Produce Acres Korbin-registered Belgian Draft Horse and four others saved from shipping to slaughter

While scrolling though Bowie Texas Livestock's recent intakes, I came across a posting of a registered Belgian Draft Horse that was in danger of shipping to slaughter in just a few days. "Produce Acres Korbin" was a registered Belgian Draft Horse with papers and registered with the Belgian registry. He was sire to 54 horses in his lifetime and is only 14 years old. I didn't think this beautiful horse deserved his ending to be at a slaughter house. He also had a resemblance to Finn who we recently lost to colic. After discussing the rescue with the board of directors with the Big Hoof Foundation we decided to rescue him!
A few days later, another 6 Belgian Draft Horses came in together to Bowie Texas Livestock along with some Percheron's from an Amish farm in Kentucky. This situation reminded me so much of how we found the first original 6 horses we rescued that started our farm and this foundation. They came in as a group and we wanted to help the ones we could. Two of the six were rescued by someone else but the board agreed to rescue two of them (Lot# 1035 & #1037). The Percheron's that came in were rescued by someone else as well.
As the week went on, the last two gelding in the group were not rescued. I felt horrible for them and did not want to let two of them ship to slaughter when the rest of the group was saved. SO...we rescued the other two as well! (Lot# 1039 & #1040).
Then there was a donkey! As I watched the video of the Belgians at Bowie, I happened to click on a post of a donkey (Lot# 1042). From her video at the livestock yard, she looked like the sweetest donkey and she just wanted to be loved. Something said we needed to rescue the very pregnant momma and her unborn baby from shipping to slaughter. So...we did!

WE go through about 5-1/2 bags per day to feed all the horses (270 pounds per day).

I agree completely..except for one 19 yr old they're all mid teens and mostly healthy especially the registered draft who is humongous...and sending the pregnant jenny to slaughter!! These Belgians and other Drafts are beautiful animals. They are sweet, majestic and big teddy bears! They deserve to have a retirement fit for a king! Another wonderful group coming home to Fletcher Farms. I just love the mommy donkey, although I felt so sorry for her in that video. Maybe it was just me but she just looked so lost & sad. It makes me so sad to listen to the sales pitch at the auction place, especially when he said that a 19 year old horse who had only known working on a farm could work taxis in the city. Poor horses, It’s brilliant you and the board are able to rescue these new group of wonderful horses, well done. My heart hurts for these horses. They have worked hard their whole life - and then a younger version comes and they get thrown away. It’s so sad! So glad you saved these beautiful horses. They got really, really lucky! And at least these can stay together coming from the same farm. I just wish the situation would be different for them! And I am very glad that you, Corey and the whole Organisation is there for these horses! And my heart broke with the Donkey. Heavily bred and almost on the way to slaughter! It must be truly heart breaking for the staff of these auctions seeing these beautiful beasts being discarded so frequently by their owners. Even more so with the pregnant mamas. These darlings know they have a baby on board and would be desperate to care for them. I thank God daily that there are angels like yourselves able and ( more importantly) willing to help. The second horse, gelding, has a very cresty neck. I'm not sure how common that is with Belgiums but it's the 1st one like that I've seen with your horses. A cresty neck, fat pads on the butt and above the eyes & prone to founder are signs of an IR horse. You might mention that to your vet to check him for IR. I went through that with a horse and with a special diet & exercise they can do well... depending on what stage they are at. He sure stands tall! It's amazing how gentle they all are!!!❤❤❤

Why oh why would these “people” do such a big group of horses to the livestock auction. These animals have given their whole lives to working on the farms and pulling wagons and working on the farm . You are true heroes taking on all these horses , not only do you give them love, trust and perfect homes but you pay for all the vet fees. I struggle with only two horses but that is all I can afford. My two have the most perfect lives and I could never send them to slaughter because they are old. I'm so sorry I can't support you more Julie except with likes and telling people about you and of course sending you prayers and love. You both rock ❤❤❤

You really should consider eventually opening up times when the public and your supporters can come visit your farm and pay, to bring families to come see your horses. It would be a wonderful thing for children and families to see these horses in person. "A Horse Farm Experience," for people to visit. Many peole don't ever get to see farms or live animals. Great save! These horses seem to be pretty healthy! They maybe a good trail riding group. If they are not broken (crippled) they still need exercise. Maybe think about a riding group to raise money for more rescue funds. Maybe have weekend rides on these boys. Walk & trot trail rides around your pasture These horses have worked hard during their life. A trail ride is easy living in comparison & gives them some kind interaction, exercise with people. Maybe wagon rides or in parades too promote your rescue! Riding them in parades too promote your rescue & raise money. Fund raising, meet & greets. These are just ideas for future endeavors. I know it's a lot of work just taking care of them but more people may want to volunteer to help later on.
