I play drums in a death metal band. I don't use triggers or samples. If I can't play it without using triggers, I don't. The last album we recorded, we did it live on the floor with overdubbed vocals and second guitar. The album we are recording now, we are recording separately. Guitar first, to a click, then on from there, usually drums next. We always mic the guitar cab. We never use a D.I. on it. We do use a D.I. on the bass, though. We have had excellent results with both ways of recording.

Good on you. If it is supposed to sound like a drum, use a drum!! Vinnie Paul didn't use them in the studio. He sounded fine! It's fine to DI a guitar, it is not like a sample if you use a amp plug in. Totally different/. Now if you can all track LIVE, you will get it even heavier.

This is how I’ve always produced records, rock and metal included, and not only only do people love it, but people come to me specifically because I do things this way. It’s a very underrated way to make good music.
