I'm Canadian and I do luften. Fresh air absolutely makes a difference, specially when heating is on. I feel myself feeling lightheaded from lower levels of oxygen, if I don't open the patio door at least once in the day.

The lack of fresh air will cause medical issues that cost way more than what opening it for 10 min costs. Lack of fresh air also means moisture accumulation and mold. Which again mold and health issues associated with mold cost a lot more.

@@Brendawallingbear I've moved internationally more times than I want to count, and often I've put up stuff "for sale, whatever you want to give me" when I was moving again. I've also bought secondhand things from neighbors or coworkers, mostly beds; I'm small enough to use "teen beds" and if I'm going to use it for just a few months I don't care what color it is. I'm amazed by how many people were superhappy to pay me for a small appliance as much as I'd paid (a few times, even more although I'd told them it had actually been cheaper, they insisted) simply because mine was already there and I could explain how it worked. Apparently the people in appliance stores and supermarkets are very scary and I'm not, so asking me "how do you use this toaster?" is ok. Thrift store, garage sale, ad in the local supermarket's corkboard... the details vary by location, but wherever it is, "circular economy" is always a good thing for both parties.

I grew up in Denver, and all through my growing-up years, we ventilated the house at night to keep things cool the next day in summer. But ventilating during the day, or ventilating at all in winter, seems crazy to me. Of course, now I live in Dallas, and while we can ventilate in spring and fall, the time window is so short that we've forgotten all about it. In summer here, we keep the house tightly buttoned up and run the AC hard, because the days are infernal and the nights are uncomfortably warm.

Idk about your country but we would never get mold in winter in northeast US. The air is so dry inside that we actually run a humidifier in winter. I couldn't imagine opening a window and wasting all that heat.

As a German I totally relate with keeping stuff. I've got an emergency coffee machine and iron in the basement. You never know when stuff comes in handy. I have discussions with my husband about it because he wants to get rid of everything. German boyfriend is right, dirty things on the floor or in a basket, wearable things on the chair and clean clothes in the wardrobe.

American here. I agree with the clean/dirty clothes situation, especially in a hotel. Dirty clothes on the floor in the corner unless they are also wet, then it's on the shower curtain to dry before hitting the floor. Worn but still wearable on the chair, and clean still in the suitcase or unpacked in drawers or hanging. I understand Uyen's comment about putting in a bag, but I do that when packing to leave.. seems gross to have dirty clothes in a non-breathable bag for a long time.

This is so fun you two have such a cute dynamic, I'm slavic (mix of a few countries ukraine/belarus) and my boyfriend is Vietnamese and we live in Canada! We come across a lot of cultural differences, but they make me love him more as I get to understand more facets of his culture. He's a huge anime fan so this is too real, we always watch with the original subtitles, but part of me thinks slavic dubs like spice and wolf opening can be better than the original (just listen to that Russian spice and wolf opening! Its got a really unique vibe!), my guy also gets really attatched to all the little objects we've horded and it can be hard to part ways with all the recipes for date spots or little souvenirs like dried pressed leaves or rocks from the beach.

We "finally" go a 20 gallon fish tank and my husband put the rocks, pressed flowers and little memory things in it...(NO WATER of course) now he can enjoy to look at his "memory items" and i have the memories "❤contained" so i do not have to clean around aaallllll of them alll the time... I stopped watching the dubbed versions when I was around 18 and I never went back to them. Once you learn to watch the original you appreciate it so much more! And regularly I watch swedish, finnsish, french, spanish, japanese, korean, italian, middle eastern and many more movies and TV Shows and I would never wanna miss out on all that beautiful culture! That sounds like hell to me. I always ignore calls and video calls amd even have turned those possibilities off in messangers. So no one calls me. Ppl can text me. I read and answer when I have the time and feel like it and am not in the middle of something else like tasks or chores or just wanting to relax. If it is extremely important, send a old school SMS. Calls are just for emergencies that don't require an ambulance.

I'm german and I sometimes just call my parents but they rarely pick up because they both work full time and we all have pretty chaotic schedules. Same with my siblings. I have 4 siblings with their own families and jobs and day to day schedules. So I usually text my parents "are you free tonight for a video call?" or I text it in the family group chat so my siblings know that there will be a video call at 6 or 7pm that they can join if they want. It's totally normal for me. But the way Uyen was laughing about it made me realize that that is indeed pretty weird :D

it this case it would rather depend on your prioritys in this case. You cant choose your preferences and for the majority of people its charisma, looks and status. Dont get too hooked up on the romantic concept of love, its a biological mechanism to reproduce and evaluate the most valuabe matepartner for that, without having your own reasoning judgement. To your question, of course i agree with you that its possible, there are even preferences for other nationalitys. I am just pointing out what to expect for the most likely scenario. The world view of people from 1st world countries and 3 rd world countries is immense and i simply don t recommend that you think they have the same field of view, preferences, cultural values, etc. If a person would come to your country for the money, chances that they are not interested in your culture and are less cooperative when it comes to cultursal differences, which reflects already in simple daily behavior, are very possible. I think its a good thing when international relationships work out, but i also heard that the divorcerate for such as is also very high.@@KisaKZbin

But when I talk about relationship I mean responsibility of both grown up experienced educated adults being ready to try to work things out and not just cut the bridges after the first argument. Thank you for letting us know the difficulties of having a mixed-culture relationship/household and the ways you were able to tolerate or solve it. My bf and I are both Filipinos but grew up in slightly different socioeconomic class + launguage background. He was primarily Tagalog, and I am Bisaya. We have our personality differences, household-management differences, and language differences. It gave me such a relief to know that this is actually normal. I learn that compromise is easier if you both choose the relationship over your own pride/ego. Of course, it's not always the case, incompatibility can be an understandable driving force for breakup, but thank you for letting me know that we can both work towards an environment where we're able to solve our differences or plainly tolerate our differences. I find that having your own personal space (your own room / mancave and your own or A big bathroom) is a good starting point.

I actually love that German BF's family schedules the call- it's very respectful of the other person's time. I'm in the US, and I often schedule calls with my family and friends as well because we are all busy. When I lived in very different time zones with my family, I had to create a boundary around the calls because they would call me at terrible times, but if I did that, they would be soooo angry which is ridiculous and hilarious.

As a dutchie I have to say: the German need for dubbing media is so insane to us, here it's only kids' stuff that receives voice-over. Dutch people and Germans are culturally very similar but that is one of those big differentiators!

As an American who speaks German and has watched a fair amount of German dubbing, I’ve never been that impressed by German dubbing. Part of that is definitely because for Hollywood movies the original voices are way more iconic and familiar to me, but I’m like Uyen: I almost always try to listen to the original voice acting in general. Animated dubbing I can understand, because the visuals and voice performance were already separate, but live action dubbing has always felt really weird to me

So it‘s been possible for a while. As a fellow European from a dub-only country married to a South Asian (quite specific match!), I want to tell to the German Boyfriend that honestly they are just right about subtitles. There is a learning curve, but long term it is just better. You can see this empirically: there are plenty of people switching from watching dubbed Anime to subtitles, and stick to it, but there is literally no one from a subbing country that gets convinced to watch anime in English at some point in their life. It is just a small initial effort. Plus, you can eat crunchy snacks while watching without being worried of losing some parts of the dialogue: nowadays I started putting subs even in shows in English or my own language. Plus2, although you will not learn the language you can grab few words and parts of the culture by hearing the original speakers. If you will have kids, both reading and being exposed to many languages and sounds is super useful for the brain: you will never be able to reproduce some of the sounds in your wife language because you have never been exposed to it while growing. Plus3, there are a lot of parts that are impossible or very hard to translate while also keeping the proper timing and mouth coordination: iconic dialogues have been destroyed by dubs. We just do not notice because they are not iconic in our dubbed versions. I think you can realize the same by considering English movies that you watched in English as an adult and you watched dubbed in German before - although German adapters and dubbers are good (like those in my country), they are still operating with the additional artificial constrain of adapting the dialogue to a specific timing due to another language. It is like fighting with one tied hand.

You might be right, but I am on the boyfriends side. I have lived in a subtitle-country and therefore had some experience with „reading movies“, but it is exhausting (now that my eyesight got worse even more). German movies are dubbed really good. I‘d rather miss an iconic line instead of having to read a movie.

As I wrote, I acknowledge that there is an entry barrier. My mum keeps watching dubbed series, and she never got into subs. I understand it: at her age, it is likely not worth to invest the time and effort to switch, it is not that important. I thought the same for the first few months watching sub series, but it is a fact that _today_ I would never go back - once you get used to subs, dubbing just sounds ridiculous. While shifting from one system to the other is difficult, there are people switching from dub to sub, but no one switches from sub to dub. The barrier is as high, but the valley is greener on the other side: once you pass the barrier, you would never go back. @@nebelland8355

I fully agree that nuance is lost when dubbing, as you say in piknt three. But, I actually have to disagree with your first point. I was firmly in the subbed category until I was introduced to shows that had decent dubs. Dubbing when I was growing up was usually very low quality, losing the individuality of the voice and the actual emotion of the acting. But, having been introduced to decent dubs that conserve personality and emotion by having good translators and VAs, I can be convinced to watch a dub now, if it lives up to my standards. I still put subtitles on everything because I'm hearing impaired, so snacks are never an issue 😅

At the german boyfriend (german here as well). Reading subtitles is a skill you can still learn over time. It might be frustrating in the beginning but once you get a) more fluent with reading and b) better at "glancing" the text information it gets easier. Just stick with it and maybe at the beginning pause the movie to make it easier. (Yeah there is suffereing involved, but it's worth it). :)

I actually feel you both. My wife is Chinese and sometimes when I am watching this channel, I just feel..connected. My wife is actually the one who is crazy about Lüften. And we are not talking about just a few minutes like German bf, but keeping the window open for at least one hour. Punctuality: The eternal story. We are also dependent on public transport and we are both too stingy for a taxi. I try to lie to her about departure times of trains (like telling her the train leaves 10 minutes earlier). When we did not have children, I just left when I said it was departure time and I told her in advance. You could have seen her running. Maybe German bf should do the same, just leave without Uyen. Timezones: Yes and yes. Actually, my wife is in China right now and she always manages to call me at work. :) I am a teacher with older students, so I sometimes just let a student answer the videocall. It is always funny and my 4 year old son loves it.

'der Stuhl' is 100% a German thing! 😂 On holiday, I'd seperate my clothes though: clean ones either in the suitcase or cupboard (depends on duration of the stay), dirty ones in a bag and the not too dirty 'chair' clothes in another bag or hanging in front of the open window during lüften! 😂

My daughters went/still go to an international school in Germany. It's fun to have their international classmates here at our home and serve them traditional German meals. But it's as well fun to meet with their parents and have f.e. an authentic ghanaan dinner. Eating together, drinking and talking is the best way to get to know other cultures.

It is exactly what you said, you can appreciate teh performance so much more if you can hear the actor in the orignal language. My kids also started watching subtitled movies with no issues as soon as they could read.

While being ADD is a factor for me, I've been watching anime movies with my kids since the 90s and we only used subtitles. My kids use subtitles on everything as well and both are ADD. We all feel like we can't hear properly when subtitles are off. So it might be some of both.

My mother loved to move houses and flats so I love throwing things out and think it's freeing. My german bf however never moved before we moved in together and he has such huge problems letting things go! So understand you Uyen, it's exhausting when people simply can't let go. : D I live in an old building that basically airs itself, always, nonstop because nothing is completely isolated. I do keep the windows open in summer though because it's too hot otherwise. Airing in winter is nearly nonsensical because there are drafts everywhere and the climate in the flat has more than enough "fresh air". : )

I have a few things to say as a Vietnamese woman growing up with immigrant parents who don't really speak English and then being with a white American man. We have been together 15 years but we still have small issues. For example, he eats a lot of bread and potatoes. I can't handle that! My body can't handle a lot of bread, dairy, potatoes, etc. I just didn't grow up eating bread everyday so it makes me bloated and feel horrible if I eat too much. I can eat rice everyday and he can't. I think its weird if I don't have some sort of meat, fish, or protein for dinner but he thinks its fine. I always want fresh veggies with my meals (not steamed or cooked, fresh Asian herbs only) and he can't eat like that. He also doesn't like fish sauce which is in a TON of Vietnamese dishes. Even though I was born in USA, because I grew up with a different environment and food, it still makes things a little tough. I can give some ideas on why she is like that on the phone calls to Vietnam too. A lot of phone service sometimes in Vietnam is bad. They can't hear you sometimes unless you yell especially if they live or work on a busy street where there are lots of motorcycles going by. There are also lots of older relatives in Vietnam who can't hear well so you yell for them. Not to mention, Vietnamese is a tonal language so the tone is very important to put through. They also have a different time zone so it can be tough to catch the calls. I find it REALLY weird that people have to schedule calls with their family. I love these because it reminds me of my own hills and battles with my lovely man.

The family calls bit reminded me of the period when I was in college. My sister and I who were living far from home would both become distressed if we couldn't reach our parents whenever, so that meant we had to be available almost as often. We would pick up as long as we were not in class. Our grandparents, however, would answer from anywhere. I've actually seen them answer calls and calmly find out what is going on with the caller before saying that they are in church and will call back later. 😅🤣

He is absolutely right with ventilating the flat in the winter. Like he said, the problem in nothern countries is the big temperature difference between inside and outside. When you don't replace the air a few times a day, the humidity in the air condensates at the cooler outer walls and this leads to mold. In warm countries it's different because mold don't like warm temperatures but the temperatures of the outer walls in northern countries in the winter, spring and fall are a paradise for mold.

Mold loves warmer temperatures. Try living in Florida! Mold is a constant issue. It grows everywhere and loves humid warm bathrooms. I looked it up and mold grows best between 77 degrees F and 88 degrees F. Humid and warm is mold favorite environment.

I don't know to which countries you're referring to, but I'd say that in Europe that's mostly issue in Central and Southern parts, not in Northern Europe i.e. Nordics. We have issues with too dry air during the winter time.

Weak people, not German enough. It is also a genetic difference. Women are worse at termoregulation than men. Generally there are exceptions and it isn't the only factor. Then there is the fact that men (all men) are culturally conditioned to handle adversity better. Both physical and mental.

I think it's more about how you were raised. I (woman) come from a very rural area with nice fresh air, so I'm the one who always opens all the windows, cause I'm used to it. But most of my friends grew up in citys with bad air close to very loud streets which is why they aren't used to it at all. (And why they hate me for open the windows all the time😅)
