The processes implied by the spreadsheet/email combination are often very resistant to conventional process modeling. These knowledge worker processes can create a cascade of reviews, escalations, and approvals that only the knowledge worker and their peers understand. In addition, the decisions that drive the "gateways" are based on judgments and trending policies.
