@billyoung953810 ай бұрын
In my opinion Nikon is interested in RED's sensors the most, because if they can move to a global shutter with close to industry leading DR that will be a major boon. R3d most certainly will get added to future higher end Nikon cameras. As for REd, I don't think Red will loose the RF mount, but instead have an Optional Z mount. This merger will likely also result in more attention being put into Cinema Glass options for the Z mount. One other aspect that might occur is if this increases the scale of RED production it might also drive down the prices a bit and we might see Nikon/Red cameras more in the range of where some of Sony's budget cinema cameras are currently situated. This whole thing is so mindbogglingly unexpected and yet could be truly awesome.

Stray thoughts: used a Raptor and Komodo recently and while they had good points about them (they're very powerful for their size), they felt... a little bit unfinished? Lots of complicated menus and slow start up times. They have a lot of functionality, but it feels slightly ramshackle. This could be improved upon by a company that cares about putting out finished products over moving quickly and releasing products in beta. In terms of Nikon, I was impressed with the feel of their new Z8 camera. It felt well made and packed in some great video features. The downside is the UI and ergonomics are not set up for video really. I don't think adding a RED UI to a Nikon camera would be useful either. They need to invest a lot in developing a good video OS for both brands. As for the RED brand, it wouldn't be a terrible thing if it was cleaned up a bit. The disruptor image hasn't been relevant since they essentially won the argument on large sensor digital cameras. I'm kind of glad for the people at RED to have made this deal to be honest though. I just think the era of selling expensive niche tech to a crowd (that originally wanted a replacement for film) is coming to and end. The mass produced devices are going to get so good that RED needs to make cheaper cameras to compete - and some kind of unholy REDikon is probably the way to do it.
@ziggybadans6 ай бұрын
I agree! I've always thought RED cameras were just a little bit unpolished and like they cut some corners. I use URSA Minis regularly and occasionally Geminis, and the Gemini body feels a lot worse than the URSA for build quality. That's not to mention the terrible mounting mechanisms they use for the display and handles, despite the fact those both cost thousands of dollars! It just feels a bit odd that an $8000 URSA Mini Pro can rival a $25000 RED Gemini in terms of build quality, colour science, sensor quality and features. Really the only thing REDs have going for them is RedcodeRAW, but BRAW is insanely good for most cases (R3D still beats it in the blacks tho) that even that lead is diminishing. I think Nikon has had great build quality and features with their cameras lately, so if they can make some changes to REDs that mirror that, they could definitely improve the brand a lot.

'Red make their own sensors'. No they don't. By all accounts RED doesn't even have an image sensor design team, whilst Nikon does. Sure, mostly they use Sony sourced sensors, but they've been careful to keep the in-house capability. RED commissions sensor designs from Forza Semiconductor - an image sensor design bureau, and they are fabricated by a commercial foundry service. If anything, the synergy might be the other way round, with the cinema camera market providing a commercial outlet for Nikon's image sensor operation.

@@carlyates2487 And so does Nikon. Though sourced from (and designed by - at least at some level) Sony Semi, the 45MP sensors in the Z8 and 9, are unique to Nikon, with the dual data architecture that Nikon specified. The real question is how much money is to be spent on sensor R&D. With RED cameras sometimes costing ten times the price of a Z9, that's mostly spent on small volume items like specialist sensors. Sensors like that can't straightforwardly be used in Nikon cameras - and it's very likely that the foundry that makes the silicon can't produce in the volumes required. On the other hand, Nikon has a very good sensor design group, which could well be employed on specialist sensors for future RED cameras, cutting out Forza.

I didn't think Nikon had the money. But the soon-to-be-developed Nikon mount for a RED! It a good deal. I owned Nikon but lack of video I left. At 65 I'm not buying anything but like my Sony. But Nikon is now a serious player!

The biggest immediate impact will be the loss of an important lean disruptive manufacturer. It is due to Red that we got 4k that early. Without them Canon would have software limited their cameras even more (witness is magic lantern). Red was to the camera industry what Tesla is to the car industry. If Toyota buys Tesla tomorrow we will have to wait for Chinese companies to push the boundaries. Luckily we still got dji. They did a good job with Hasselblad, so who knows.

I think if Sony needs to do such a move it should be blackmagic for DVR and BRAW in case Nikon wanna try sue them on compressed RAW, while using Sony sensors that kept them afloat for decades. Tricky to say the least.
@danfuerthgillis44837 ай бұрын
Maybe Nikon can finally shake up the industry and stop this idiotic patent lawsuits over codecs that were invalid anyways. Nikons Z9 and the lawsuit over the Raw compression was the nail on the coffin for Red. Red uses Forza sensors as red does not make their sensors they outsource them.
@xWood400010 ай бұрын
I really hope Nikon won't sue like RED did, but I assume that's why they acquired RED instead of just erasing the patent by winning

Sony Burano better deliver because the Z8 is pretty impressive.... I can only imagine what the first Nikon RED camera will be like.

The Z8 is a very different camera to the Burano, the two do not compete at all

all I want is the end of this raw patent so sony, bm's, canon and panasonic develop internal compressed raw recording in their cameras.

I think Nikon won’t fiddle that much with their dslr or mirrorless cameras. On the other hand, RED and its customers will benefit from this acquisition. Hopefully we will be seeing a new line of Nikkor cinema lenses, Z mount option with an efficient autofocus capability and a friendlier ear listening to their customers.
@carlyates248710 ай бұрын
I think those 3 outcomes are a pretty realistic expectation.

There is a big issue here, where that this reviewers captures well.. this is not a partnership, and there are no longer 2 companies. Red has been purchased, not merged into a partnership. Red will most likely disappear quickly. Nikon now controls the patents, and Raw Red...The box that Red Raw is placed in be immaterial. In addition, Nikon has existed superbly without any substantial placement in hollywood scene as a cinema brand, and can easily enter this market by initially using the Red name, then dismantling the brand over time. Corporations rarely maintain acquired competitors in anything near their original states, nor do they manage two different corporate cultures. Nikon will most likely overpower the Red camera brand with its own version of Nikon-branded cinema cameras, if it desires. Goodby Red!

This will be like when Facebook book bought out Instagram right now the owners have realized that they just can’t compete with others like DJI and Apple fast taking the market share and so the owners of red have decided well if we sell now we can go and buy super yacht and not have to worry it’s simple as Nikon will do it. Christ knows? don’t forget these people who thought investing in binoculars rather than chip technology when the digital camera came out was a good idea.

Nobody seems to be thinking clearly... What's the scoop on the upcoming releases in the world of cine cameras? We all know Canon have been waiting for too long not to come with a disruptive new line of cinecam !! Are there any promising options that Canon have been hiding from us… with impressive dynamic range sensors at a more affordable price point than what Red offers? It seems like Red might have had to join forces with Nikon to stay competitive in this industry. I know it sounds strong as a statement but how much cost red cameras? A new Canon C500 mark3 in its price range with better sensor than most Red cameras and that would have been very dangerous for Red. Now Nikon can compete with Canon, Sony and even Arri…

Best case scenario: Nikon stops using Sony sensors and uses reds tech then gets into the creator/cinema market(photography is on the decline). Red gets to streamline their production process and decreases price barrier to entry into the red “ecosystem”. Both companies employee base grows and there are happy families across the board. I was hating on this but looking at it this is good for everyone. I’m a canon shooter and I know this will cause them to take this more seriously. It also explains why they’re so invested into making cinema cameras after seeing the success of the R5c.

Google Translate can pronounce it in Japanese for you :) nobody European/American says it correctly, doesn’t fit well into our languages. Ni-ko-n. So it’s two clearly pronounced Japanese sounds rounded off with an n. Knee-cone is moderately close to the Japanese. But eh as long as people understand everything is cool :)

😡😠🤬Once Jim Jennard departed RED I had a feeling and it became true, that RED was slowly losing money, momentum and they were heading slowly to extinction so the new owner and CEO sold it before he lost even more money. I was one of the first RED ONE original camera owners and RED treated me like crap after I paid them their $40K all at once for the Red One with all accessories. I was one of the first 500 buyers that should have received the RED One but RED played favorites and shipped over 5,000 Red Ones before they shipped mine so I lost valuable time to rent it so I can recuperate the $40K I paid them. I'm still trying to get rid of it and will never trust this company or Panasonic ever again. Panasonic's problem is that they introduce a camera and 3 years later they stop any technical support on it, so AVOID Panasonic at all costs.
