This week on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, the Championship Round consists of a four-person stepladder finals, as our kids compete to put their name on the Coveted Trophy Pin. Among our players this week is one who hasn't appeared on our show since October and three regulars you've come to know by now. Who will make enough quality shots to claim the victory? USBC Silver Certified Coach and former PBA player Randy Brown has the play-by-play.
As always, your comments are welcome, but please be mindful of the fact that not only do our kids watch this channel, but so do their parents. Comments that are intended to be insulting, hurtful or contain profanity will be removed. If you have constructive criticism for our bowlers, by all means feel free to share it. Even if it's misguided advice, we respect that it comes from a place of trying to be helpful. After all, the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling" while we "Elevate Junior Bowlers." Any comments posted here that are in that spirit are absolutely welcome.
Thank you for watching our videos. Please LIKE our videos (it makes us feel good), SUBSCRIBE to our channel to be notified when new videos go up, and by all means, SHARE our videos with your friends and other bowlers.

I just got myself a Urethane ball last week (Hammer Blue). The lanes at my Dad's alley are so dry that I have to stand 20 boards to the right and throw at the 15 board (I'm left handed and I normally stand on the 12 and throw at the 8). Even then, the ball reacts inconsistent. With the Hammer Blue, I basically can stand in my normal spot and throw (I have to add a bit more speed, but the line is pretty much the same). It's kinda cool seeing Charlie straighten it up a bit (I guess to just work on angles). (BTW, Urethane feels like a crayon after you throw it a few times)

Coach Randy, I want to know that what's the different between Pitch black and Pitch Blue... I know that Pitch Blue is a pearl urethane and Pitch Black is a pure urethane. What's that means??
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Iam CHUBBY - Blue supposedly gets down the lane a little further before it begins to hook. But remember, urethane is just not going to hook like reactive. Both balls are going to tend to give you a more controlled, gentle hook and shouldn’t over-react. That said, much depends on factors the rev rate, ball speed, etc.

man i miss the days when i could rev my ball with the best of them. im only 14 but ive changed from this huge cranker to less revs. but i can now place shots more consistently and if i had my revs back i could get more reaction with how fast i am throwing

Its the house pattern with an oil block in the middle and dry outside that makes the urethane look good. I throw an old urethane on a similar pattern that I run down the second arrow into the pocket. When I miss right it runs back hard like a reactive ball but if I miss left it does nothing in the heavy oil.

Is the bronze,silver rating on coaches based on how well they bowl
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 3 жыл бұрын
Uh...no. USBC offers training to coaches, and each level of certification (they don't call it "certified" anymore, but "trained" is certainly appropriate) indicates what level of training the coach has received and graduated from. Each level requires greater commitment, both financial and in terms of time spent learning, for a coach to achieve it. There are four levels of coaching certification, or training: Level I is the entry level. Pretty much anyone with a basic knowledge of how to bowl probably already knows what is necessary to pass the Level I exam. I found it pretty simple. But it's a good baseline for any entry-level coach to have. It's relatively inexpensive to go through the training, and is accomplished online. Then there's the Bronze level. To me, this was the biggest leap in knowledge. The Bronze gets into some pretty sophisticated training. You learn not only about the mechanics of a player's delivery, but you also learn the basics about ball dynamics and fitting. I learned a lot when I went through my Bronze training. The Bronze class runs a few hundred dollars, as I recall, and requires a full day (or maybe it's two days) of training (I forget). At the end of the training, the trainer evaluates all the coaches as we give lessons to bowlers on the lanes. The exam is given online. The Silver training is much like the Bronze, and some of the sophisticated concepts introduced in the Bronze training are expanded upon in the Silver training. Some of it is very detailed. And I would say with all these training classes, who is in your class can contribute to the usefulness of the experience. My trainer was excellent, but I also had two PBA Tour players in my class, and they contributed a LOT of knowledge in the back-and-forth discussions in the class. I seem to recall the Silver training running close to $500 (give or take), and if I recall correctly, was a three-day training. Once again, all the coaches in training are taken out on the lanes and the trainer looks on as we gave lessons to bowlers. The final exam for the Silver is done online, but is far more complex than the Bronze by quite a bit. Not only is there a written exam, but you're also presented with a series of videos of bowlers and you have to pick out what they're doing right and what they're doing wrong. I recall that the videos were of people who were pretty darn good bowlers, so it was hard to pick out much of anything that they were doing wrong. So you really have to have a keenly trained eye to see areas where they could improve. These are essay questions, and back when I took mine, the tests were graded by Rod Ross at the International Training Center at USBC's headquarters in Arlington, TX. Rod has since retired, so I assume that his successor is doing the grading now. I'm Silver certified, and for anyone who wants instruction, I highly recommend finding a coach who is at least Bronze or Silver trained. The higher the better. It's an excellent education program, and you can be sure that a coach who is Bronze or Silver certified knows what he/she is talking about. Then there is the Gold training. Last I checked, there were only about 28 Gold certified coaches in the world, and a couple of them may have retired since then. Gold, obviously, takes the training and experience to a whole 'nother level. To be a candidate for Gold certification, you would need to have spent years in the pro-shop business to know pretty much everything there is to know about ball dynamics, ball fitting and drilling, layouts, etc. Since I only spent a short time working in a pro shop back in the '70s and mostly rely on my pro shop guy to do my layouts, I never really considered going for Gold certification. As I understand it, to be certified as a Gold Coach, you have to go to USBC headquarters at the international Training Facility and meet with the folks there to be approved Gold. It's a big, big commitment, and it's a big, big deal if you get approved. A Level I coach is essentially qualified to teach younger youth bowlers and beginning adults. A Bronze coach is qualified to teach a high school bowling team or high school aged kids and average adult league bowlers. A Silver coach is qualified to teach a college team or college age kids and advanced amateur bowlers. A Gold coach is usually who you would find coaching the touring professionals. A USBC-trained coach does not have to pass any test of bowling skill. Although most of the coaches I know are pretty darn good bowlers. A few are world class. The Silver coach who taught my Bronze class is also a USBC Hall of Famer who, along with his teammates, owns some scoring records at the USBC Open Team Championship. The pins make a whole different kind of sound when his ball hits them. ;-) And no, they don't just hand out these certifications based on how good a bowler you are. Just like they didn't induct Jimmy Johnson into the Pro Football Hall of Fame because he was a great player. (Hint: He didn't play in the NFL, but he was a great COACH.)

coryhess1996 - It might, indeed, be an interesting match. I carried a 218 avg last year and have bowled with Logan numerous times. We're usually neck and neck. I haven't bowled much this year due to an injury I sustained late last Summer, so I haven't had a chance to bowl with Charlie yet. But clearly I'd need my A-game to stay with him. On this particular day, it would have taken a Herculean effort from anybody to stay with him. Ah, to be young and flexible again...

You keep making comments about Urethane and when we commented with each other before when Your "Angle" commercial fooled me, I said then I was going to try the Hammer Urethane until I saw the Angle Series. You of course probably laughed with letting me know it was an old fill commercial. But 30 years ago I would go to sleep and dream of bowling days gone by after a night of league play when watching that Black Angle break on the pocket. I don't know what happened during my thirty years of sleep but it looks like Urethane is returning. A lot of the guys used Urethane at the Japan DHC Tournament just completed in January. I don't know AJ Tackett's arsenal but I'm sure You know he rolled three 300 games during the course of the tournament. The Barbasol Tournament just completed the announcers commented a lot of the bowlers were using Urethane. Anyway, since my Knee Replacement Surgery did not take place in November and has now been moved to March, I guess I'll loose the Summer and will not get a chance to get me that Hammer Urethane for Fall Leagues. Wish me luck, and if it's alright, GOD BLESS and say a Little PRAYER for me!!! Thanks!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 жыл бұрын
bilbo2shire - Some of the really hi rev guys on tour are finding urethane to be the best match for them on some lane condition. A few, like Jesper Svenson, throw urethane exclusively, but they're still more the exception than the rule. I have a Pitch Black in my arsenal and I won a couple of tournaments with it. But for me, it's a very condition specific choice. Great on short oil. I don't have enough rev rate for it to be all that useful on medium and long oil. Of course I bowl exclusively on synthetic surfaces (specifically, Brunswick Pro Lane, the hardest of all synthetics), so urethane isn't that useful to me unless it's short oil. That said, I've recently found a wood house about 90 minutes away. I haven't bowled on wood lanes since the '80s. I'd love to take my modern equipment there sometime and see how differently it performs. If I ever go, you can be sure I'll put my Pitch Black in the bag for that trip.
@bilbo2shire
@bilbo2shire 7 жыл бұрын
Good luck and thanks. The tournament in Japan -DHC- was on wooden lanes. I think I've heard them say most, if not all, the houses in Japan are still wood. I was watching an old tournament while catching up again and it was in Japan. The announcer was telling the other announcer Parker Bohn like to tell people "this is the room Japan built" when he have visitors. GOD BLESS!!!

I think if I were to buy a urethane ball today, I'd want the Pitch Blue. Supposedly, it stores a little more energy and has a tad more kick at the end than does the Pitch Black. I find that the Pitch Black actually hooks a little too early for me. And with urethane, I need that extra kick at the end.

Coach Randy, what do you reckon Charlie's ball speed is on average?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 жыл бұрын
There's an app for that. I don't know how accurate it is, but using my little app in my phone, tapping the button once when the ball is released and again when it hits the pins, I've got his speed at around 17-18 MPH. One of the things these kids will learn as they get older (and better) is to maintain more consistent ball speed (and to vary it as needed). I just measured two shots back to back (both strikes, by the way), and they were 18.0 and 16.9. So I put his speed at around 17-18 MPH. Just a sample.

Urithain is amazing on dry lanes it will hook then. If there is oil it will not hook much then. I recently got a Hammer burgundy half reactive and half urithain the ball is amazing. It can hook on oil but not to much and on the outer lane it can hook back in.

"This showcase match thing." I guess you mean PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR. (It has a name.) The original stated purpose of this series was to try to lure junior bowlers from around the area to come bowl with us. If you can't bowl junior leagues and/or would not be eligible to do so, then, no, I suppose you couldn't bowl with us. Plus, I'd have to get parental consent before I put a minor on the show.

It is really a fun sport. Not really a criticism on Charlie or anything, I like his bowling and how;s hes doing, and the rest of the kids. LuchoVena - Charlie had been collecting these new balls for a while, gathering up his new arsenal one piece at a time, holding them -- undrilled -- until he got what he wanted, and then getting them all drilled at once. One of the new balls is not actually new. The Lock was used. He had it plugged and drilled to fit his hand. That said, he is obviously very fortunate to have parents who are very supportive of him. But with his talent, why wouldn't they be?

I really like what you do with these. But as a proponent of improving youth bowlers, how do you continue to allow Mikey to have the worst hand position at the bottom of the swing possible? He needs more than just being told to stay behind the ball, he needs a coach to work with him before it becomes a worse habit than it already is.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 жыл бұрын
MTUnleashedTV - That's a little harsh. A kid has to show some interest to want to get better. We're not running a military boot camp. Any kid who wants to work at it and commit to getting better will have a willing partner in me and all the coaches we have. Mikey doesn't bowl tournaments. I and other coaches have worked with him during league. But during league, as you surely must know, all the coaches are spread between all the kids. The real dig-it-out-of-the-dirt work happens one-on-one in lessons. I'd love to work with Mikey, but I think he approaches it more as recreation than serious competition. Nothing wrong with that; it means he has a life outside of bowling. We'll do what we can to help him. But for Mikey (or anyone) to make real progress, they have to be a willing participant in the improvement process. Mikey's a great kid, blessed with a great family. The fact that bowling isn't at the top of his priority list isn't any cause for concern. But rest assured that we'll continue to have those conversations with him about how he can improve. We don't hold a gun to the kids' heads. The ones who commit to training and improvement are the ones who typically exhibit the best fundamentals...because bowling is a priority for them.

I guess it's the way the lanes transitioned.

carter west - Logan and Charlie are pretty evenly matched. Logan just had an off game, and clearly, Charlie was in dead stroke.

Logan tries too hard to hook the ball across the lane.

Corey Clifford - I don't think it's a matter of him "trying to hook it across the lane." He just has a lot of hand for someone his age. Other times I've seen him go straighter. I'm a big believer that "straighter is greater." The truth is, most pros throw it as straight as the conditions will allow. They rarely try to max out their hook, even if it might seem that way.

There are just two things keeping me from doing an all-little kids video. First, our "Junior Varsity" league is decidedly smaller (half the number of teams as the "big league"). Second, I've got a couple of parents who are not real keen on having their child's name and likeness being put up on KZbin. I have to respect their wishes there. But believe me, I definitely want to do at least one episode of just the little kids before the season is over.

@Adam Atkins, you're certainly welcome to feel that way. However, this is not the place to say it. This channel is all about "Celebrating Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." Forgive me, but I don't see how airing your personal dislike for a particular child is in any way "Elevating Junior Bowlers." It's more about YOU and your dislike for someone personally. If you have nothing of substance to add besides personally belittling children, then get lost and find someone else to haunt. The kids who are in these videos are not the only ones who watch these videos and read these comments. Their parents (and coaches, like me) do, too. So congratulations, you've just shown your ass to all of us. Surely you have something better to do with your life than to belittle kids. If not, perhaps we should notify the police of your intent, as it's people like you who eventually become a real danger to society. Am I making myself clear enough for you? Be a fan or not be a fan of someone. That's fine. But root FOR someone, not AGAINST others. When kids are the subject, there's no room for your kind of negativity and personal insults directed at children. Get a life.

Yes, I figured you were a kid. No adult would be so immature as to be so personally insulting of a child. All I'm saying is, if you want to participate in the comments section on this channel, keep it positive and refrain from the personal insults directed at our kids. As their coach, I'm very protective of them, and I won't allow jerks to make comments that are personally insulting and hurtful to our kids. If you were bowling with us, I'm sure you would appreciate that. I repeat: Be a fan or not be a fan of anyone. But keep your comments positive toward those you root for, not insulting of those you root against. These are KIDS!
