In this video I make officially my worst ever project! A mid century modern style corner cabinet to hold some hifi equipment for our dining room. I believe the wood is Iroko, which is also known as "poor man's Teak"! The handles and hinges are solid brass. The legs are a mystery hardwood (probably meranti).

Great repair and creative solutions to problems Keith. As a man who has made many many mistakes i can tell you you will have probably learnt more on this project than any other. For example I guarantee you won't ever forget to set domino depth again.( not trying to rub salt in the wound) Its not about the mistakes, its how you deal with them !

You're exactly right, Karl. The first mentor/teacher that I ever had was a man at my church who went out of his way to show me things. He had grown up building houses in rural Oklahoma in the 1920's using a framing square, a hammer, a hand saw, a chalk line and a plumb bob. He told me that the measure of a good carpenter is how well you can correct and recover from your mistakes. Thanks for sharing with us. The cabinet looks great. I'd be proud to have it in my home.

That old hardwood came up lovely. Cannot believe you painted inside the unit & didn't bother painting the backs of the doors. Personally would have done a full back on it also, you're going to scuff the wall with logs & also have bits of wood fall out the back. But it looks good & suits the room very nicely.

It happens mate :( I have ‘phases’ like that periodically, F everything up, and the more you stress the more it happens. Only yesterday I was putting together my Ron paulk style bench, I was gonna dominos and glue it all with no metal fixings, every domino error you can think ( even domino and edge instead of face one corner 😂) of ensued for 5 minutes, I laughed loudly! Put the domino away, pinned it all with the air nailer… and 15 minutes later it was done! Only 12 mm ply…. Never had one nail out the side 👍🏻😂 It keeps us humble mate! It’s good! The ‘old craftsman’ would have been over a week at that, don’t sweat it, jobs for ourselves often go pear shaped for some reason, usually when money is involved we get smart fast👍🏻 Everyone will appreciate( and ‘thank F it’s not just me!’ ) at your video

I feel your pain with the wrong plunger depth...wrecked a solid walnut coffee table miter joint by blowing through with the domino. They could hear me f'ing & blinding 3 doors down. Fixed by re-cutting & reducing the overall dimensions by 20mm or so. Ever since I always set the plunge depth to the minimum 12mm before I put the machine back in it's box; if I forget to set plunge the next time I use it, at least I won't shag up the piece I'm working on 😀

Everyone loves a mistake video but jeez Keith you're way too hard on yourself 🙄 mistakes are way more valuable than you realise. I'm a teacher and have realised that the most learning comes out of mistakes. I do know what you mean by being drained and put off work by a project like this though. It mentally drains you an demotivates you... Remember the finished result and the learning within

One of those days. We all have them occasionally. Ideally, you're working with a buddy and you notice if one of you is on such a day before something really bad or expensive happens. Take a break, talk, start again. If no improvement, take the day off - too dangerous to persist. The job is less important than fingers, eyes, whatever.

Mate it looks awesome, we all have off days. This really inspires me to finish my corner cupboard/fuze box cover. I just want to point one thing out because I’ve seen you do it a few times, when you’ve finished with the tool rest on your lathe please remove it before sanding or applying finish to your projects, if your hand gets dragged between the rest and your work piece it could be quite messy!

Great video - nice to see you mess up. I don't mean that in a bad way, but so many KZbins seem to only show perfect projects and not many admit when they mess up. I am sure you may already know about these but I got a Seneca Domiplate - 12mm and 18mm after a recommendation from Peter Milard. Very handy if you use the Domino with a lot of 18 or 12mm material. As it is one solid bit of aluminum it can't slip or come undone and will always put the mortises in the same place relative to the reference surface.

The boards look like they have a teak veneer. Iroko was always known as "Poor man's teak" as it looks similar but the giveaway that the boards have a teak veneer is the dark brown, black streaks in the grain which you don't get in Iroko.. You are too hard on yourself Keith... That has ended up as a nice looking functional piece of furniture that you will be proud to look at and use for years. Rectifying mistakes are sometime the best part of projects. (My missus seems to find all mine though).

great job, just annoys me when you constantly use that domino without clamping the workpiece down, I mean you literally made an mft table for that purpose... and its right there.

There are two kinds of people. Those who have screwed up on a woodworking project and those who have never made a woodworking project. Kudos for sticking with it, getting around the little bugaboos, and making a great looking cabinet.

This is very encouraging for those of us who make more frequent mistakes. At the end of the day, you have a very handsome piece of furniture, despite not being perfect all the way. Thanks.
