I showed the QNED90T because of its price point but if you want to see how a Samsung or Hisense Mini LED would do I can do that comparison if you want? However please emember this about Mini LED while the LG QNED90T is not the best one to represent the technology, there are certainly TVs that have better contrast performance but none of them still come close to OLED contrast even ones with a ton of zones like the QN95C. My point of this entire video though stands for every single mini LED TV currently in stores not one of them comes close to a QD OLED or W-OLED with MLA in contrast and most scenes because of how local dimming currently works on these TVs end up with you having more HDR impact on the brighter modern OLED, some mini LED TVs might have higher brightness but again it’s only in very high APL scenes.

Yep. Oled is king. Is the motion better on oled KG? Strange thing on the QN95C..if I have judder and blur set to low it smooths out panning shots..but there can be frame stutters. And if I set motion to off the horizontal pan shots are juddery.

I concur with you on many points. An OLED is superior as it requires "less" to be considered good or great. A miniLED, on the other hand, often has to work harder to achieve similar results. However, this doesn't imply that OLED always delivers a perfectly accurate image. Contrast is significant, but real-life visuals are not always about stark contrast. Therefore, an OLED's enhanced contrast in every scene doesn't necessarily equate to accuracy. For instance, the Sony Prototype displayed shadow details more effectively than the S95C OLED. This is because pure contrast alone cannot capture shadow detail; it's only a piece of the puzzle. Since very few things are truly pitch black, the ability to display low-nit shadows and gradients from grey to near-black, and ultimately to black, is crucial. While the S90D generally looked better, it too suffered from black crush or near-black crush in certain scenes. The QNED90T, however, is quite subpar. Imagine a QM8 2024 model with 5K nits and 5K zones; the differences in these images might suddenly become negligible. Yet, the QM8 might also experience some black crush. Unlike Sony miniLED, which tends to prioritize shadow detail over black crush-that's characteristic of Sony. They might fall short in some aspects, but excel in others. When you step outside on a sunny day and observe a field or cityscape, the contrast isn't as overpowering as one might think. Our eyes absorb so much light that contrast becomes less pronounced, which is why sunglasses, by filtering light, can enhance perceived contrast. I'm not disputing that OLEDs offer the best contrast-they certainly do. My point is that while OLEDs can maximize contrast when needed, it's worth questioning whether every scene requires such intensity. In most content, the difference would be negligible. Then it boils down to whether you're in a dark or lit room; in a well-lit environment, contrast differences are virtually indiscernible.

I would like a comparison of the U8N vs the S90D or C4. Is there really a canyon of value between the two? Currently the U8K is about 40% cheaper than the S90C ($800 vs $1400). Not a lot of comparisons where one is obviously superior but cost a lot more. I'm right around the $1000 mark for a 55 inch TV so bumping up a several hundred is worry-some

Thanks for another great video. While I agree with your findings in general, there is one big advantage to MiniLED that was not mentioned - work/productivity/desktop. I realize that this was more a TV review than a monitor review, but since many people use TVs as monitors these days, perhaps it should be mentioned. Some would probably mention burn in as well but personally I stopped worrying about that a few years ago.

While I see better contrast, I question if it would be the same as increasing the black levels on LED tvs.. and the S90D, in this side by side.. seems to lose some shadow detail. I like to see those details. So are both types of OLEDs simply crushing shadows and have that kind of light curve (idk the terms) that show more contrast without blowing out highlights? Or is the LED more balanced and true to life? This is of course disregarding scenes were pitch black (pixels off) is what the content intends. Also- is the color difference, the tint or whatever, just showing on camera, or is the led warmer?
@TechWithKG
@TechWithKG 2 ай бұрын
It appears that in person the shadow detail is fine on the S90D maybe a slight crush but I also think that the QNED90T was over brightening PQ so it was hard to get a true read. Color difference is mostly how the TVs are captured on camera and the cameras white balance vs each TV.

Is there a setting on the LG to reduce mid-tones like ST.2084 on a Samsung QN series? I have a QN90B and if I use ST.2084 -3 it reduces mid-tones and gives me a pretty much OLED like picture, colours and contrast are almost a match to my phones OLED, it just has brighter highlights on the OLED when I test youtube HDR channel, 4K Clips and Trailers. It's very very close for image quality so can be adjusted especially if it's over brightened like it is here. 😀 And yes, I would like to see a better Samsung S90D vs QN90D series comparison.

SDR isn't brighter on an OLED. That depends fully on how you present the image in settings. It doesn't follow any standards like HDR does. A MiniLED of higher end can push a white 100% window "sustained" at anything from 700-1,000 nits. An OLED can hit 300 nits as in the best one. The other windows just get higher on a miniLED. So if you crank the settings that is what the TV will show. HDR is a whole different story in how they are "mastered" most scenes are low nits as in 100-400 nits. Then the specular highlights flash on screen at high nits. OLED excel at that. But newer MiniLED might have caught up again now. We don't know until shown. But there is zero question that a miniLED with a base capability of pushing 600 nits or higher in SDR will be brighter. But you also don't sit and watch sports in filmmaker mode.

@TechWithKG....remember Sony chose mini led for its reference monitor. If they thought QD-OLED (even PHOLED on the horizon was viable) could meet engineering goals for a $30K ref monitor they would have used it. There also will be improvements on Sony's new miniLED since you saw the prototype.

Your entire test is invalid. You can't test two different sized TVs because the pixel density is tremendously different, and then you go and make comments on the contrast! Seriously? My local Best Buy had two of Sony's best tvs, one OLED, the other mini LED side by side, same size screens. The mini LED looked a lot brighter and was easily the superior TV.

I would LOVE and OLED. I really would. And I am enormously frustrated that I cannot get one because ALL my content is either 4:3 or 1.85:1 to 2.4:1. I don't even care that it would last only about 6 years of my viewing (were I watching 16:9 content) before the picture quality would be below par. But the problem is no OLED TV maker (or panel maker to be precise) has still solved the problem of screen degradation for those of us who watch 100% of their content at aspect ratios other than 16:9. To be honest, I do not know why OLED TV makers do not have an option, for example, when watching content with black bars left and right to have those black bars filled with the blurred background of the edges of the (usually 4:3) image. I know you can do that in an editor but you are going to have to edit every single video you own and you are going to lose picture quality because you have to re-render even if you are working with ProRes during the editing stage. There is more than enough processing power these days in a premium Smart TV to do this in real time.

This got me curious. So I decided to test my qn90b in these scenes. It definitely looks more like the mini-led (no surprise). However, by reducing shadow detail in the picture settings I was able to get it much closer to the OLED look with no noticeable loss in dark details. Of course, the infinite contrast of OLED is still obviously not replicable. This was especially obvious in the willy wonka balloon scene. However, I also noticed in your comparison that the OLED was lacking some detail in the background, particularly the front windows of building on the left and the trees behind it. (Maybe these details aren't lost in person though, could be a result of the video) Would be interesting to see you test this yourself.
@TechWithKG
@TechWithKG Ай бұрын
QN90B has a lifted EOTF so scenes can actually be brighter than intended leading you to see more into the shadows but as a result of that you have a more lifted look so keep that in mind you dropping shadow detail on that TV makes a lot of sense. S90D here in my comparison may be slightly crushed at times but my cameras exposure may have also been too low.

To be fair. You're using a really bad MiniLED as the comparison here and let it stand as "this is how MiniLED looks like". That isn't correct. There are far better looking and much better contrast on high end MiniLED TVs and this year we haven't even see what they can do. 4:30 This is a QNED90T with a few hundred dimming zones, pretty poor TV. You will not see the same on better MiniLEDs. So sorry it's misleading to say "this is what it is between miniled and OLED". You cannot use one TV to explain all miniLED TVs. I hope you will redo these comparisons with better miniLED TVs.

This is good. I'm someone who has been leaning LCD over OLED. I'm buying either the X90L 55" (or 2024 replacement for it) or the S90D 55". I am sick of my Samsung PN50B650 from '09 that's finally failing on me, being wiped out when the windows are open. I also see image retention and have for years now. No actual hard burn in. If I run the screen cleaner anything goes away. So I wouldn't be too worried about OLED burn-in. For me the bright living room is the real problem with OLED (and us old heads with plasmas still). But the biggest reason I'm leaning LCD is because general image quality of LCD TVs like the X90L and X95L are really not that far off OLED. OLED is better, but I'm not sure it's the gap that existed in 2009 when I picked plasma over LCD then. They've gotten really good, just go look at the Sony stuff as they do everything right.

@@truthx7depends how picky you are. Go to the store and look at the X90L and S90C. The contrast is worse, but the image quality on the X90L is not that far off otherwise from OLED. If you're pixel-peeping, sure. But acting like a normal person and looking at them, they're both really good TVs.
