Ryan Hewitt is a Grammy award-winning music producer, mixer and engineer. The son of David Hewitt, a notable recording engineer, Ryan grew up in the music business alongside his father. He was raised in recording studios from a young age, and was able to shadow his father as his career flourished. This provided Ryan with the framework and knowledge to launch his own career, which he’s since worked hard to build into what it is today. His skillset and passion have made him one of the most successful and sought after engineers in the business today.

Another great interview Warren. Although the tips and reviews are awesome, I personally enjoy these videos, and have found some brilliant gear after seeing them In studio tours. I’m a old school dinosaur and 1,000 percent with Ryan: “I like things going through electronics.” It’s true that software “emulates” a signal passing through wire, transistors, valves and transformers, but as good as plugins are these days, they are still just emulations. Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep up the stellar productions.

Re the English Neve's - Studio 1 at Air Studios. It was custom built for Air (different frequencies on the EQ amongst other things & remote mic amps located in the live room) and then later had the Focusrite ISA110 modules added to make it a 72 channel console. A beautiful desk in a great room which I had the privilege of helping install in 1994.

Interesting that I’ve seen those blue Bell Howell cabinets over the last 6 months. My father found one when I was a teenager over 20 years ago at a flea market for $3. I played it for a long time and now my co-guitarist in the band I’m in plays through it with a 2x12. Still sounds great and unique.

I have a pair of the Bell & Howell projector speaker extension cabs. They have old 32 Ohm 12" Jensens in them. Killer sounding. I them got for $10 each in an auction. Nobody, but me, knew they had early 60's Jensens so they didn't bid on them. They sound like late 50's early 60's Fender amps. Nice breakup without being too toppy. Keep an eye out, they are a great way to pick up excellent vintage speakers on the cheap. You can find them in resale shops sometimes.

Go Warren and team, Thanks for another great video. I love hear chats and studio tours. On a slightly unrelated note I have a (FAQ) question that it would be good if you could cover one day. When recording I tend to use 24 bit for quality reasons. However when bouncing a final master I always dither to 16 bit 44.1. Is this still for the best now CD's are slowly losing popularity and online content is on the rise? Basically what bit and sample rate is best for your final product and why?

Hey Warren what is the difference in quality of recording at 24bit 44.1Khz vs 24 bit 48Khz? I can't hear it. Ryan is cool. I met him at WLA Music a few years ago and learned from his talk there.

Without any further processing, it's mostly impossible to hear a difference. As soon as you start processing, especially distortion/saturation, you will hear the plugins react very differently from 2k up. The signal gets some aliasing when pushed, this is why some plugins offer oversampling to reduce these artifacts. However, aliasing is not always a bad thing... Many hip-hop producers are using heavy aliasing effect to color their sounds. Many plugins react differently at different samplerate. For me, with what I'm using and many many analysis, I prefer 48k and some oversampling here and there. JJP prefer 44.1k over 48k... I honestly think that you need to test for yourself, with your rig, prefered plugins, etc... Otherwise, it falls into a debate that never ends.

I've only recently been contemplating the switch to 48 because this M-Audio Octane 8 channel pre-amp I came across only goes up to 48k and I need the channels! Haha! Darnit!! I barely use any samples though, so I'm not sure how much the 96k is actually helping my purposes... Maybe I'll try to find another cheap 8 channel preamp unit...

@@boobo376396k is useful for songs / productions where I might want to use the source material for sound design. Higher sample rate / bit depth can be useful for aggressive pitch shifting and time stretching. Sound designers in the film world record at higher rates to some degree for this purpose.
