Since I was young, I wondered how they calibrated the hole to get the sand to flow at the correct rate for the amount of time. Today I learned they don't; they calibrate the *sand* to take the correct amount of time.

I too learned today that calibrate by the amount of sand; the obvious solution once you're told!

When I was learning how to make real hand blown glass neon signs (not that LED fake neon) in the 70's I made swans and hourglasses. 6:32 what he is doing is called pulling a point which is a fundamental procedure for many decorative and scientific glass blowing.

When I saw the flat spot on the wood bases, I thought, 'Great! A way to keep it from rolling off the table!', but no, it was for mounting on the wall bracket. After thousands of years of making hourglasses, I would think someone would add a flat spot or more, to prevent rolling and breaking. Seeing the hourglass reminds me of all the timers I use when cooking, but the best is an old RobertShaw windup timer that can time up to an hour, I use for baking pies and things. It has a nice loud bell that I can hear, unlike the timer in my microwave, that has an electronic beeper that gets unheard due to my hearing getting bad. However, egg timers and such, that don't make noise, I hardly ever use, as I need a sonic reminder of what I am timing! But they do decorate my kitchen! And they do work, thanks to workmen who construct them to great detail! I will keep my eyes open for such timers in the future, and buy one when I find it.

Very nice work. I work with wood and stain glass as a hobby and would like to try this. I would think that this is boracilicit glass? Does it need heat treated to remove stress?

You don't show how you make sand into glass. What did you use the sand for? Suddenly you dry sand, then poooof you heat glass tube. What???? How do you know the sand will drop in one hour? How do you know how much sand to put in the hourglass?
