I agree, this would be a very interesting topic. In one video Simon notes that he retired from a desk job some time ago, prior to launching his KZbin and photo travel business interests. Would be interesting to see if he was metely a hobbyist during his desk job career, or started transitioning to professional photographer during that career, his sources of learning, etc.

That was hilarious. Before I nip into town and pick up an astro rig, i'll reciprocate all your favours with my top amateur tip: wear a pair of overalls. Lots of pockets; hard-wearing fabrics; two sizes too big gives you freedom from impingements as you struggle around on the ground; no concern regarding cost, especially if you get them free from your day job; and no-one will know that you're wearing just a mankini underneath. And finally - i'm enjoying learning a great deal through viewing your channel. I feel privileged, so thank you very much. Cheers from a cabin in a swamp in a rain-forest in New Zealand!

Always interesting to see what someone - who actually is a professional photographer - is using. I started with videography, got into people photography and now I am dabbling into wildlife photography. Wildlife photography can feel quite overwhelming and very expensive tbh, so for someone like me - who is doing this as a hobby - it helps to know what really works and what not. Therefore I am rather investing my money in wildlife workshops atm.

For now, though, I will continue on practising my technique and just trying my best to take photos of birds and other wildlife. This weekend I got myself a second-hand SIGMA 150-500mm telescopic lens, which is probably about 15 years old now but it's in great condition and seems to do the job for an amateur such as myself. I am interested on your filing system, specifically nomenclature and how you back up cards up i.e., by date, subject matter or by location? Do you use an offsite backup strategy as well? When do you decide to reformat your cards to reuse them? Do you recommend in a two card system like the Nikon Z7 II, that one use the second card slot as a duplicate of the primary card? The camo for the lens is mainly to protect it, which will be handy for resale. The 500 PF is a great lens. The camo for yourself isn’t needed for most species. Just wear drab colours of your environment…browns or greens.

You listed the Sirui Traveler 7C tripod, but I can't see you talking about it in the video. I've been borrowing but now its time to get my own tripod. And I found that Siriu at a bargain, but I'm guessing you take a chance in that $150 range so I might go for something I can test in a store. Any thoughts on cheaper tripods? My hardest thing is to try and catch the moon, but as I aim and tighten, the ones I've tried often sag a bit so I have to aim above and hope it results in a good composition. Oh, and if I do get a Nikon 200-500, will these beginner tripods cut it?

Great video once again. Question, how do you deal with lens in extreme cold and what kind of care I should apply? Talking around -15 to -30 Celcius (maybe less in the future if I happen to photograph northern lights for example). May have some risk of condensations, I've been shooting outside recently at those temperatures but had no issues but some comrades told me I could damage my equipment but I was not sure how much he' was knowledgeable about that stuff.
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын
Being in the cold isn‘t an issue..it’s coming back into a warm house that risks condensation. When you come inside, leave your lens in a camera bag or in the garage to acclimatize slowly for several hours before exposing it to room temperature air.

@@simon_dentremont thanks for the answer, I don't have garage but I usually let my camera/lens rest in my Lowepro backpack once I'm back home 👍

Hi Simon, speaking of gear. Suggestions on a place to get a warm camo jacket for harsher weather? Much appreciated.
@simon_dentremont2 жыл бұрын
I’ve bought them at anywhere from Cabellas, Canadian Tire and Marks Work Warehouse.

I think you forgot to mention the jacket(s?). I seem to remember a Helly Hansen one from the storm video.
@simon_dentremont2 жыл бұрын
Yes I dont spend tons of money on jackets. I do have that Helly Hansen for really wet weather. I like thermal undergarments in cold weather, either synthetic or Marino wool.

Great video. Just a small correction, the Canon 500mm v2 is 'only' 7 lbs.

As someone using a 7D mkii and a ef 100-400 mkii, would you ever recommend a 1.4x teleconverter?
@simon_dentremont2 жыл бұрын
Not really. I tried it, and your'e left with very few working focus points, a small field of view, and higher ISO. I do use that combo with my R5 and it works well (and did with my 5d IV), but not a crop sensor camera. Best left to full frames.

I'm considering moving into a mirrorless system this summer. I'm currently using EOS 5D MK III. Any lens issues to move up? I have way too much invested in my lenses to even consider replacing them.
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын
my experience is that adapted, EF lenses work great including autofocus. It’s a worthwhile upgrade…the new Canon mirrorless bodies are awesome. I have a video comparing the R5 and R6 if you’re debating which.

Hey Simon, I am using a 6D Mk2 for landscape and portraits and looking to get into nature more. I am thinking of coupling a 100-400 with a 7D MK2 to give extra reach. Is this a sensible combo?
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын
Yup. Version Ii of the Canon 100-400 is quite a bit better that version I.

@simon_dentremont yes the 2 is my plan. 7d mk2 comes tomorrow. Thanks. Keep up the great vids

Simon do you think Canon will license 3rd party lenses for RF mount? Your vids are ENORMOUSLY helpful!
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын
Not sure. Maybe they want to sell more RF first, and open up later.

Im planning on upgrading from an EOS 60d to a 7D MKII in late october, do you think the 7D MKII is still a good Action/Wild life camera? Hows the low light performance? i plan on doing Rodeo Photography with it with my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8
@simon_dentremont2 жыл бұрын
While it's still a good camera, the 90D, R7 and R10 are also worth considering for features like eye-autofocus and a more modern sensor better in low light. If the light will be really poor, a used 5D mark IV full-frame camera would serve you better, if filling the frame with it isn't an issue (as your subject is smaller in the frame on full-frame cameras)
@cavanhoward4792 жыл бұрын
@@simon_dentremont I dont want to go RF because I have a lot of EF and EF-S lenses, and I like the 7D MKII because of the superior auto focusing to the 90D. What's your opinion on adapting RF to EF? and does the 90d have the Eye focus? On my 60D is shoot at 700sec Iso 3200 f2.8 for rodeo photography and it's usually a stop and a half under exposed, how high can you take the iso on the 7D MKII until it becomes too noisy
