Twigs also make more sense when you understand that for most of her teenage years she was working with jazz ensembles so that elements of improvisation and surprising or unconventional choices are ingrained into her artistic fingerprint. She also is very much a performance artist and dancer so in a live context it makes for a whole experience.

Very experimental but very well balanced, maybe not someone's taste but undeniably great in it's production, don't know how to say but everything hits so well and the timing is perfection. I love Magdalene more as a fleshed and polished record, it's deeper and of course the best she's ever made but LP1 is just damn satisfying experimentation.

One note that kind of makes more sense with her experimental beats: she's a dancer before anything, so in the production process of this album she said if she couldn't dance to any of the music she would fix it or scrap it. dancing is, and probably might be, the main vehicle for her music and that's why some of the beats are the way they are
@triplewells

This is what I thought too! I feel like twigs dances with her music sometimes rather than playing it, makes it unexpected.

I actually like the awkward spaces in LP1 because they sort of symbolize the emptiness in the relationship. Twigs is very invested in her partner, but the partner is not invested, so there are gaps, as twigs sing in Pendulum. Very reminiscient of Hide and Water Me. I think twigs is master of the feeling of emptiness.

Well, when you have never heard anything similar, you will struggle to find a proper comparison anywhere inside your musical vocabulary. Go listen to Steve Reich - "Sextet" and tell me what it sounds like. [I'm taking a shot in the dark. You could totally know your stuff and could potentially find a completely appropiate comparison.]

@@Novemberxo artists like Arca (who produced the record in the video, her solo stuff is a lot more experimental), Autechre, Ash Koosha, Nurse With Wound, Xiu Xiu, Prurient, Oneohtrix Point Never, Iglooghost, and Death Grips are just a few. I’m still in the middle of diving deeper into experimental music and even with a few of these artists I only know a handful of tracks but worth looking into for sure. Just having a look for yourself too can be fun. Artists who are as experimental as Twigs include Animal Collective, Björk and Clarence Clarity

it’s interesting to see a producer’s (who’s not entirely keen to this genre) perspective on FKA twigs music especially considering how her sound is so unique and out of the ordinary. the amount of intricate details she and her producers use in her songs are mind blowing. all of the discomfort or sorrow you hear from her productions are intentional and is what suppose to evoke how she was feeling. excited for you to dive into more of her discography especially M3LL155X & MAGDALENE

It's a very intricate album. Rhythmic syncopation, weird tempos, synth layers, drumfills all over, vocal processing, chaotic, abrupt mood swings....it's very spacious at the same time and lyrics say so much with so little. I love and yet I barely know it cuz there's always something new with every listen.

Someone else said this, but you would absolutely love Pop 2 by Charli XCX. One of the most futuristic and groundbreaking pop records of all time. It's a true classic that bends genre and solidified Charli as a queen of hyperpop. This is one of my favourite albums ever but i can see where you're criticisms are coming from. I think you would prefer her new album Magdalene its experimental but it definetly has more structure that i think it would give you what you want. Check out cellophane at least cause its basically a sparse piano ballas that really shows off her voice.

I think the album is a journey from chaos to structure. It begins with a hellish, chaotic intro and it ends on a more or less "normal" R&B melody. Her projects after this one ("melissa" ep and "magdalene") are more structured but not less experimental you should defenitely give them a try

I think you actually touched on it near the start of your reaction, when you mentioned the comparisons to choreography. FKA twigs origins was in dance, this is probably where she gets her perception of rhythm. I absolutely loved this album when it came out, and it's still one I love revisiting. Really enjoyed how this album inspired you to create your own secondary melodies to accompany the songs. Especially when you preempted the counter melody in Two Weeks before she introduced it in the final chorus. You should check out her music videos. They are pieces of art. I just clicked off this video immediately when you became impatient and wanting the hook to come at a specific time into the song, which to me sounds absolutely ridiculous. You don't judge a song by when certain parts come in. You judge it by it's flow, or intent, etc, and not by when things are "supposed" to happen, because not all music follows the same basic structures. Just thought it a little too subjective, kinda basic(again) and while that's ok, it's kinda MEH as well. Makes me think that you've only heard chart music. I'm sure (hope) you get more objective throughout the video

Pretty typical. People expect things to be a certain way and when it's not it hurts their brain 😂 To stay within those expectations is incredibly limiting... Hopefully by now he has listened to enough "weird" music and expanded his horizons.

watching you react to this album really makes me realize how unorthodox this album really is 😭 didn't even classify it as that when i listened to it alone. still, loved this video! you've got yourself a new subscriber.

I need ur reaction to Magdalene! I think EP1 it's hardly to listen without a intro in Twig's music, but Magdalene makes the best one! Really excited

If you want trippy production like this, listen to SOPHIE and Arca (arca produced Lights on), plus check out M3LL155X by FKA twigs

I'll never understand the perspective of wanting the actually interesting part of the song to be more subtle and in the background. Like any time I try to listen to generic pop music there's MAYBE a hint of something unique, and the rest of the sound is just what everyone else is doing at the moment. Like where's the flavour? People are really out here listening to bland unseasoned-chicken-breast sounding music

You’d love Magdalene by her. It’s even more artistic and the production is totally insane and very deep/complex just like this album.

Your insight was super interesting! You would probably really love her latest mixtape "caprisongs". It's waaaay more poppy and structured while staying pretty left-field and forward-thinking. Would love to see you react to that after this

I could be wrong but I think in an interview FKA mentioned she had some kind of hearing impairment issue and as someone who has a heavy hand in her music production I’m sure that affects the pitch/tone of a lot of the elements. 10/10 album of me.

You cannot throw something like this at someone who says that THE most commercial Pink Floyd album was their weirdest experience with music. May I suggest Aquarius by Tinashe, again? Start with that and then go for Banks. Björk. Next, try Glasser. After that you might have the patience for Marie Hendrickson. Or go right to Aphex Twin, I guess. Honestly, I only enjoy half of the things I just mentioned. And this album right here is also only half in there.

Another thing to consider along with all the excellent comments on this video; The experimental electronic music scene in the UK and Ireland is both massive and very concentrated. FKA Twigs contemporaries are producers like SOPHIE, Charli XCX, the whole PC music label, alongside other genres such as grime, hard drum, hardcore, etc. All these producers and genres use drum sounds often not found in the US outside of maybe Detroit and a few other places. The utilisation of sounds never heard before is a big part of electronic music in this part of the world, and a bit of a marker of skill and talent.

Also, a sense of discomfort is a common feature of music made in the queer music scene, something Twigs is very much a part of. This is something we can also see in SOPHIE’s music. This also applies to music made by women in a male dominated industry, music made by black, brown or Asian people, music made by people with disabilities etc. The sense of alienation and discomfort cause by out of pitch sounds or vocals, tempo switching etc, speaks to a sense of the same in society; not “fitting in” with conventions is part of the musics aesthetic, an aesthetic forced upon “minorities” in a white pop world.
