Twigs also make more sense when you understand that for most of her teenage years she was working with jazz ensembles so that elements of improvisation and surprising or unconventional choices are ingrained into her artistic fingerprint. She also is very much a performance artist and dancer so in a live context it makes for a whole experience.

Very experimental but very well balanced, maybe not someone's taste but undeniably great in it's production, don't know how to say but everything hits so well and the timing is perfection. I love Magdalene more as a fleshed and polished record, it's deeper and of course the best she's ever made but LP1 is just damn satisfying experimentation.

One note that kind of makes more sense with her experimental beats: she's a dancer before anything, so in the production process of this album she said if she couldn't dance to any of the music she would fix it or scrap it. dancing is, and probably might be, the main vehicle for her music and that's why some of the beats are the way they are
@triplewells4 жыл бұрын
This is what I thought too! I feel like twigs dances with her music sometimes rather than playing it, makes it unexpected.
@vvvinblue55573 жыл бұрын
I actually like the awkward spaces in LP1 because they sort of symbolize the emptiness in the relationship. Twigs is very invested in her partner, but the partner is not invested, so there are gaps, as twigs sing in Pendulum. Very reminiscient of Hide and Water Me. I think twigs is master of the feeling of emptiness.

it’s interesting to see a producer’s (who’s not entirely keen to this genre) perspective on FKA twigs music especially considering how her sound is so unique and out of the ordinary. the amount of intricate details she and her producers use in her songs are mind blowing. all of the discomfort or sorrow you hear from her productions are intentional and is what suppose to evoke how she was feeling. excited for you to dive into more of her discography especially M3LL155X & MAGDALENE

I just clicked off this video immediately when you became impatient and wanting the hook to come at a specific time into the song, which to me sounds absolutely ridiculous. You don't judge a song by when certain parts come in. You judge it by it's flow, or intent, etc, and not by when things are "supposed" to happen, because not all music follows the same basic structures. Just thought it a little too subjective, kinda basic(again) and while that's ok, it's kinda MEH as well. Makes me think that you've only heard chart music. I'm sure (hope) you get more objective throughout the video

Another thing to consider along with all the excellent comments on this video; The experimental electronic music scene in the UK and Ireland is both massive and very concentrated. FKA Twigs contemporaries are producers like SOPHIE, Charli XCX, the whole PC music label, alongside other genres such as grime, hard drum, hardcore, etc. All these producers and genres use drum sounds often not found in the US outside of maybe Detroit and a few other places. The utilisation of sounds never heard before is a big part of electronic music in this part of the world, and a bit of a marker of skill and talent.

Also, a sense of discomfort is a common feature of music made in the queer music scene, something Twigs is very much a part of. This is something we can also see in SOPHIE’s music. This also applies to music made by women in a male dominated industry, music made by black, brown or Asian people, music made by people with disabilities etc. The sense of alienation and discomfort cause by out of pitch sounds or vocals, tempo switching etc, speaks to a sense of the same in society; not “fitting in” with conventions is part of the musics aesthetic, an aesthetic forced upon “minorities” in a white pop world.
