I fly for free with my airline because I’ve been there for 34 years now. I can also fly on the other airlines with a 90% discount. The only catch is that it’s all space available standby. If you are willing to fly at odd hours, during midweek and during off peak season, you can do it no problem. My wife and I currently buy our tickets full fare because of time restraints. We do get a 20% discount with our airline for a confirmed seat. When we retire, we will then have the time to miss flights without it being a big deal. Until then, we will continue to purchase our tickets. This info will be of good use to us. Thanks Nora!

Hello! @@NoraDunn just had your videos randomly suggested to me, I'm not even travelling anytime soon 😂 Anyways, I just would like to see you review Kayak flights. Thanks for this Google review I've never really used Google to search flights, I find it a bit confusing. But I'm also a well-seasoned traveler, happy 13 years so far. Never used travel agencies cos they charge extra, no miles benefits and I don't like not having full access to my itineraries. Kayak had been my go-to site to check flights then book directly from the website, but usually they only show base fare so it could take some time comparing prices. After the pandemic, Agoda stepped up their game and I get more search match and cheaper flights there, with the luggage/extras option. The prices are the same, or lower too, so I've never tried booking directly from a third-party app but Agoda changed that. I still prefer it as just a guidance to check flights and then book directly from the airlines. 😅 just to make sure. Please kindly do comparisons of these two if you don't have a video of it yet? Thanks for the fun tips, and the engaging video. I learned a couple things, so I appreciate it! Regarding the tips for both VPN and other currencies... in my experience these have both produced mixed results, but once I go to actually purchase there are still more steps to consider. The currency that I'm using to pay sometimes determines what the airline uses to sell the ticket. For example; searching a US carrier for a different currency gives me, for example, a cost in euro. But when using a US credit card to pay, then the cost and fare revert to USD. The times this does not happen are when I use a local currency (in this example, if I used my euro credit card, the euro fare applies) and also most of the time booking 3rd country fares... i.e. purchasing on EU airline, fare is in euro, paying with US credit card... the fare stays in euro. All in all, even when finding a better fare in one currency or location, for the most part it's just not worth it. With one exception, which you noted - and that's when a 'locals only' fare is an option. Anyway, I know that's not the main point of the video. Just my experience.

Another feature that I wish these apps had is alerts about a given destination that might make you reconsider your plans in terms of dates or destinations, that might not occur to you, like a national holiday that shuts everything down when you're there, popular sights being closed for repairs or renovations, a major sporting event that will make hotel rooms expensive and transit crowded, or political unrest and the like. I always go to my local library for preliminary searches because if I search from my home computer, the next time I go to look the prices almost always are higher. This way I can document the flight into in the library and then go home to book it.

Really? I researched this in depth for a video last year and I concluded it was a myth that airlines track IP addresses and raise the prices with subsequent searches. @@NoraDunn I've found this is usually a time thing. I did find a wine store in Portugal that was doing this and I confirmed it with Incognito mode in my web browser. Google would give me one price for a bottle of wine, then the first time I browsed the site I'd get the same price. The second time the price would go up. I love wool clothes for everyday and travel. It’s unfortunate that Unbound Merino doesn’t offer extended sizes for women.
@NoraDunn4 ай бұрын
I’ve personally given this feedback to Unbound Merino, and they’re well aware of the need to offer larger sizes. The challenge according to them, is that they don’t just want to take the same pattern/dimensions of smaller sizes and make that larger, because that’s not how larger people are shaped. They want to make something that will be flattering and fit properly. And for that, I respect their approach. It just means it’s taking them longer to get the right designs in place and manufactured.

do you think using a travel agency is a safer way to secure flights to Europe? I found good flights but what if something goes wrong? You have no one to call. I await Your thoughts please.
@NoraDunn2 ай бұрын
Great question! This is the challenge. A travel agent might find you a good flight, but if something goes awry (eg: a cancelled flight), and you're at the airport trying to sort it out, the people at the airline desk might not be able to help and they'll say you need to contact the travel agent. If the time difference is such that it's off-hours for the travel agent and they can't be reached, then you could be a bit stranded. That said, if the travel agent is available (and customer service oriented), they might be able to advocate for you in a way that you wouldn't be able to on your own. So....it's a gamble.

Can you still buy other peoples airline miles and use them to book flights?
@EfficientRVer3 ай бұрын
Of course the answer varies by airline, and maybe even by the status level of the person whose miles you are using. It more often would be in the form of them booking you a ticket, than you buying miles that get added to your own miles account. The less the airline knows about what's going on transactionally, the better. I'd only do such a transaction with someone I trusted, not for instance someone on Craigslist, more likely someone at work.

Good stuff. I use google flights as a starting point. But I find prices for flights to Buenos Aires from Florida are frequently wrong, esp using a non US carrier. And domestic flights in Argentina almost always have the wrong price. ITA travel matrix seemed more accurate in the past although I have not used it lately as I usually go straight to the airlines website.

@@NoraDunn Yes the OTA's and google flights often use the "official" exchange rate which is worse than the MEP (credit card) rate. But the carriers use MEP and will display the correct price. These outlier situations also happen in other countries with multiple exchange rates like Cuba.

I guess they do. A lot of "trust fund" comments from people who don't understand remote work, business travel, or nomadic living. Maybe they have never left a 100 mile radius of where they were born, or maybe only have flown a few times to tourist vacation spots.

Yes, I always book directly with the airline. I don't like using OTCs like Expedia, because if something goes wrong at the airport, some airline desks won't/can't help you - you have to call Expedia. And if it's an awkward time of day/night, or you don't have calling credits or power on your phone, it can be problematic.

I've used Google flights. I don't find it to be very helpful at all. What I choose is kayak, kayak allows me to get the lowest priced round-trip multi city or one way. With Google flights there's no difference in the price. Living in the Baltimore area I only have one airport to choose from so the option of choosing for example Washington DC is a no go as Dulles airport is an hour and a half to two hours away due to DC traffic. I've also used kayak to save thousands on multi city flights overseas. For example, I am about to take a flight this January 2025 Baltimore to Auckland, Sydney to Fort Myers and I saved $4000 off of the airline price.
