After years away from production, I'm finally starting to fulfill what was my childhood dream. Having vague recollections of once intuitively knowing how to acheive in the air what I heard in my head, but not quite remembering... I find you here on the KZbins @Warren. Just the mentor I need! What fun, reverence, and energy you intone! I've now only a little TASCAM digital (24 bit/48k) 24 track, a Cakewalk DAW, and a few cheap small and large condensers, but they are enough for now, to hash out working methodoligies again. I look forward to reacquainting my mind with how it feels to conceive a project and acheive it. Early on I realized that if I mixed to please my taste, it was better than people were asking for. I like giving people that thrill almost as much as satisfying my own ears lol. Thanks for doing these videis man! Cheers!

As a part of the Studio One console design team, it was a huge privilege to work on a console that it is still in use. A huge shoutout to Dean Jensen and Don Wolford who headed up the team. It was one of the highlights of my multi-decade carrier.

@@Producelikeapro Oh wow, a reply to a comment on a 5 year old video within 15 minutes? You're definitely a class act! Very sad to hear about Craig's passing, it's like losing an entire library of knowledge. It's great to see how many people loved him and his work. As a novice of production, your videos have helped me learn a lot! From mixing to artist relations and much more, so thank you! Hope you're well and staying safe!

Awesome video! Studio 2 hasn't changed much since I watched the Doobies record a rhythm track for their Fault Line album. Donn Landee and Ted Templeman were so gracious. When Jimmy Isaacson, the Head Engineer at the time, offered me a 2nd engineer job I had to turn it down to finish school. Love the mic inventory. Used so many of those in Chicago & Indy studios in the late 70's & early 80's.

GREAT VIDEO! I was in L.A. this past March (2015) and stopped at Sunset en route to LAX. I told Craig that I was a producer in Tokyo on my way to New York, and he was very welcoming, and took the time to show me the entire facility. I'm very appreciative of him taking the time out to show an "unknown" one of the most famous and important studios in the world!

Sunset Sound! Handclaps sound most amazing in Studio 1, in fact, all our best handclaps were done there. Sometimes we actually lay down on our backs directly inside the echo chamber, almost on top of each other, and hummed our bass lines for half of our first album because a) it sounds amazing, and b) to give our a bass player a reference so that he could play in time while tracking (yet, truth be told, we did wind up lowering his tracks so low that all you hear now is us hummers). Studio 3 was special for us. We wore raspberry berets and everyone had to have purple undies or else... yes, we swore we'd cane the offender! Ha. Just joshin'. We did, however, make that person do lay ups on the b ball court in size 5 stacks, a la Le Prince, and baby, then, you knew you were alive. We called them bunion makers. Viva la Sunset Sound!

I'm just rolling with so much joy right now, i mean the history, that being shared, the introduction to the actual vocal booth, it just popped in his head, an now we work hard to separate vocals,i mean this is amazing just hearing this history...in music...

Craig seems like very pleasant gentleman... Most studio managers have a stifling air about them that can ultimately hinder the creative process, but Craig seems like someone who is actually genuinely excited for you to be at "his" studio doing your work. Props to Craig, and props to you Warren, these are fantastic, and can make people respect music even more so

Watching your videos really illustrates why recording was/is so expensive in a proper studio. I can't even begin to guess how much money is invested in gear here. Just imagine the monthly electric bill for this facility. So much history, so much eye candy for gearheads, just a great series you got going here. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Hi Warren thanks for this flash back in time this room was the start of my transformation from live shows to the recording world, thanks to a good friend of yours and my teacher Mr Jack Douglas. I assisted Jack on the Muscle of Love (Alice Cooper) album that was recorded in Studio 1 we had been in Toronto at Nimbus Studios working on pre production before moving everything to LA. After that toured some more and finished up in Brazil where I became a full time Engineer/Producer for 20 years… Great times had by all…Cheers

Insane gear, etc, but I particularly liked the dog at the end. Every studio needs a dog. Relaxes the client (unless it makes them sneeze!) Charming little, if un-introduced (shame!) little fellow. Well done, mate. Cheers.

Produce Like A Pro Aww, little Ozzy! Well I hope Ozzy makes an appearance in one of your videos. Perhaps when you give us a tour (hint, hint) of your own studio. (speaking of small requests, with your large audience and educational influence, I would love to see a bit on the importance of protecting our most important asset: our hearing! Carrying earplugs everywhere, for things like mowing the lawn, etc. Apparently many artists, like Chris Martin for example, deeply wish they had protected their hearing more.) Thanks, Warren, keep up the inspiring work, cheers.

Been going back through all the PLAP videos since discovering Warren's excellent resource last year and this video has been my favorite purely based on being an extremely badass walk through recording history...not too much technique talk, some great nuggets here & there, the real meat of it was the incredible studio tour with full historical information given by two of recordings big brains. Video should carry a XXX label because that mic porn was obscene! lol Just nonchalantly, "here's 4 U47's, 10 U87's, etc..." Unbelievable! Thanks Warren & Sunset Sound for giving us a glimpse into one of the top flight studios ever built.

I especially loved this video because when I was 20 years old I did some assisting at Sunset. Always loved the sound of the rooms and the sound of those preamps, but didn’t know all of the history behind the place. Side note, you can REALLY hear the camera mans breathing on my Genelec 8350A’s. Like, loudly. Lol No hate though, thanks for creating such great content for us. 🤘🏻

Hi Warren. just wants to say thank you for an amazing channel. I've only just found you and started to go through all of your videos. I'm an electronic music producer but have always had an interest in anything music and production as I used to run my own band nights and clubs and also spent time in studios as played in a few bands. learning from the producers and engineers was great either in the studio or a live situation and still have dreams of doing it myself one day. I'm still only 42 years young :) even though I make electronic music I am still learning loads from watching your videos. so I just wanted to say thank you for passing your experience and knowledge onto us. it's very much appreciated.

I applied for an engineering job at Sunset Sound and actually got an interview with one of the assistant engineers. During the interview, I was asked a question, which, in retrospect, I realize was more of a "what's the personality of this guy?" type of question than a technical one. I realized when I was driving home that I had answered that question 100% wrong. Of course, with ten other guys applying for the job, I didn't get it. It's odd how you see those potential giant forks in your life's path in the rearview mirror.

Nice tour. Thanks, Warren. Small correction though, I think the ELA M 251 was actually AKG made. Telefunken contracted them to make that after they lost their Neumann distro deal. So, no Neumann linage there. Dig your videos and I've learned a lot. Keep 'em coming!

Wow, even I see Behringer stuff, the tube parametric EQ at the back stack, plus probably the 8024 DSP Digital, or the multiband 9024? If you had the option AES/EBU installed they were not bad at all, analog wise, they had a high noise floor so hiss was present. I still have a 9024 AES/EBU, last year I revised the thing. But to be honest, it's more rack space fill up. Also, I love those studios, if you see what is recorded/ mixed and mastered there, it's huge. Moreover, all the Disney stuff, mind-blowing. BTW I bought the echo chambers plugin from Sunset Sound, amazing stuff.
