Great advise. Also, keep in mind, the dealership is about making money for the owners, nothing else. That means selling extended service agreements, accessories, cars that need to move, financing, Tru-Coat, buying trades, etc... You need to be able to keep all of the numbers straight in your head while negotiating. Sounds simple, but... It sounds cool to be around cars all of the time, but from a business perspective, they could be refrigerators, just something to move with a margin.

I totally agree with that. Find a family owned store with long term managers and sales staff IF you can! Avoid the Liner-Closer stores as most are! Some treat their sales staff like garbage and will hire almost anyone who applies.

I'm 24 been a car salesman since about 19 I was in retail sales and was tired of it Went to a small used car dealership I learned how to communicate with customers and make phone call get appointments discus the numbers and all the details This used car dealership didnt pay me as much as I wanted but I got the skills I needed Now I can move anywhere in the country more or less and drive to any highway find a row of 7 dealerships and have a job by tomorrow That being said car sales has slowed down allot in recent years but the business skills will never be replaced

As someone who was in car sales for many years when I was younger, he's pretty well spot on. The most important aspect of it is certainly building rapport with customers and reading people. Once you have a connection with someone, that's when you are finally able to "probe" them to figure out what they are REALLY looking for, what their objectives REALLY are, as well as be able to present numbers to them without them walking out, and rather sticking around to negotiate and overcome objections. It's a tough business and you learn fast, but it is fun and rewarding once you are able to get good at it. Keep in mind most salesman also work 60-70 hours a week including weekends, and if you want to be successful you'll certainly be coming in on your day off occasionally. If you just love cars, there are better jobs out there. But if you really love cars and people you can be super successful, and put yourself in a position to be at the top, and maybe with proper networking end up being the guy selling Lamborghinis one day.

Ahh, i just posted some advice directed at you in the general comment section. Basicly explaining why this is the worst carreer choice you can make at this point because of what the future of this industry most likely will be. At least see if you can find it, i think it is worth concidering at least. Then do with it what you want offcourse. But it will give you a different perspective on things.

I love fooling the hell out of salesmen. Playing dumb, acting like I have no clue what I am doing but I have been jewing them down to the razor since I was a teenager. Not a single one ended the deal happy. Really warms my heart to give it back to people who spend their lives getting better at conning others. My aunt paid me 400 dollars to be there for her last car purchase. I often spend weeks buying a car. Salesmen will believe anything if you are a sure-fire sucker in their eyes. People are just not equipped to deal with this. You buy a car twice a decade probably. They sell them 5-50x PER WEEK. Helping others like this is just one of the little things in life that make it worth living.

I worked in dealerships for 15 years and the only thing to get into sales all you need is to be manipulative or slick with people. THATS IT! I was a parts manager and it was STRIKING that I was more knowledgeable about cars than the sales and service managers service writers and salespeople. Its not a stereotype that salesman are slezy liars.(it's truth) some are very genuine and decent people very few and far between.

The number 1 thing when sizing up a job of any kind is the CULTURE. Most people only look at the money. But it is the culture that will make or break a job and your happiness. I know people who left decent paying jobs for less money, but are overall happier because of the environment.

Having starting my working career in the automotive industry, Casey is very correct. I'm trying to simplify this but probably won't :) Go with your gut because culture is so important. If you are fortunate enough to make decent money, you'll be putting a lot of hours in and sacrificing a lot. Having said that, there are other career paths in the automotive industry you can pursue. I would suggest something like car detailing or dent removal. A niche that is simultaneously a trade that can double as a business you can start. Remember, social media is your friend. Also, stay in touch with people you meet in the car industry and never burn your bridges.

Where are you? That rhetorical question is actually a statement where the dealers in Central Virginia will hire anyone and let them fly or fail on the profit margin they can generate over on the customer. As you know, but the public does not know, is that the commission is based on the profit margin. You can sell a million dollar car and not make any money. The profit to the dealer is what your commission is based on.

You are spot on it’s all about culture and how the place is run. I’m a second generation car salesman my dad was in the business for 30 years and retired as a GM. He beg me not to go in to it but I did after he retired and in a different city. I bounced around a couple of dealerships until I found a home. I have been there for about 3 months still trying to figure everything out there and there process of how things were ran. Then one day I was walking across the lot and my general manager stopped me he said I want you to know that you have found a home that meant more to me than anything. They found that something in me that Gave me purpose to be in the business. Now I sell all the commercial accounts that we have at the dealership some small some big I don’t my biggest mart was asshole 36 cars to one client best month ever had. So if you can carry yourself well and speak to people and find the right place to work it’s a good business to begin.

I got a job at a large Ford Dealership as a salesman. It sucked. I had to buy suits, work nights and weekends, and ultimately sold one car over 2 months, and made $100. My suits had cost a lot more than that. Customers didn’t care what you knew and didnt trust anything you said. They would lowball you and then have you compete against nearby dealerships on price. Management would hand you a list of everyone in the area that owned a Ford that was 5 years old or greater. They would tell you to call everyone and let them know the dealership was looking for good used cars, and that we were making deals now. Blah blah blah. None of it was true. Everyone was unhappy there. The top sales guy was a true salesman - the kind of guy you felt like taking a shower after talking to him for a few minutes. He could talk people into anything. Not a genuine bone in his body. Very sad.

I would also add that the culture in a dealership can change, often for the worse. I was a service tech many years ago and our union went on strike. We had to picket outside of a dealer that was not our own. The owner came out and talked with us, (the unwashed and drunk mechanics), and was very nice. 16 years later I remembered that and applied for a job at that dealership. The owner had now became bitter towards his employees and my year working there was pure hell. After 25 years of the auto industry I recommend another career path.

When I met my boss at this one place I worked, right after he walked away, I told my friend this dude is a used car salesman. There's no secret to being a car salesman except for one thing: You have to be a great bullshitter, plain and simple. If you see a person looking at a low dollar car, make them feel that they deserve better and move them up towards the more expensive ride. It's not rocket science. I can con a person into believing I feel for them and then screw them into the ground. I've done it to idiots who I felt deserved it but I don't do it anymore. Pretty girls do it to losers all the time. Hence the strip club. LOL! Same principal. No great secret.

good advice and comments the only negative thing i can say about dealing with some dealerships that are highly active in aCar Club can be “ Stuck” o only that subject as they eat ,sleep, and live for only that vehicle or subject i lived for over 20 years within walking distance to the number 1 Chevy Dealerhip for Corvette sales inthe United States and on 3 occasions i walked into that dealership to purchase a very Specific Vehicle and all those people wanted to do was talk to me or sell me a Corvette i wasn’t there for that once i needed a 3500 Dually Deisel Truck to pull my Sportfishing boat and another time i wanted a cargo Work van for a fleet replacement vehicle for my company i wasn’t there to bullshit about Corvettes and already had two of those sitting inmy garage paid for and collecting dust i not against them by any means but the irony was i drove a few miles away to a GMC dealership and wound up buying exactly what i needed along with another Box Truck i didn’t really think i was going to purchase for another few years as i had been leasing one with a large commercial leasing company that i was relatively happy with and this GMC dealership had a decent deal on a new truck they had onthe lot so we made a deal

Maybe some dealerships are picky about who they hire as a salesman, but not all. I recently went to a Toyota dealership here in Columbus, OH to look at Corollas. The salesman was a kid who graduated from college and couldn't find a job in his field. He had no sales skills whatsoever. I said I wanted to buy a new Corolla (with a manual transmission), and nothing else. Yet instead of trying to sell me the car I wanted, he spent 45 minutes trying to talk me into buying used SUV's and trucks on the lot. He kept pushing me towards used vehicles, even though I repeatedly said I wanted to buy a new car only. He also seemed to know nothing about cars, Toyotas, and basic mechanical specs. Needless to say, this dealership lost a sale.

First, you don't need to know about cars or that specific car. You can learn as you go. Second, watch your commissions, I can't emphasize this too much. The dealer will screw you over just as they do the customers. I sold a car at sticker and took the trade in at a steal all I got is $75 commission and the dealer made a lot of money. Dealers have favorite sales people and they will direct most sales to the "Closers" and leave you walking the show room for weeks without a sale. You have to FIGHT for the customers. Finally, all decisions are made by the sales manager thus the back and forth to him with offers, YOU have to sell the manager on the deal as much as the customer is trying to sell you on his/her offer..

I've been working as a porter, while in college at a mid sized dealership for a few years now. If you're young and want to become a salesman, I suggest that you work at a dealership for a while as a sales or service porter. Personally I have no interest in becoming a salesman as I'm 2 semesters away from getting my degree, but it is important to gain experience in the environment you are interested in starting a career in, before you fully commit. Based on what I've seen, if you really like a dealership and really want to become a salesman there, but you're in your early 20's, you should spend a year or two as a porter to get your foot in the door, then become a service writer to gain more sales and general knowledge while making better connections with the general manager and salesmen. Prove your work ethic and they are much more likely to hire you as a first time salesman.

@Michael Jackson most dealerships wont hire an individual in their late teens or early 20s with no experience. I worked there for 3 years in college. Out of all of the dealerships that I went to on dealer trades, I maybe saw one or two salesmen that were under 25. Service writers are another story. Also porters arent useless, most salesmen wont even wash their own car, you think they're going to wash customer cars, take out the garbage, leave the dealership for a parts run or a dealer trade and miss out on opportunities to sell? Didnt think so.

@@jimbobduggar1747 Listen, I was just speaking on my experience working at a ford dealership in the Chicago area, it may not apply to everyone everywhere. I don't even work in the car industry anymore. I never personally sought out becoming a salesman, being a porter was just a job to pay the bills while getting my degree. I watched many of my peers go that route and those with relevant experience whether that came from being a lot attendant, service writer or detailer associated with the dealership generally had more success in pursuing a job in sales.

For guys that want to get into a dealership but don't want (as much) of the high pressure environment I would recommend looking into a service writer position. The selling is much easier as the customers come to you. There's still a lot of politics but it's a good way to find out if you want to stay in the business. Obviously you have to be somewhat mechanically minded to be able to explain to the customer what you are selling. Money can be good but it's definitely a 60 to 70 hour work week.

I sold cars at Mac Grubbs in Columbia Mississippi for a few years. I had no prior car sales experience although I did have some sales experience. The way I got the job took me 6 months. I went in at the same time every other week and said I was there to follow up on my application til I wore them down and they hired me. I got my first bartending job this same way which I stuck with for 8 years and made pretty good money. Without knowing someone this is the best approach and only approach I have found to work. Car sales is dog eat dog so be ready for that. Also go to a new car dealer with a used lot. Don’t go to a shitty used lot, they will hire anyone but it will be a bad job and a bad experience all around.

Everyone and every business deserves to make a profit and a living, but in my experience, car dealerships seem to go out of their way to screw people, even if it's little to no benefit for them to do so. They live their lives by the day/week/month, as that's how the ecosystem works there. The finance guy is always the most dangerous salesperson in the dealership, but many consumers don't realize that, and they have their guard down at that point because they think the negotiating was over at the sales desk. The douchebaggery doesn't end at the sale either, as service advisors are trained to lie and deceive as well, inventing non existent service requirements, lying about needed work, upprice adjusting to females and the elderly, and refusing to perform warranty work. Even at a time where the average consumer is more knowledgeable and has more resources for pricing and dealer reviews, the dealerships still can't help themselves and continue to behave as they always have, perpetuating the term, "Slimy as a Car Salesman". #Stealership

Dude. Persueing any carreer in the car industry at this point is probably the worst thing you can do. Really, the car industry is dead, done and over. There is a huge energy and transportation revolution on the horizon and car ownership as we know it will be history before you will hit 30 and you will end up only having experience in an industry that has become over night. You and millions of other people also cought out and looking for a job they can do with the same experience you have. New car sales will be 80% electric far far sooner then people expect. And once full autonomous cars are legalised and no long need human supervision the bottom will fall out of the car industry completely. An uber like service that runs full ev's and basicly needs no staff to run their business will be able to reliably offer 24/7 on demand door to door transportation subscriptions for pennies per mile. No parking, no maintenance, no depreciation, no taxes, no salesmen, no more scummy ripoffs, no warrenty nonsense, no insurance, NO CAR LOANS etc. etc. Trouble free transportation available within minutes trough your smartphone. That moment is the first time there will be an actual alternative available to people that will cost 10 to 20% of private ownership, is more convenient and without human interaction. It will be like a cell phone subscription. 1000 miles a month for 129,95 or something. Transportation/cars are a substantial part of most people budget and to most people it is just a nessesity they can not go without. Not something they voluntarilly spend houndreds or even a thousand dollars a month on. I can guarantee you that most people rather have a substantial part of their income back then hold on to their car and the responsibillities they bring. The car industry can simply not survive when demand will shrink to a fraction of what it was within just a couple of years. And this goes for manufacture, dealerships, mechanics, used car lots, parking lot operators, aftermarket and car part stores, gas stations, car washes. It will all be things of the past and yet another victim to technology that will have a major impact on our economy. And it will hit the people employed in this sector as well as governments around the globe like a brick wall when it happens. Virtually nobody will see it comming (including car companies) and nothing will be prepared for it. Cars will be toys for the rich and famous, and a few dedicated enthausiasts. Much like horses, at one point people who needed transportation had one to get around. But once a better, more convenient and cheaper alternative became available nobody used them for transportation anymore within a decade. And now they are toys for the rich and famous and the dedicated enthausiasts. STAY AWAY. Do yourself a favor and find something else you want to do.

How do you know if you are dealing with a dealership with a healthy culture? What is a good auto manufacturer to start at for someone new to car sales? I tend to geek out over cars but based on what you have said in this video I have second thoughts if this would be of any value in selling.

victor bozzo it isn’t about the car manufacturer, it’s about the culture at a dealership which comes from the leadership.
