We hope this is helpful! Choosing the right DAW was one of the SCARIEST decisions to make when we started out, because it wasn't just about the money, it was about all of the TIME that you spent learning something. Did you choose Logic or Pro Tools? Which do you prefer? Let us know!

as far as logic goes, for me it is unusuable until further notice. Logic Pro has a FATAL BUG THAT DESTROYS YOUR AUDIO FILES!!!! Anyone wondering can search „one or more audio files changed in length“ You can see countless forum posts, blog posts etc. about it. The issue exists since a few years… I swore to that DAW. Apple did a great job keeping it low and worse, providing no fix

A really big aspect that you missed was Music Vs Post Production. The post audio world (Movies , documentaries, foley studios, ADR studios, broadcasting, etc) are all driven primarily by pro tools. This is also globally, not just a USA thing. Dolby Atmos is also primarily designed to work best with pro tools (anyone wanting to get dolby certified now, has to con through AVID). Ive actually tried to work on a full movie on logic when I first started many many years ago and it was pretty much impossible lol, you need some insanely crazy features (Advanced automations, field recorded guide track, etc) that only Pro Tools offers

I find the editing functions in Logic super easy, especially 'flex', 'takes' and logical shortcuts (eg ⌘T for Trim). What I find difficult is integrating outboard. Today I tried Luna. I'd hate to record or edit using it, but with the console mode it's like mixing on a desk, each channel has the eq right above the fader. It sounds great. And I can punch in hardware with no latency on each track. Is ProTools more easy to integrate outboard? Getting a bit over manual recall going into the summing mixer.

Workflow is objectively better in pro tools. Recording and editing audio is superior in pro tools as well. Logic is great too, it’s more user friendly and has a lot of great features. But personally the work flow on logic is not as intuitive as I would like which can slow you down but it’s just a nit pick. But yes logic is more user friendly and prettier to look at, it is cheaper as well. 200 dollars for the full package it definitely caters to home studio users as well. Both are great daws you can’t go wrong with either one but for me Pro tools is a better experience to work in

So...many many years ago I had an original MBox and ProTools LE! I let that system slide because I spent the next couple of decades working in pro studios with my bands as an artist/guitarist where I was doing none of the engineering. I can't really remember much about how I used ProTools althrough watching engineers over the years I may have absorbed a little. Forward to 2024 and I now realise I need to record simple demos, and also "keeper" electric and guitar tracks at home. Should I stick with tools do ya think?

I orchestrate, but I use the native playback that comes with the notation software. I use Sibelius and for notation and Noteperformer4 for playback. I write for performance, that is, I change dynamics instead of volume. I don't like touching the midi volume on the playback, however I would like my music to sound more realistic. Hiring an orchestra it's a bit expensive. I do have a problem with making up passages that would be unrealistic for an orchestra to perform, just so that it sounds good on playback. I know there are different DAW libraries out there by philharmonic orchestra, but which program run those more realistic sound?

Does Pro Tools not also have a perpetual license? it's a lot more expensive but I thought they had one where like you didn't have to continuously pay
@TLMuse
@TLMuse 10 ай бұрын
Yes, Avid offers perpetual licenses at various tiers. For the mid-tier Studio version, it's about $600 with 1 yr of maintenance. While the license is perpetual, note that Pro Tools has more strict OS version compatibility restrictions than most software. If you don't pay to renew maintenance on your perpetual license ($200/yr for Studio), you'll only be able to run your copy of Pro Tools on OS versions supported during your last maintenance period. So you'll either have to avoid upgrading your OS, or keep a copy of your system version-locked to run your frozen version. Currently, you can re-activate maintenance at any time with no penalty (beyond the normal $200/yr fee). It's hard to see it making sense for a new user; I think Avid reinstated it for older users who had bought perpetual licenses before Avid moved more strongly to subscriptions. -Tom

Hmmm. The old PT Vs LPX conundrum. I actually use Logic as my first point of call but if I'm getting uninspired I delve into Studio One 6 Pro. I changed from PT to Logic back in 2017 as there was just so many things I had to do with PT whereas LPX had much less work to do exactly the same thing. I'm not sure how you came up with Logic not being as streamlined as PT for country, live music etc etc. I have to disagree. I'm recording bands in every genre you can think of and Logic piledrives through it whereas PT used to take ages. Template making in LP is a doddle. When PT went subscription that is where it ended. Avid used to be real mean with their free version; so restricting. At the end of the day they both do the same job, just differently. Subscription? Not for me. BTW S1 6 pro reminds me of the old PT in so many ways and it has the best mastering suite than all of them. Great Vid guys.

I can’t seem to find many concrete arguments for pro tools other than “it’s what people use” and “people said it’s the industry standard so I say it is as well” best arguments for it I see are if you don’t have a Mac which odds are if you are a creative you probably have a Mac, and the Advid hardware compatibility but tbh that’s ain’t much of an argument cuz hot take Advid products suck bad. Had an Advid hdx interface and that shit would break every other session plus dadman software is a headache incarnated. Shit looks like minesweeper from the 90’s. Got a lynx interface and it just works out of the box no need to play sudoku in order to get the parity right. Seems like logic can do everything pro tools can do but at a flat one time fee, cleaner intuitive UI, better consistent support. I just don’t understand why people cling to pro tools still other than “it’s what I learned so you have to learn it” I say how about Advid makes their product better.

At the end of the day, you just have to pick which platform works best for you. I made number one Grammy winning records on both platforms and it’s not the platform that is going to make the record. It’s ultimately the producer. This is from the experience of someone who was on logic for about 14 years and switched to ProTools in the last four years. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Seth
@KuwaywayLogic
@KuwaywayLogic Жыл бұрын
@@OfficialFCMusic yeah that’s fair, i am just trying to find concrete tangible reasons to use pro tools over logic, but most of the time people say to use it because “it’s the industry standard” not because there is something inherent that pro tools has over logic feature or utility wise. If you have more specific impactful things about pro tools that logic doesn’t have or doesn’t do as well I would appreciate to know just exactly what pro tools does better and why people pick it. But if people pick it just because Advid has marketed themselves as the standard then I think that is a problem.

I started to use Logic in 1997 on a PC and then continued to use it for midi when I got a Mac and Digi001 with Protools LE. I found recording and editing audio in Logic to be extremely cumbersome, unlike Protools, whose audio editing and tape machine style recoding was second to none. However, the midi side of Protools sucked and I used Logic for midi editing and arranging and Protools for tracking and audio editing and mixing. Logic offers amazing value for money and it's stock plug ins are excellent to the point that you can produce entire music productions without resorting to third party options. I've not been able to get into using Logic for audio editing, despite the fact that there have been some improvements. Protools smart editing tool is just too good IMHO! On the other hand, Logic's midi side leaves Protools in the dust IMHO. Now if only someone could make a DAW with the midi power of Logic and the audio power of Protools, I'd get it right away! Great video by the way!

My two cents: Let me start off by questioning whether faster is better. Yes, Logic will get you going quicker, but the way they do that is by starting you off with a bunch of stock processing and stock instrument selections for you, which makes your music quickly sound like everyone else's. I can hear Logic a mile away at this point. I mean, my god, listen to any Billy Eilish record and you can just hear it dripping that Logic sound all over the shop. Pro tools on the other hand will make you do things for yourself, and learn as you go. So true, it might not be quicker, but by learning it, you'll be crafting your own voice and your own style and learning how to engineer as you go. The other thing that I think people have to understand about pro tools as opposed to Logic, is that pro tools is basically set up like an old school mixing console. You have your channels, your inputs, your routing and effects, and your playback. The architecture of the program is ironically wayyyy more logical than the architecture of Logic. IF you know audio engineering, that is. Now, having said that, once you know engineering, Logic is great for super fast turnaround commercial work. If you have a day to do a 30 second spot and it needs to sound to all the creative execs like a full blown, fully produced thing by the end of the day, then Logic can really come in handy. Lastly, I do have to say one last thing about Logic. Their gain staging is infuriating. You have certain instruments that are peaking right out of the gate, they throw on all sorts of crap, pop processing on everything that makes it sound like half the tracks are already mastered, and again, wayyyy too loud and in the red. They give you 20 different ways to do the same thing, which makes the entire program inelegant and bulky and convoluted, and worst of all, they assume that you don't know how to do anything. They assume you can't play, can't engineer, nothing, so they just do it for you.. in the cheesiest, poppy, most commercial way possible, stripping you, the artist, of all that is unique about you. Ugh. Pro Tools, on the other hand, respects the artist enough to let them do their own work. Pro Tools assumes the artist has an intent and knows how to get it, so it doesn't try to do it for you. So on that note, I would recommend anyone starting out to start with Pro Tools and learn engineering and playing and tracking and mixing. Take your time, be methodical, don't rush to have your first thing sound like a Billy Eilish record. Hone your skill and your craft, and then, when you have a real understanding of how music and audio works, get Logic and see what it does for you, which might end up being a lot or not much, depending on the creative needs of whatever you're working on. PS: Nothing against Billy Eilish, she's super talented and knows her shit. I just wish I could hear a real band behind her with real players, as opposed to the same Logic sounds that I've heard for, what, 20 years now?

Good vid, guys. My two cents: I use Pro Tools daily. Been using Pro Tools for a long time and have a current Ultimate subscription. Pro Tools is straight up lame when it comes to stock music production instruments. Xpand2? Synth Cell? Groove Cell? These lame new MIDI plug-ins? Puh-Lease. Total joke. And don’t even get me started on their weak @ss support, planned obsolescence related to Mac OS compatibility along with their crap subscription model. Some die hards will keep trying to sell the up and comers that Pro Tools is the industry standard, but that only goes so far. Sure, if somebody’s goal is to go work in a facility that’s using Pro Tools, then go ahead and start sippin’ on the AVID syrup, but if you just want to write music, FL, Logic or Abelton are WAY better…

Until it's a money earner, I say keep purchases to a bare minimum. In fact Gband rocks and is free. . Again, no income, little outlay is the way to go. If you can make the purchase price of Logic off of anything you do, times 10, then investy in PT, maybe
