Biomes are basically the different types of land on our Earth, such as desert, dedicious forest, coniferous forest, rainforest, steppe and so on. In the game, there seems to be only a default biome modeled on Temperate Dedicuous Forest - which is the biome found usually in places like Western and Central Europe and parts of America. Hope that helps.

Everything about Outerra just looks unbelievable so far. I think the next step for world generation is to develop biomes, as there seems to be only a Temperate Dedicious Biome at the moment. If rainforest, savannah and desert could be implemented, with different trees and grass - it would pretty much perfectly match the world (seeing as we already have top-notch Earth height maps).

Looks great, as with everything I've seen of this project. But the pop-in is, as with all such things, fairly noticeable once you look for it. Have you ever considered generated impostors for extending the range?

Yes, the full version has 3D grass, people who supported the development by buying the alpha are getting earlier access even to stuff that will be later enabled in the free demo as well, plus more stuff that's not in the demo.

it's pointless to point out flaws at this time because the video is solely meant to showcase the grass, for an engine that is still in development and not ready for commercial release. That's really all there is to it.
@S-Nova0

Yeah that's why I'd call it more of a broadleaf forest environment, despite the coniferous trees. Furthermore, the trees are too sparse to even call it a taiga. Hopefully they will get biomes sorted out and Outerra will become truly amazing.

Please increase the view distance for grass - popping up grass is such a distraction. It's been an issue in arma, and it's an issue here. Please make it at least 1000 meters or provide an option to change it - or better yet, include long distance grass rendering.

It's using 2 million triangles to render this grass. It would need something like 40 million at a 1000 metres. It's not a case of just increasing the draw distance, what computer could run it smoothly?

Seriously? How? True polygonal grass without billboarding? 2 million triangles only for grass? That's almost half the amount of triangles a mid level consumer GPU can output and still maintain reasonable but not great framerate (with very good batching). Oh well, I guess it's back to the drawing board! I need to do a quick polygonal grass test and see if I can get any acceptable results. PS: Do you mind if I try a similar techniques to the one you described in the blog post?

You should not max out every slider in terrain settings blindly, only the terrain quality - with the others one has to be careful because they can effectively downgrade the perf if adjusted wrongly.

Another reason is server-side processing. MMOs tend to avoid non-essential processing as much as possible.

Yes it's based on OpenGL, but it could have been DirectX as well. Many years went into the development and experimenting, so it's kind of hard to simply tell what one would need to make it. Probably best to check out sites like gamedev.net and similar that can provide directions and some help too.

Pretty cool, but the only problem with this is I guess is that they didn't research the effects coniferous trees have on grasses. The needles have a high ph and kill grasses. These trees all seem to be fir trees. The tech demo however is pretty cool. :D

Actually climates and biomes are confused. Climate refers to the overall weather - the average temperature in summer/winter, the humidity, the average rainfall and so on. Biomes are the phyisical conditions on Earth, such as rainforest, grassland or desert. Climate greatly influences the biome, however altitude and distance from the sea also affects it. You can have a continental climate in a dedicious forest, but also even in a steppe grassland.

I have a pretty good setup. Everything is pretty much top of the line except for my GPU which is right under top of the line. Specs: (Asrock z77 extreme 6, Intel I5 3570k, G.skill sniper low voltage ram (8gb), EVGA GTX 580 3072MB. So I am able to max it out with a constant 60 fps but that's not really maxing it out because if you look carefully not all the settings are under "graphics" i went under "terrain" and maxed every slider except the last one which causes a downgrade and i had bad fps.

You have to take into account that this type of grass requires more calculations, meaning extra work on top of everything else that is going on in a game. Add this type of grass to an online game specifically can drop performance big time.

One of the reasons why MMOs have such awful graphics is because they typically shoot for a wide audience, most of which won't have top-end gaming PCs. Maybe in about ten years, low-end hardware will be able to run this just fine.
