So I recently found out about a sort of DIY, but not really, CO2 system which eliminates the need of refilling CO2 cylinders the conventional way.. I hate the conventional way.. so I bought it! And tried it! And LOVED it! Here's what I'm talking about!
F Zone CO2 system amzn.to/48DjDEf

Hey Danny, nice video as always. I noticed you added 600 grams of baking soda and citric acid, which is troublesome because in the long run, a small amount of crystalized citric acid will form at the bottom of the tank. This is remedable I will transcribe something I read on Reddit, which was very helpful with this: "300 g of citric acid is about 1.56 moles. 300 g of baking soda is about 3.57 moles. The chemical equation is: 3 NaHCO3 + H3C6H5O7 → Na3C6H5O7 + 3 CO2 + 3 H2O which means you are providing too much citric acid relative to the amount of baking soda. For 300 g of baking soda, you should only add about 228 g of citric acid; the other 72 g is wasted. Anyway, the reaction produces 307 g of sodium citrate and 64 g of water, for a total of 307 g of sodium citrate and 364 mL of water, which is about 0.84 g/mL. However, the max solubility of sodium citrate in water is only about 0.57 g/mL. This is made even worse by the extra 72 g of citric acid you added since it will compete with the sodium citrate to dissolve in water. So, increase the initial water to at least 474 mL of water--preferably a lot more--and reduce the citric acid by about 72 g. Not sure which kit you bought or what instructions you are following, but the Fzone kit says approximately 300/300/500 to 400/400/700 for the ratios of the 2 chemicals and water respectively, so I am not sure why you are putting so little water. Side note, this whole thing only produces 157 g, or about 5 oz, of CO2 which is pretty small. A typical paintball tank is 20 oz." So in simple terms, the ratio is : 1.31 so for every 1 gram of citric acid, use 1.3 g of baking soda. In your instance, you should use 600 citric acid and 780 baking soda. I hope you find this helpful.

Hi, thanks! the measuring above is for the 2 l bottle, I bought the 4 l bottle and the instructions on all of them are 600g each component to 900ml of water. Yes I know about the crystals on the bottom, it’s apparently sodium citrate, it's something I've seen everyone experiencing and rinsing the bottle with hot water apparently clears it pretty fast. I also found the discussion you are talking about and I can see some mixed feelings about it.. I don't know I don't mind those crystals on the bottom and rinsing the bottle but maybe for the funzies I'll try applying the ratio to my quantities and see if there is any difference :)) but about the quantities, all kits no matter the brand recommend 600 to 800 g of each component to 900 ml water 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi Danny To reduce the Co2 reaction when adding water.....put the water in the fridge for a few hours!!
@haitch04
@haitch04 5 ай бұрын
Great advice, chilled water gives little if any immediate reaction, you have more time to add water and screw the gauge on, might just have to wait a few hours longer for everything to get back to room temp before your pressure comes up.

@@haitch04 alternatively ice cubes to separate the two compounds apart! sadly that means all of your water has to be in the form of ice.

Hello fellow aquascaper! Great video about CO2 generators, never even thought about them or used them. I always thought that they would not generate pressure, for sustained use, but I was wrong. You should do a 3 month update on this, I'd be very interested.

Hi, yea that's generally the case with yeast and sugar.. and maybe gelatine lol so I've never been interested in these diy options. But this one seems to work well so far 2 weeks in :)

I also started with a 2L which I still have on my 60p I’ve gotten a full co2 set up for my 90p which was $$$ but I’m lucky that when I run out my LFS swaps out my co2 tank the same day for 30 bucks every 9 months

Been using a 2L Version on a 10 Gal since Nov, works well. Danny, you mentioned in your Dutch Scape Vid that you were going to do a Video on the Hang on Filter you used? There are people stating that they use a Oase 600 on a 60P! I don't understand the logic as the bacteria only build up to the load in the aquarium. Your Dutch scape is awesome! Thanks!

I have been using mine for almost 2 years now on a 7 gallon. It is the 2.5L size. It is another brand but I do believe they are all the same. The only thing that has failed is the crappy check valve. I bought an extra solenoid for mine just in case because I was worried about that failing also but everything else is working perfect. I get at least 3 months out of mine at 1 bps but my aquarium is small and I am using a smaller reactor for 200g of each citric acid and baking soda.

Danny I discovered your channel doing research for a discus tank, now I am having second thoughts since I am also into planted tanks and all literature says the combination is possible but very difficult. I’m curious what country are you from I can’t tell from the accent

Hi, I’m Romanian but live in Cyprus :) yea I was a bit delulu when I thought I could handle lightly planted tanks 😅 and by lightly I mean some huge echinodorus plants and that’s it. If you thrive on ‘gardening’ in your tank, the Discus journey will be challenging for sure.

I have been thinking of getting this as well. I have seen some yt videos that says you should get dual stage regulator ones for these as well or else you need to fiddle with the needle valve a lot. Can you verify that?
@Danny-MOG
@Danny-MOG 6 ай бұрын
Hi, well I guess everyone has a different experience, I fiddled for exactly 20 seconds or so for 3 bubbles per second :)) regulators are very expensive and this system is too, I would not buy a new regulator which might not work out cos it may not support using the filter. I think the regulators of the nano systems are more finicky than this one and those are still great 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@Danny-MOG i have seen yt videos where people with these diy co2 have seen changes in bubble rate as the pressure decreases from 400 psi and need to readjust. Unless the diy regulator had two stages. I was just curious about what your expirience would be . 🥰🥰

I have the ZRDR brand version of this. One with a single pressure gauge and one with two. I haven't found any difference in how fiddly they are. The single guage one slows down a little bit under around 50psi but that's usually around the time I'm thinking about refilling it so it's NBD.

Hi, carbon (dioxide) is an important nutrient for plants, in aquarium water it can be insuficient for some plants, so we offer it by using pressurised systems which work in essence by dissolving it in water :)
