Producing music is challenging, fun, and exciting but let’s be honest, sometimes daunting. It takes a mixture a incorporating musical talent with interpersonal communication. Music producers must be able to effectively communicate their ideas to the artist during each session. Some situations will require the producer to encourage and push the artist to give more or take the idea and refine it. There will be those rare and potentially difficult situations that will require us to tell the artist their idea is not best for the project.
In this video, you’ll gain the close up experience and be a part of the intimate process of the production duo You’re Not My Dad consisting of bassist Jackson Eppley and guitarist and engineer Ryan Truso as they produce the pedal steel parts for their original song “Day Drunk in Reno.” Jackson and Ryan make multiple suggestions to the pedal steel player Justin Schipper to guide and facilitate the process of creating the best song.
Bassist Jackson Eppley is leading the pack of a growing and popular trend in the music industry. He has taken his experiences of being an accomplished bassist and producer and is now songwriting and composing original music for film and TV. Nashville is known as a songwriter's town and Jackson has made his home there and left his mark in continuing this tradition. His achievements coupled with Nashville’s variety of music instruments has given this video an opportunity to explore an unfamiliar but highly recognizable instrument, the pedal steel guitar. You will not want to miss 'Producing Country Music with You’re Not My Dad' (and the haunting and moving tones this instrument produces. At least let our KZbin video give you a tease. We know you’ll be hooked!
Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,

"Your version of 'suck' is hilarious." This happens so much in the studio! Part of the job has to be honoring the commitment of the players. While allowing them to be self critical, the good producers I've worked with never let the musicians be so down on themselves by setting too high a bar, or letting perfect be the enemy of the good. Great video! 🤘

Justin is playing a Show Pro in this video. They are great guitars for studio work. Sonically great. For home overdubs you only really need a good DI, DAW and some VSTs if playing wet. The expensive stuff is really for the big guys like those in this video. They need it more. Producing a full record needs it more than just recording a pedal steel track. I do remote sessions and have had no complaints about tone and clarity (apart from a rookie mistake of the steel being mono on one of them). The guys in the studio have sometimes re-amped my playing and worked their magic.

I’d be curious to know what Justin had on his pedalboard during this session. I see a POG, a GE-7, a JHS Colour Box, and what I believe is a rehoused Mostortion. The other row has what I’m thinking might be a Line 6 M5, and either a TC Nova pedal of some sort or maybe a Strymon, but that big white one in the corner is a mystery to me. Any ideas out there?

Sam Gray what do you mean? He is obviously a great player and certainly got most of the way there himself, that's why he got hired. However these guys clearly got him the rest of the way there. That's part of what a producer does.
@SSSammyRCT
@SSSammyRCT 7 жыл бұрын
i would have liked to have seen more about the choices made when deciding what cab to use, what pedals he was using and what signal chain they used and why they were guiding him to the performance they got. like it or not the people producing (who did a great job) didn't really display anything out of the ordinary
@matthewgreene2424
@matthewgreene2424 7 жыл бұрын
Sam Gray I feel like terms are being mixed up here. While those are parts of producing the sound to be recorded those are more engineering aspects of production. Being a "producer" in this sense is guiding the player to achieve what is felt to be right for the song in terms of the part being played. If you search for "how to record pedal steel", "types of amplifier for pedal steel" and research aspects of signal chains that would lend themselves to the sonic characteristics of country music you will find answers for decisions they would have made before they began videoing this!
@SSSammyRCT
@SSSammyRCT 7 жыл бұрын
i would like to see more of what i stated. which is included under the banner of producer. after all, that is a lot of what warren's channel is about.
@matthewgreene2424
@matthewgreene2424 7 жыл бұрын
Sam Gray Maybe in the modern day Sam as producer and engineer are roles that have been more often than not merged together these days. I believe Warren is referring more to the classic role of producing which is equally as important as the engineering side you are alluding to. What is a great sound if at the end of the day you aren't able to extract an equally great part from the player. There will be a plethora of videos and info geared more towards what you believe is absent from this video.
