Pro Tools HD offers extensive control over mix automation. In this video I look at two of the controls in the automation window, Capture and Punch. These controls make it possible to capture all automated settings from one section of a mix and to then write them to another part of the timeline. This feature is particularly useful in post production where mix settings may need to be replicated from one scene to another.

This and the field recorder workflow make me want to get HD. The time saved is worth it in my opinion.

Thanks mae, great video. quick question, when you captured automation from scene1a and punched it into 1b, why didn't it override the preexisting volume automation on that DX1 track?

Hey Paul. Hope you do not mind me asking one question please? I watched recently all 4 tutorials of your about automation on Pro Tools Expert site- premium videos. In Part 3 you nicely explained Write To Current / All Enabled. I am still bit confused in terms that its pretty much the same as using Preview Mode ( obviously as you explained in your video) Write To Current works on suspend automation and off. You also mentioned that you are using often this function when working with dialogue on the same track. I must say I do the same ( trying to keep track count to minimum) but I mostly use Preview mode. Am I missing something fundamental here with Write To Current - All Enabled please or it is pretty much same as Preview? Many thanks. Mariusz

Thx for the video Paul, really helpful. I've got a question, is there a way to capture and punch all the automation, just to one track, without affecting the other tracks? Thanks

Good question. If you select only the track you want and then hold down Option and Shift whilst doing capture, it will capture only the automation on that selected track which can then be punched in where needed.

You can also play on Read mode the tracks you want to copy automation from and then switch Automation off on current tracks. Then you can select the area to be written and press alt+cmd+/ (Write to all enabled) and will write all automations enabled on automation menu for all tracks selected.

Thank you both for the answers! I'm gonna try those techniques. I was using the following method: going to the menu edit, copy special, all automation. And then past special, repeat to fill selection.

this is - as usual - excellent. I would like to know how do you write (for instance) some EQ settings for a particular time selection? I want to make the sound of an ambience muffled for a scene in the interior, and then go back to flat after the selection. I saw it done before with the autom window, but I am stuck somewhere and don't get the desired result. If anyone would like to help me out I would be extremely grateful.

What key command did you use to get the single floating fader window while you were on the edit page?

+ABC1MCE2 In the channel's I/O section, click the little fader icon to the right of the output selector.

Is this also known as snap/lock automation? or is that different?

It isn't known as that in Pro Tools. It's just called Capture and Punch

I will do if I get time. In the meantime, have a look on www.pro-tools-expert.com. I did a comprehensive video series which covers all aspects of Pro Tools automation.
