I used to have a cat that could open anything - child locks, pet locks, you name it. I laughed really hard during this video as I recognized that behavior in Mickie and immediately saw where this was going! Good job, and good luck as something tells me you're going to be building a LOT of Mickie-proof items around the home.

Great project! I love your way of talking through your process. We had a cat who could unscrew the lid off the per food container we had...it was the size of a bucket and held a while bag of food. I kept thinking the kids were leaving it open. Until I watched her spin it open, pulling towards herself with both front paws with enough force it would go all the way around....she even knew to pick her paws up to let it spin freely.....😂

What a cute kitty! You know some people would just get rid of the cat. You can tell this guy really loves cats. It’s great to see love inspired innovation.

I have cleverly designed a cat door that has two sides: an only OUT side which I lock at night because I can only sleep when all 3 of my cats are inside 😳; and an only IN side that means no matter what they can get in but not out that door. It works with two of the cats but the calico named Elizabeth, as in Queen E, regularly lets herself out the only in which is impossible… except for her!! 😱 never underestimate the capacity of a cat!

I like taking paracord and pulling the sheet off for making flat retention chords. They bind a bit less than flat strap or webbing because they are round but easily collapse flat when needed.

I made something similar for a laundry bin a couple of years ago. However I made the hinge a bit different. The oversized "dowel" just needs to sit in an open hole (half hole), which has the advantages of making assembly and disassembly easier since the door can just be dropped in after the frame is installed in its final location. Removing the door is made easy for removing dust and lint from the cabinet. I didn't use any chains to limit how far the door swings open, but wooden blocks used as end stops on each of the side panels (inside). As the door swings open, the inner side panels (attached to the door) have a tab which stops against the blocks (not sure how clear this explanation is).

To replace the shoelaces look at Steel wire rope (SWR) most builders merchants will have some, you can get it a few mm thick, and it holds a lot of weight!, to stop it from rubbing or stuff like that you can also get some heat shrink plastic to cover it. It should cost no more than about £10. Good luck.

Great looking project that Keith. Laughing at your very intelligent cat 😂. We took in a stray cat 12 years ago but have never had any problems like that. A relative took in a neglected dog that was deprived of food and all through his long life he was obsessed with looking for food whenever he could. Not sure if your cat will ever forget but he's adorable 🥰

Bless you Keith, that is another labour of love for the benefit of Mickie ! There must be something in the name, I had to make a number of Anti-toddler devices years ago for my son Michael who was physically very strong and a determined escapologist so all commercial solutions failed ! Nice project in the end, with any amount of planning there is often something one overlooks and you overcame all the issues to result in a stylish and practical solution !

One of my cats would have that open in a jiffy. She would hang off of the handle and throw herself back. Using the handle as a pivot point. she does something like that to our backdoor and lets herself in or out depending on where she wants to go. She also does a double bounce on two walls to get access to our bedroom balcony, then slides the fly screen open and finally slides the bedroom window open. Of course she never closes anything !

The first few minutes had me cracking up. One of our cats is food obsessed too, and she can't stand any closed drawers, cabinets, bins, etc. We had to install child locks almost everywhere, lol. Mickie seems pretty determined, has he tried to jump up and hang on the handle yet? I have a feeling you'll be replacing that with an inset handle eventually😹

Mickey, being able to get into anything, seems to have all the qualities of a ... cat burglar! Nice project, Keith, might be making something similar. Not that our pets get into the bins but we have to be more diligent in what trash goes where, so two separate bins would be an option.

A couple of velcro cable ties would work well in place of those shoe laces, the ends wont fray and you can cut them round at the ends to match you fixing washers. Another great video btw.

Well done trash bin, truly wonderful cat. The next time you're improving the bin, consider painting the bottom edge of the MDF panels. Moisture can sneak into to places where it'll cause trouble almost as well as cats can. ;)
