A lot of people don't understand there is a connection between frequency and antenna length. CB is about 108 inches (1/4 wave) and GMRS is about 6.75 inches. That cute antenna is the same thing as a 108" whip you'd see on a vehicle running a CB radio. Antenna's can be made shorter than this, but it compromises effencieny, they don't work as well. Nothing wrong with liking the "look" of an antenna just know this has little to do with how it functions in it's primary purpose.

Nice video I installed mxt275 and still using the 2db antenna if i replace it with this 6.6 or 7.5 db can i get more frequency or longer miles.

It'll depend. There will be some radio pros that will have differing opinions. Will you get more power and range over the stock it came with? Short answer is yes. I noticed a huge difference in clarity and distance. But that doesn't help much if you're still in an area that doesn't have clear line of sight. That's the important thing.

Are you running with a repeater on your testing. I’m just wondering because I have the antenna that came with the mxt275 and the range isn’t that great. I’m talking less than a mile. Any info would be great.

No repeaters during the test, no. Have you tried it elsewhere? That's waaaay low. Less than a mile? My kid's handheld goes further than that lol.

Kuya, just remembered from my military days, lower DB gain antennas are better for obstacles and mountains higher DB gain antennas are better at open areas like deserts and plains . So you may get 15 miles if you switched your keep to a 3.3 DB gain antenna. I get great reception in wooded and city areas. The higher the DB the shorter the wave length and lower the DB the longer the wave length, better to wrap around obstacles.

Weird that you brought that up because when we are trailing we go to lower wattage weaving through trees etc. Honestly with what we do we haven't needed the higher DB gains yet. But if the apocalypse ever comes...lol

These antennas are not directional. They don’t go higher with less db. They just tell you that because city and obstruction use is all they are good for. A higher db antenna will work in the same environment plus it will reach farther.

Out west? Not yet. But we have plans to do that next year. We've mostly done the south so far. And the reason being is I need to beef up the suspension on the Jeep to handle inclines.

Awesome video - additional thought/suggestion - build a mount that will support the beefier antenna that can fold down similar to the current systems connectivity (building off your insight to route easier and move). This would provide the option to mount higher on our rigs yet be able to collapse when necessary - we all know the higher the antenna the greater distance for clarity. If Midland doesn’t build this kind of mounting bracket someone will. Looked at a few aftermarket ones with that capability online but not knowing the weight and flex of the spring not sure what is currently available would work reasonable - suggest a quick pin release with a few angle options - hey if you are asking for the moon - ASK - lol

I'm using the 28" one and it's great! I've already hit trees with it but the spring is so good it just bounces back. But what I DID do was remount it to the roof along with a rhino rack folding antenna mount. This way if it worries me, I can always fold it down when going through trails with really low clearance

I have always like the Australian fiberglass antenna, on my Toyota fj cruiser I was lucky to found one on ebay they use to sell in USA not sure why they stop , they look very serious on a overland build , you can find them online but seem to be in Australia only , I was thinking of doing a trip to Australia just to buy more antennas for my other overland vehicles I own , I have midland CBS and 2 yaesu ham radios

Midland is such a Joke. Still don't have a handheld capable of Repeater use. Rebranded radios and antennas for more money. They sell a brand and have marketing money to throw around in sponsorships, and people who have no idea what they're doing eat it up like candy. "Spoiler Alert: They're Amazing" translates to, Midland gives me free stuff. Aussie CB is not US CB. The Aussie CB band lies around 477mhz and is FM. Very similar to GMRS and 70cm HAM bands. The US CB band is in the 26-28 MHZ range. 11 meter ish. Oh and it's AM not FM. This is also why our CB antennas tend to be monster antennas because just to get to 1/4 wave The only thing the two service share is the abbreviation "CB". The US public was done a dis service with our CB band being where it is. Just to get a resonant antenna on CB requires 108 inch antenna. UHF CB or GMRS only need about 6 inches. You could buy a pile of resonant GMRS antennas for what these cringeworthy Overland offerings cost and probably never use a spare one. Save your money, put it in your gas tank, and explore more, instead of cosplaying an Aussie "overlander".
