first of all thank you for these useful explanations .i have a question ,can you roll a losing iron condor position ?
@malihachapeКүн бұрын
Iron Condors are quite difficult to manage, rolling the entire trade may not worth it. I usually roll the untested side and make it a butterfly to minimize losses. For instance, XYZ is $100 and you setup iron condor 85/90 puts, and 110/115 calls. If XYZ runs to 120 and stays there, I would roll both puts up to 105/110 for some credit. Now you'd have puts 105/110 and calls 110/115. You are still losing but at least you minimized the loss. You can try broken wing butterfly, like roll puts to 100/115, but you are risking too much in case XYZ suddenly drops.

Last week same with MSTR...I rolled it and waited for the retrace back OTM and got out at a profit...meanwhile when you roll you collect bigger premiums too... don't get me wrong of course you have to closely manage it and sometimes you still may lose. But people who just buy and hold either stocks or options are missing out on this hugely important strategy. One more point, selling on Friday seems better too because the theta burn seems higher into Mon & Tuesday......Cheers

@ToadIToadi2 күн бұрын
To say 'rolling options to avoid losing money' is a misleading statement. When you roll, you essentially close out the current position (which will lose money) and open up a new position. On an uptrend market, it is not wise to sell covered calls as the price can run away till the cow come home. e.g. TSLA, NVDA, PLTR. Not wise to sell covered calls for these stocks IMHO.
@msdinba2 күн бұрын
Genuine questions. New to options. If one rolls, and give up some of the prior premium, is that what you mean by losing money? Could one also see the roll as avoiding needing to give up 100 shares and at least getting some premium?
@mrmaschinaadventures2 күн бұрын
No it's not a misleading statement because by rolling, you are collecting additional premium keeping the position alive....
@ToadIToadi2 күн бұрын
@@msdinba Yes if the price stop climbing or reverse course. For stocks that are continuously rising, like TSLA now, you lose money on the way up while selling covered calls.
@ToadIToadi2 күн бұрын
@@mrmaschinaadventures While it's true that you keep your position alive while the stock price continue climbing, but it'll cost loads of money when you roll it, which is essentially buying back the original call at a very high price, then sell another call that is further out, and maybe at a different price. Ultimately, if the price of the stocks continue to climb at your next expiry date, you continue to lose more on that call.
@mrmaschinaadventures2 күн бұрын
My friend, yes you are closing the call at a very high price but also selling the new call at a higher price at the same strike...it's a wash, in fact if it's a credit it's an addnl gain even at a higher strike...I've done it several times...you are clenching more credit which buys you more time....of course if it doesn't reverse then you lose ...Cheers
@chattingwithshap80102 күн бұрын
While rolling options can work, people need to understand that the initial premium you collected will be lost when you close out the option. Bottom line is you need to be okay selling a position if certain situations.

Have a few 250-265 Sold calls on TSLA with this recent blow up to 322 whats the best play for rolling them? Expiring 11/15, 11/22, and some 12/20
@Maddy-zs9md2 күн бұрын
Following!
@jimsherod87862 күн бұрын
You might consider letting the 12/20 expiration play out a bit. You can always roll it later. I'd roll the 11/15 and 11/22 now if you can. In the meantime, TSLA may self correct to the middle of the Bollinger bands by mid December since it is extremely overbought right now. I had options on TSLA that I sold when it was 240 for 270 (expired this last Friday, 11/8)... so I made about $20,000 and lost out on about $60,000 of potential gains. (ouch) But I'm considering selling cash secured puts at around $260 for about a month out since I think it will correct down... and if it doesn't I'll just pocket the premium. And, if I get assigned then I'll happily buy into TSLA again. Elon is going to be selling to divest himself if he gets a cabinet position which is going to make TSLA dip quite a bit in the short term. So watch for that if that happens. Long term, TSLA is golden. Such great potential. But short term is going to still be a volatile ride.

What I do in these rolls when I dont want to lose my shares is roll it to the next week at the same strike while simultaneously buying some new shares to cover it at the same time. Your breakeven on the rolled calls will be higher than the ones you just bought thus guaranteeing you will not lose on the trade. Even if the stock tanks after you bought those new shares, they will still be sold ( called away) at that higher rolled breakeven. Had to do this several times with Nvidia.
@lezcaz12232 күн бұрын
Do you profit with this Strat or just ensure you don’t lose shares? What the overall profit or loss?
@WCNperformance2 күн бұрын
This strategy would need more explanation because there are immediate questions. How many new shares are you buying to cover? If it's a large amount of shares relative to what's going to be called away, how much of your account is cash sitting around waiting for these situations? Or do you have a large cash amount that flows into your account on a weekly/monthly basis that you let sit for one of these situations and if the situation doesn't happen, then just invest normally? Is the return on this strategy truly better than if that cash was invested in the first place?
@buythedip12 күн бұрын
I love selling covered calls, but in a bull market if everything's going up and something explodes like Nvidia or recently pltr it becomes hard to roll out your covered call and raise the strike price high enough to keep up plus you're will get more money potentially if they get taken away but you're tying up your money sometimes for three four extra months and if the stock price drops then the shares will not get called away but you did have the right to sell them at the higher price cuz you had them tied up in too many covered calls and I have done that so I know sometimes that doesn't work

I don’t know what you mean by losing money with a runaway covered call if you mean, you could’ve had more gains If you never sold the call on your stock then I guess that’s true but are you saying you somehow lost money on a covered call cause I don’t think that’s possible. The price goes up. That is a risk profile of a covered call. You are capping your potential gains so there’s no way around that. You have to live with it and not be killing yourself. You could’ve made some more money that’s part of the game if you knew the stock was gonna shoot, you would’ve done a bull spread or something Else.
@lee159382 күн бұрын
My TSLA cc is ITM so I need to roll this up and out. I've checked and if I roll this to 2026, I get a much higher strike and a credit. So this looks like a good way to "defer" the loss (if it expires ITM) to a later date.
@peterjwilson2 күн бұрын
@ you can roll out 12 to 24 months for even or maybe small debit or even a credit. But then you turning the stock down into dead money. I am doing this some what for stocks I am certain will be going up. For example on Tsla my cc is at $230 for March and now the stock is over $300. I can roll out into early 2026 at $300 strike. I consider getting the $70 gain a good return. I will lose out if Tsla still runs and of course if Tsla declines then more options may become available. Good luck.

Sometimes with those trades it might just be time to close the whole thing and take the profit, or if you think the leap will keep running just bite it and close the short call with its big debit, its not fun when you cap your upside profits with certain strategies and then something blasts off, but its the game being played so you have to decide. Most likely its better to decide and take action before possibly getting assigned on the short call then having to decide under pressure.

Thanks for the input

If I want to get assigned anyway why wouldn't I sell a put a year in advance to get the most premium possible?

Possibly because selling puts every week or every month will bring in a ton more premium than just selling one a year out, go look at the premiums and do the math.

even tho you collect a credit do you actually still realized a loss???
@macman2312 күн бұрын
If your roll requires you to buy to close at a higher price than you originally sold the option for, then yes, you now have a realized loss on the books, even though you collected a credit for the roll.

@@macman231how does this make sense im new at this and when i rolled i realized 6k in losses. this is my scenario i had 24$ strike price on intel call, it went in the money i rolled to february with a credit of 2,000 and then it shows 6k loss on my realized gain section , why would i keep rollin if in going to loose money doin that can you explain?

Why would you keep using that platform if they won't even allow you to roll a short call out and up, that is crazy especially with the size of your account.....no way would I be on there.

👉 EXPLAIN ROLLING CREDIT SPREADS. It's basically the same thing but having a vid that I can send ppl to instead of me having to keep explaining it would help greatly.
