 70's. :)

Great video! Nice advices. I own the Audioengine A2, but I am looking for an upgrade in pure loudness. These, although not reference sounding like I am used to, look like a safe bet. I am only worried about compatibility, as these speakers can only be connected to their own subwoofer, and vice-versa. Audioengine - and other brands - are more open, and that is a plus in case you upgrade later or one of the components fail.

Got the Kanto Yu 3 at Amazon for $219.99 but just the black matte was at this price. Had them for almost a week and I think they sound great! For the price I can't complain! Got a JBL SUB300 at the pawn shop for 86.00 with tax asking price was 100 ask them if they can lower the price. Very HAPPY with my purchase. Not an audiofile or whatever you spell it, just wanted something that sounded good but don't have pay an arm and leg for it!! 2 BIG thumbs all the way up!!! : ) Forgot to mention if your wondering about the wattage on the speakers. 30watts per channel and peak power at 120watts. Get's pretty loud in my small manufacture living room!

my sub sits in my desk so it's surrounded by MDF. it bounces more and it sounds heavier and deeper. (back of the desk is fully open and there's a good gap between the desk and the concrete wall for the sound to escape right where i sit.) All that bass are comes from below me, slightly angled at the left side. which is just near perfect to me.

I'd love good speakers but... My budget is Logitech sub $100 5.1 set... however, with a sound blaster Z, they sound pretty decent for the price after their break-in period, and great filtering for analog audio. But maybe someday I'll have a real set. I do a trick with my rear set though. I'm still using an old fashioned desk with a hutch, and I have the rears placed on top of the hutch, aiming at the wall behind me. So I still get the feeling of sound behind me, without physically having to get speaker stands and whatnot to move them behind me. My subwoofer is also on the hutch as bass tends to fall, but I might do the sub trick mentioned here.

I had an annoying high pitched noise in my speaker system, it wasn't loud but damn annoying after a while. After months of troubleshooting and playing around I found out it was the 3.5mm audio jack, no matter how many times I change it. Metal on metal contacts are not reliable and will drive you mad if you have amplifier-speaker setup.

How bout dat vintage audio with them receivers and unpowered monitors. Btw i would suggest a preamp for your turntable if you're going plug it into a pair of powered monitors. Preamps will improver the sound as the rca inputs on anything new wouldn't sound the best being that vinyl is old and hardly taken into consideration when building new speakers.

I bought the best wireless speakers but had a great idea to protect them from someone poking their finger into the tweeter, which I've been tempted to do. I keep the speakers in a chest of drawers. Now my problem. No matter how I tweak the EQ, the sound is always muffled. I'm going to try crawling around the floor and see if that helps

"Try singing high and low at the same time" Well... I can do overtune singing where I sing in 2 completely different frequencies at the same time.... Speakers can do this too(though in a completely different way. I use multiple chambers in my throat to resonate the sound in). It's not much else for it than just producing the highest frequency, but it blends in a different frequency by lowering and increasing the peaks of the high frequency at the interval of the lower one. The distance it needs to move for the lower frequencies however is the real problem. Subwoofers can move more air, which makes them better for lower frequencies(but the size makes them unusable for high frequencies because the cone bends)

I know, since my crossover is intentionally WAY off in order to make up for weaker bass response in my bookshelf speakers, that my low end should be muddy.
