I'm 67 and I'd heard the song thru the years but never gotten into it until now. It's January 2023. It's better late than never. This song is a MASTERPIECE of songs. They also sang Conquistador , which was a big hit for Procol Harum.

the greatest songs ever written. 1967 , gary brooker fantastic , hit # 1 at the time in nearly every country of the world .. yes people had to be able to sing and play instruments before and during the 60's and 70's no auto tube, no gimmicks, no synthesizers, no half naked people dancing around ,,,,,and half the time the live performances where even better than the recordings ,,, just stand there with a mic and belt it out.

And props to such a classy and respectful audience...of the performance and others in attendance. Like I love Morgan Wallen, but no need to watch anything of him live, all you can hear is the low-rent audience top of their lungs the entire time, smh...one even throwing beer on him of disrespect.

that is so true .I've been to concerts back in the sixties where the audience was transported somewhere else and when the last note was played , there was total silence in the auditorium . after about five seconds or so , there was some movement and unrecognizable vocal sounds and then the entire place erupted into applause and whistles . totally amazing .

In 1967, the idea of backing a rock band with an orchestra was revolutionary. It made for a different genre of music called Progressive Rock. Soon after, other groups included orchestral backing; the Moody Blues even toured with a stripped down London Philharmonic. The original was not orchestra-backed; it was a basic 5-piece band. But on the success of this song (which was HUGE for a generation) they were about to do bigger, more expensive concept albums, such as "A Salty Dog". This song was marked by Gary Brooker's singing and the iconic organ piece, and Gary's voice had barely changed in the decades between their original recording and this performance in 2006. RIP Mr Brooker, and thank you for this memory.

Huge hit from the 1960s and still very famous, particularly here in the UK! Gary Brooker, the singer, came from the town next to mine and he sadly died this year. This song was on the playlist of Kim Taehyung (V from BTS) in his recent drive vlog...he knew some of the words and sang along loudly. The lyrics are a bit 60s psychedelic but it's an amazing song!

The lyrics are the rock equivalent of a surrealist painting, describing scenes of faces turning pale since about 1384. (The Miller) Gary didn't just sing it, he wrote the original music.

Great reaction, very few people actually care about the lyrics! This song originally had four verses, the final one of which reveals what's going on: the sinking of a ship. The protagonist is a member of a band, that's continuing to play music while the catastrophe is unfolding, leading also to the death of the protagonist's girlfriend, whose face then turns a whiter shade of pale. Very reminiscent of the Titanic disaster in 1912.

Great reaction video! First time viewer here (🤔 just might have to subscribe if you do more of this quality) 👍 I have some comments, interpreting the lyrics of this song which gives it even a deeper dimension - I will share that at the end of this - (and sorry for this detailed commentary, but I think you will find it helpful if you listen to the song again and/or share it with others). Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier. The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a cat named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁 This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night. However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic. There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical. The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did “cartwheels across the floor”, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seem to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks. As the night wore on, the young man was fast becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet even through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened. As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”. The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent. But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously. I know that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never studio recorded (except that there are a few other live performances by Procol Harum that include the 3rd & 4th verse - which makes an otherwise spectacular pop song from the late ‘60’s way too long and it becomes tedious to listen to). The 3rd & 4th verses are also full of images and metaphors which keep the listener always a bit unsure how that story ends. Again, I want to say your reaction video was excellent. Well done.

Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.

agreed, this song was written for ur personal interpretation: the music is based on j.s bach's 'air on a g string', alluring to 'millers tale' which is based on Chauser Canterbury Tales, written during plaque, not sure about the virgins...but its a song of longing, thats my interpretation...btw, i love it.

There is seemingly a whole lot going on in “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. Not only is the instrumental partially based on a song dating all the way back to the 17th century, but there are also references to the likes of “the miller”, “16 vestal virgins” and “Neptune” which truly gives the lyrics a mythological, esoteric feel. But as the man who actually wrote the words, Keith Reid, has explained, his goal in writing this classic was to put forth a “straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story”. As far as hits go, no act could have asked for a bigger success than “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. The song came out as part of Procol Harum’s debut album, which itself is entitled Procol Harum. And the track reached number 1 in nearly 15 different countries, including most notably the UK Singles Chart. After topping the Dutch Top 40 in 1967, it went on to also do the same on the Netherlands’ Single Top 100 in 1972, having also recharted on the UK Singles Chart that year. Additionally it reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite receiving limited promotion in the United States. In fact this track holds the distinction of being one of the highest-selling singles of all time. Or stated otherwise, it has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat. And for the record, as of 2021, only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat. The tune has held a particularly strong standing in Procol Harum’s homeland of the United Kingdom. For instance, it has been recognized as being both the most-played song in public and the most-played song on air in the UK throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. Even more Accolades In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen. Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein. The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.

In my opinion, the song is about an adulterous relationship (the girl sleeping around on her guy). "Her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale" is (of course) the key verse. This is the girls reaction when being accused of adultery (be it merely "relationship" adultery or full-blown marital adultery). Additionally the repeated referral to The Millers Tale, a part of the classic of English literature 'The Canterbury Tales' by Geoffrey Chaucer which was a story of a man being adulterously betrayed by his wife. The first verse "We skipped a light fandango... " presents a man and the group he is with enjoying life an having fun. But everything wasn't well. Something was "off" with our protagonist ("I was feeling kind of seasick")... he suspected something? But our musician protagonist carried on anyway ("the room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away", "called out for another drink so the waiter brought a tray") because "the crowd called out for more" (he and the band pushed through and blew the roof off the joint). But, sooner or later, our protagonist confronted his partner and her answer to his accusation of "why?" (i.e. adultery) was "there is no reason... and the truth is plain to see". The protagonist couldn't get over her ("I wandered through my playing card", i.e. what tricks/stunts can I play to get her back?) and "could not let her be" (couldn't stop thinking about her or trying to contact her). But she was "one of 16 vestal virgins who were leaving for the coast", i.e. she still intended to leave him and go on holiday with her girlfriends for her "fun". And, finally, "although my eyes were open, they might just as well have been closed", i.e. how could I have been so blind all this time? To me this is the most logical narrative (considering the prominence of The Miller's Tale in the song) that fits best. Now I must tell you, the song WRITER (not Gary Brooker, the singer and musical composer) denies my supposition above. But I put that down to later regret. In other words, I think the song writer wrote this song in a fit of pain after actually EXPERIENCING an adulterous break-up and he later regretted airing his dirty laundry (so to speak) and "outing" his adulterous girlfriend (wife?) because the song became an international hit.
