if you put a rubber band, or zip tie, or hair tie, or any reliable elastic, around the ball end of the basting syringe, it will help you always dispense equal amounts every time. the elastic band makes it so the ball can only extract so much liquid, and never more👍

Beautiful wax, that is a great idea to go from melter to melter. The papertowel you filtered with would make an excellent firestarter if you layed it out and let it dry flat then cut in strips.

Now I completely appreciate why beeswax is so expensive! (as opposed to soy wax, cocosoy etc) A lot of time and effort goes into this also obviously. I just made some candles using a soy wax and beeswax blend. I was curious as to the process from hive to processed. Super interesting!

I don't have any specific recipe. There are a lot of them out there, just find one you like and go with it. The key thing is to get the thickness correct, so you let samples dry and add wax for thickness, or the oils for less thick. Good luck.

Would a double layer of cheesecloth work for the filtering instead of paper towels?
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would probably work. If you are going to do lip balm, or anything you might sell, I would use as fine a filter as possible. You don't want little specs in your wax of your end product. Key is to keep your filter hot so wax stays flowing. Keep a hot air gun on the handy if you have one. Good luck.

I just processed over 90 lbs of honey. I put the cappings in empty supers with a bottom boards. About 2 inches thick. Put it outside to let the bee's clean it up. After they were done, the cappings were dry and flakey.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 жыл бұрын
I used to do that and always wound up with a bunch of dead bees and trash in the wax, so now I just melt it down as is and the honey goes out into the water and I feed the water to the bees. They go at it like crazy. Look on my facebook, I just posted a video of them with the honey/wax water. facebook.com/JeromeBeeFarm

Yeah, I've had my eye on one of those bottling tanks. They are so expensive. My ROI would be like 5 years. lol I use two 5 gallon buckets with a spigot valve on the bottom. When I find my soap book I'll share the recipe for beekeepers soap. We took the recipe and added goats milk and honey. It has bees wax too. The soap is great. It cured my toenail fungus. Rinses clean. No residue and the goat milk exfoliates your skin. Store soap isn't even soap it's detergent. A snarky friend asked if my soap was neutral ph balanced.. like he quoted a soap ad. So I looked it up. Detergent can be pH balanced but soap? Uh uh. Real soap rocks. A soap company paid actors on the beverly hillbillies to ruin the home made soap industry. Home made soap is made with lye. Grannies lye soap is actually the best you can get if you use the right oils.

You do not have to strain bees wax. Melt it then let it cool. The junk ends up on the bottom. We use a candle pouring pot. The nasty stuff stays in the bottom.. By melting then pouring off the top the wax gets cleaner and cleaner with repeated melting and solidifying. Eventually the pot is half full of slum gum so we clean it. I'll add that a turkey fryer and an old canning pot will make this job faster and easier. Use about a gallon of water in the big pot..boil it then start adding wax. When it's melted pour the water and wax into a 5 gallon buck to cool. The huge chunks are awsome.
@JeromeBeeFarm

A little honey in the wax is fine for cosmetics, but if you're making candles, you want to rinse the wax about 5 or six times. Honey infused into candles makes them spatter molten wax everywhere within a three foot radius. That's a fire hazard.😮
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm Жыл бұрын
The honey stays with the water after it's melted and wax solidifies as pure wax on top. I've made a lot of candles and none of them spatter.

@@JeromeBeeFarm I'm not being at all nasty, but I've had wax, propolis and honey all rejected over the years. Not that they wanted to pay less, but couldn't use it due to impurities. The sugar in the wax was a new one, but their whole protocol was because of liabilities. They've bought wax from me afterwards, and pay top dollar. But it has to be snow white and at least 97% pure. They take a small sample, and usually tell me to bring the batch in. Wax will pull in moisture from ambient air. If you store a block of the good in your garage, you can watch it change colors over time. Love your channel! Always glad to share thoughts and experiences. My buyers are sensitive. I might entertain the process of how we do it. Prep the wax for melt, that is. We're making a couple runs this week. I'll put you in the @ mentions.

That’s interesting. I’ve never had my candles spatter or do anything weird that I’m aware of. I give my bees the water after the melt. Usually in the fall and I don’t have supers on. It’s the water and honey mix. Some of my wax is lighter than other depending on how much burr comb I add, or if I heat it too long seems like.

@@JeromeBeeFarm I've grabbed wax blocks that were sticky where I had to wash my hands. I can tell by feel if it's right. I'll meet you halfway. I only rinse the wax I intend to melt for candles. I take the bucket, and dump it into a 55 gal drum filled 2/3 up with water. Agitate it well, then skim the wax from the top. I pick out the new virgin wax for private stock. That's what I rinse 5 times until the water is clear. Sugars and OA residue is pretty much gone. Then I put it in the solar melter on a paper towel to catch any splinters or cocoons that got past the water. The rest just goes into the big melter after the first rinse. Bonus. The propolis sinks to the bottom of the barrel. You might want to dry that in a shady spot and freeze it in a zipper bag. At $100/pound, you'll find space in the freezer.
