PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- Episode 62
"2018 Brunswick Zone Roswell All Star Varsity and Junior Varsity Tournament of Champions"
Recorded Sunday, May 20, 2018 for releast on Friday, May 25, 2018
--------------------
It's our annual end-of-the-league-season event, our Brunswick Zone Roswell All Star Varsity and Junior Varsity Tournament of Champions..
Each week throughout the league season, starting back in September and running all the way through May, our league bowlers qualify for this eason-ending tournament by becoming the latest bowler in the league to post league scores that are the most pins over their average. Typically, most all of our league bowlers qualify over the course of the season. And on the final weekend of the league season, the weekend after we decide the team championships, the kids gather for this unique, two-day event.
On Day One (Saturday), they bowl Round One, consisting of three games. This is a pins-over-average tournament, so players are ranked based on how many pins they bowl over their average for those three games. At the end of Round One, we cut the field in half, to no fewer than 8 bowlers.
Those who survive that first cut then bowl Round Two, consisting of three more games. Their Round One scores carry over, so at the end of their sixth game of qualifying, scores are added up and the Top 5 in the Varsity Division and the Top 5 kids in the Junior Varsity division who have bowled the most pins over their average for those six games advance to the Championship Round for the stepladder finals.
And that's what you'll see today on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR. It's ten kids in all -- five in the Varsity and five in the Junior Varsity.
They're bowling for SMART Scholarship Awards. Specific payout amounts are detailed in the show.
Remember, they're bowling pins over average, so for our purposes, we simply take the two players' averages and subtract the lower average from the higher average. The difference is their "handicap differential," and that amount gets added into the score of the lower average player in the very first frame of their match.
So in other words, if Player A has an average of 150 and Player B has an average of 100, then Player B will received 50 pins handicap in their match, the amount equal to the difference of their two averages.
For many of these kids, this is the biggest bowling tournament they'll participate in all year. For some, it's the biggest tournament they'll EVER bowl in.
Three of the kids on this show are making their first appearance bowling on PRODIGY, and they're also completing their first year bowling in youth league. So for them (and their parents), this is exciting stuff.
As always, your play-by-play announcer is USBC Silver Certified Coach Randy Brown, who also serves as the Volunteer Youth Director, running the Youth Program at Brunswick Zone Roswell. Randy is also the Executive Producer of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR and a 2009 inductee in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. For five years from 1997 to 2002, Randy served as the lead play-by-play voice of PGA TOUR Radio and walked the fairways of America with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and some of the other top golfers in the world.
We welcome your comments on the show. But as always, we ask that you keep your remarks positive, at least about the bowlers. They're kids. Some of them are new to the game. The mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." So keep your critiques helpful, not hurtful. Comments made strictly to insult or demean kids will be removed, and in certain extreme cases, the author will be blocked from posting on this channel in the future.
We certainly are grateful to you for supporting PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR by watching the show. If you like what you see, please give a "Thumbs Up" to the video and click the SUBSCRIBE button to receive notification whenever a new video gets posted on this channel.
Also, we encourage you to share our videos on social media, like on your Facebook page with friends, and to tell people you know about PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR.
As a loyal PRODIGY viewer, you are part of one of the fastest growing audiences on KZbin. About a year and a half ago, right around teh Christmas break in 2016, the BrownswickBowling channel had just crossed the 1,000 subscribers threshold. Now, we expect to cross the 10,000 subscribers mark in the next few weeks. We couldn't have done it without you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Again, I have to say that Tristin is vastly improved. His shoulder/upper body position and control are impeccable, and his release is the thing that's changed - now getting his thumb out correctly. And he always has "let it swing." Outstanding! And Christian does not lack power, ya think? Thanks for all your hard work, Randy!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Tristin's consistency is a thing of beauty. He may not put as much on the ball as some people do, and I'd still like to see him not get the swing quite so far behind his back as he does. But the flluidity of his swing is truly something to behold. It is almost Dick Weber like. And that's about as high praise as I can offer anyone. When he gets a couple of little things ironed out in his game, he will rocket ahead to another level. In the meantime, he's quite good already. And clearly, his performance level just doesn't vary much. He doesn't have highs or lows. People ask me why he never bowls that well on PRODIGY. And my answer is always the same: You don't see him bowling the qualifier. He bowls great in it, week after week. He's won twice on PRODIGY. Only a handful have won more this season. Yes, he's probably had more chances than most, but he had to be bowling awfully well just to get into that position time after time. That's my answer and I'm stickin' with it. Tristin's a fine bowler now, and he's going to keep getting better and better with experience and as he gains a little bit of strength that just comes from growing. I know it's hard to remember this sometimes -- sometimes even I forget -- but these are still kids. They are still growing.

This is just my opinion and observation. Brin and a few others do not have much of a backswing. If I had to speculate I think it would be bowling witha heavier ball. While I understand the reasoning behind getting as much value out of your ball as possible and more pin carry, (I did the math and if they bowl 2 or more pounds heavier then comfortable they actually lose power for pin action) my personal advise would be to get them to use a lighter ball(not too light of course) and get heavier and heavier until they get it. Granted, I have no coaching experience and have only been bowling for a few months. What I'm saying is that I am not a coach and you coach them and have experience but this is just something you could possibly do. By the way great championship stepladder as always!

Wow Mikey got a lot better
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Mikey's always been pretty good. The thing is, unlike a lot of our tournament bowlers, other than the PEPSI Tournament, which Mikey would go bowl in (if he didn't have a school conflict, which he did this year, preventing him from going), Mikey has other priorities in life ahead of bowling. So he's not really a "tournament bowler," like Charlie and Logan and Tristin and Josh and Tyrell and Dawson and those kids. So when I hear people talk of how he needs to fix this or he needs to buy that piece of equipment, I just laugh. They don't understand that league bowling is about as far as Mikey intends to take this. He is a competitive guy. He likes to try hard and he likes to win. But it's just fun for him. He won't be buying six new balls between now and next school year. He won't be coming in each week all summer to take lessons. He won't be traveling to Dallas to bowl in Junior Gold. That's not what he's about. I applaud those who pursue those interests, and I'm here for them if I can help as a coach. But Mikey's not one of them. He's a league bowler who is a pretty talented young kid who I'm sure will bowl league for most of his life. But that's about as far as he'll ever take it. And there is not a single thing wrong with that.

Just like the season before, Dominick came and bowled a week or two with us at the beginning of the season. Seemed all gung ho this time, too, saying he really wanted to get back into it. But he only stayed one or two weeks, and then, not only did he never come back, but despite repeated efforts by me to reach him by phone and by email, I coudln't get him to respond. And Antonio only occasionally shows up to coach nowadays.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Assuming you're inserting your middle and ring fingers and your thumb, the secret (if there is one) is to keep a relaxed thumb so you can get it out quickly to impart the rotation with your wrist and fingers. Do not squeeze the ball with the thumb or feel like you're holding the ball with your thumb. The thumb should GUIDE the ball, not HOLD ON TO IT. If there is one thing that will increase your revs quicker than most anything else, it's that. Get your thumb out quick so you can ROLL the ball off your fingers. Don't flip it. Don't twist it. Don't try to spin it around. Just get your thumb out quick and roll the ball off your fingers.

Is it better to keep redrilling a single bowling ball multiple times or redrill a ball maybe 2 or 3 times and then get a new ball?

You know, back in the day when I was PBA, you couldn't throw plugged equipment in tournament competition. I understand they've changed that rule, so long as the plug you use is clear so they can see to the bottom to verify that you haven't put anything in there. I don't know. But I'm still of the mind that once a ball has been drilled, if you don't want to throw it with the holes it has, the best thing to do is get rid of it. But that's just me. I don't like plugged equipment, and especially a ball that used to belong to someone else. Just like I won't use somebody else's toothbrush. But again, that's just me. I don't suppose there's any good reason not to plug a ball and re-use it. I just personally don't like doing so. I will, however, take a ball I don't use anymore and drill 3 more holes in it (for a total of 6), and then 3 more holes (for a total of 9) and 3 more (for 12) and test out different fittings, just to see if I like how it feels coming off my hand. I call 'em "Swiss Cheese Balls." One way to try out new grips. (But ignore the sound they make going down the lane.)

Well, not so fast there Thomas. We've got a few more shows to do before we'll call it a season. Our first-ever PRODIGY *SATELLITE* TOUR was shot Monday night in Phoenix, Arizona, and the camera's SD card is presently in transit, on its way to me. Assuming the footage is usable (fingers crossed), I'll be editing that show sometime next week. It'll be our next episode. A whole new cast of characters, never before seen on PRODIGY. I'm excited about that one. Then on June 3rd, I'll be at Brunswick Zone Lilburn to film one of the stepladders at the Georgia Youth Bowlers Tour (GYBT) Tournament of Champions. I have tentatively schedule June 9th as the date for something I've dubbed the "PRODIGY INVITATIONAL TEAM CHALLENGE." Similar to the team challenge we held last Summer, I'm hoping to attract an elite field of PRODIGY bowlers for this one. If the response goes as I'm hoping it might, we'll film that on the 9th. We'll take the 16th off. And then, on June 23rd, we'll hold our official season ending event, the First Annual PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS. And this should be a true spectacular. All 25 (or however many there are by then) winners we've had on PRODIGY this season will be invited to bowl in the event. And however many there are will be seeded into one long stepladder based on (a.) their number of PRODIGY wins this season and (b.) their scores in a one (or maybe two) game qualifier to seed them into the ladder. All the one-win players will be seeded at the bottom of the stepladder. The 2-win players will be seeded above them. The 3's above them, and so on. One or two game totals will be used to seed them within their groupings. Then once we start the stepladder, it will work like this: In all the "matches" pitting one-win players against one another, the "matches" will consist of a single-ball elimination. Low pinfall loses. High pinfall advances to the next "match." Then, once we reach the two-win players, they'll bowl a two-frame, 9th and 10th frame-style "match," where we'll decide who advances in two frames. Then, finally, once we get to the 3-win players, we'll bowl full 10-frame matches the rest of the way. And the championship match will be two games. The player must win both matches. If they split, it'll come down to a 9th/10th frame roll-off to decide the winner. And finally, the week after that on June 30th, we'll finish the season with an unofficial event (no pin to sign). It'll be our 2nd Annual Adult/Youth Scotch Doubles 9-Pin No-Tap event. This is the event where last year we had our one and only 300 game bowled on PRODIGY. And with the talent we've got, it won't surprise me if we have another one...or two. So there are a few more episodes coming. Then I'll take July and August off. I'll be moving during that period, so no rest for the weary. And then we'll start Season 3 sometime around Labor Day.

While it's true that "most" of our shows are shorter, in recent weeks, we've done one show that was about two and a half hours and another show that was about 3 hours in length. So you might have been inferring that 2 hours seemed short by comparson. I had no way of knowing what you meant; that's why I asked. No offense or rudeness taken or intended. Just wanted to clarify.
