Love these mic locker deep dives. love my vintage AKG D190e for metal snares. mic it close and get some shell. be original. Bowie, Orbison, Elvis etc all used the EV Re10 live too. Karen Carpenter used em in the studio even. I like it as a second vocal mic for vibe to blend in and to put efx on

I got one of those Alien8 kick drum mics along my quest for kick drum mics... its all I use now, It sounds like the kick drum I placed it in front of, minimal eq or compression (if any)....

The Altec 633a as Manny said was on a doors session. Bruce Botnicks bass drum mic. I would love a Bk5 and a EV 666. I have two Beyer M380’s. I bought them from the studio that Genesis owned. No one cared what they were, so I bought both of them. I love microphones and Manny’s mic locker. Keep up the good the good work.

I bought an Altec based on your recommendation and absolutely love it on electric guitar and drums as a “sausage” mic. 100% agree with your assessment on what it does for electric guitar when combined with a 57, etc. Thanks for the knowledge!

Ive only use my WA47 on rooms since I got it as well! I toss it out in the hall and crack the door open and it gets the coolest crispy reverb. Or I'll just put it about 6ft from the kit and it sounds great

You know what? I've been using an AKG C-414 B-ULS to record my vocals with for years and I got a dynamic AKG D-320-B (?? not sure, but I think I'm correct about that) for 40 Euros, hooked it up to my preamp/DAW/monitors just to hear what it sounds like and the weird thing was: I thought it's broken! Didn't hear anything (I thought!!), so I kept on raising the main speaker volume until I heard my voice as I'm hearing it in my head coming out of the speakers. I'm so impressed with that little mic! So, it does mean that it's not 100% accurate, because my voice in my head sounds different to how other people perceive my voice, but isn't it cool having a mic that instantly sounds the way you want it to sound? I might actually use this mic as my main vocal mic in the future. :)

Have you tried the AKG202e, slightly different to 224, a bit bigger, thumbs up for Beyer 201, I call it my „truth“ mic…a little tip for you, I live not far from Sennheiser, there is a new version of the 421, shorter, no filters(who uses the filters anyway?) and a new clamp for toms etc….

I use a variation of the Glynn Jones overhead technique too, and vor my live shows too, put an 1176 simulation on it and set it up right, load your close mics for fundamental ton and 1k attack and you have a great mix of old and new, by the way I’m using Sennheiser 900 series for all close mic’ing

You’re talking a ton about drums. I’m a vocalist, and I’m just building the home DAW. I currently only have a Blue Spark, a Beta 58 for live, a Sennhieser 935, and a SM7b, with an Audient ID24 for my setup. I’m still sourcing the right channel strip (not 100% sure where to land here). I am super curious, if you could just choose three of those Microphones for vocals, where would you be???

Those Realistic 33-1070"s... Other than everybody thinking they are RE50's (they look alike, not sure how faithful?), what do they do well, other than being cool "trashy" mics? I have an older buddy that has 3, I'm too lazy to ask him for one and experiment. Just tell me !? lol

I think the Rode NT-2A deserves some recognition and consideration as a vocal mic. It seems to be tainted to some degree in that it is frequently used by podcasters, and we all know what that means - it will be completely disregarded as a "serious" mic by many recording studios.

The Vanguard stereo mic is just a repackaging of the Avantone CK-40 stereo mic.

Not so at all. Massively different mechanically, from the rotation mechanism to the shockmount, and totally different design and origin (!!!) of both caspule and inner electronics, plus a far more versatile little stereo & M/S connection box for the Vanguard, which all in all is honestly leagues better. The only thing similar is the colour, some variation of crimson red, and the general concept of such a type of stereo mic, which is the same as the venerable Neumann USM69 or the frail AKG C426 - and BTW the rotation mechanism of the Vanguard is better, more versatile and less incline to problems than both these legendary mics.
