micro/macro obsessions ... spending so much time getting the Direct sounds tight & sharp, then controlling the ambient levels to blend in balance ... only - the context of the Song - may not require such fussing.

I'm baffled by how people decide what a "good" drum sound is. Obviously, everything he's doing here works in context. But I mean, this video starts with a bunch of weird, washy, pumping/sucking sounds. I have no idea how you know something like that is what you want.

Ten years ago, I read about Moses using room mics with nearly-dead-compression, they called it a "sound sausage" because of its waveform. Thoses sausages were added really subtle to the mix.
