Very refreshing to see this video, among all other studio videos centered on the daw (plugins and VSTi), where this instead is focused on the miking, the instrument, positioning and mixing together the different parts recorded. Also the walkthrough of the acoustic set and how different parts affect each other and how to deal with it. Nifty solution with the two tom mics where the bottom is reversed by the cables from the start. So a mic-set for the tom, ready to go on to one channel.

Hadn't thought about the spill rejection aspect of phase reversed tom mics. Thanks!

Karl Brazil is such an amazing drummer and the sweetest guy as well! Met him in Buenos Aires, he was touring with James Blunt as opening act for Elton John back in 2009. I was playing in a bar and he, the bass player and the tour manager showed up, so I offered my humble drumset for him to join the band. Then we've been chatting and he invited to all of us to the show! Best memories of him, specially his joy while playing and his terrific energy.

You sir are a genius! You don’t even need to mix those lol they sound so freaking incredible already! The reverb makes a nice difference in my opinion.

This is the very best video about sound quality I have ever seen, this sound you show is so soft, so defined and rich that for me there is no comparison with the rest I have seen! Thanks a lot for such video and your work! Many greetings!

Thanks for the snare phase tip with two mics! Makes a huge difference to the snare sound (brings back the bottom end) when I reverse the phase of the low end mic. Never thought about it cause my old Ludwig snare is so thin that you hardly need the low mic to get the desired amount of rattle/buzz. Now with the phase reversed I can drive in more of the low mic and it won't OD the overall sound.

Thanks for all that, sounded great. Never thought of the 2 604's on the toms, let alone one cable for it. The idea of the phase cancellation from the ambient room was really interesting too. The beta 91 and the D6 was something I never thought of either. Currently using a DW kick which sounds great with a sealed reso head and have the beta 91 in and sometime a 121 outside, but I like your idea. Also liked what the 47 blumlein room sound added to the depth. Lots of good stuff in this one, thank you!

Ok, in the latter part of the video, I absolutely LOVE having things in the window section of the gobos! Can the window be opened to stand the pig up when it falls over or is the pig firmly affixed in place?

Hi there mike Exeter, do you not use gate on the drums? Thanks
@ghostdrums3 жыл бұрын
Brilliant Tom micing technique! I've never seen that approach before. Do you know how the flipped polarity is achieved? I assume it's done by soldering the cables to different tips on one of the XLR plugs ... right?

do you eq the 2 kick mics and snate mics before you sum them, or do you sum them abd eq after
@seanwalsh9993 жыл бұрын
Really interesting that you have a tablet appearing to be some how placed upon the mixing console, I will assume there is some kind of protection for the boards knobs. I am also assuming that all the gates and eq's are DAW plugins, or is that an analogue over digital desk? Or digital over analogue? Thanks for sharing.

Great video and excellent engineering! Q: Which pattern do you generally go for on the snare 414? Thanks!
@mikeexeter3 жыл бұрын
Usually Cardioid, although recently I’ve been switching over to a Beta 181 as it’s built for the job and positioning is much more flexible. (That’s also a cardioid)
@markrobertsproducerenginee9453 жыл бұрын
Mike Exeter nice one! I’ll have to try this. Never quite got on with the Beyer on its own! I was just interested to see if you were going hypercardioid 🤓
@mikeexeter3 жыл бұрын
@@markrobertsproducerenginee945 exactly my issue with the Beyer (whether M69 or M201) the hypercardioid is too papery - I like to hear the shell more

Hi and thanks for this video. Can I ask if you ever get an issue with the bass drum sound in the overheads not matching up well with the sound coming from your bass drum mics? Or are you just EQing all the bottom end out of your overheads? Thanks.

B Roll close up footage not to be confused with the actual recording, this is a top session drummer and clearly wouldn’t leave the key on the kit while recording. The recording here is for a project and giving away samples isn’t professional but if you’d like to to send us your address we will see what we can send you.
