Just came across your channel, and I’m a photographer (landscape mostly) but I also do a lot of arts and crafts and I paint. Many have told me I’m talented so I’m going to take the leap and start selling my stuff. But it is scary! You have a lot of great advice! I’m so grateful to have come across your channel, even though I have been doing landscape photography for some time, doing product photography is different altogether, learning the lighting and setup! Thank goodness I have a good camera tripod and lenses. I’m looking forward to learning more from your videos! Thank you for offering so much great content!

nice result I like to use a long exposure with imaging products, because it does not require many of the complex lighting and reflectors, just one small LED lamp enough with 20 seconds exposure and end the story

Excellent video tutorial. Has been very helpful in understanding the basic setup required for still photography. Thanks.

Brilliant as usual. I suggest that, for the benefit of me and many others, you make at least one of these videos per week (2 would be ideal!). Thanks Phillip.

+glennskitchen I'd make 5 a week if I had the budget and time :)) Unfortunately these are a loss making activity .

Are you focus stacking ? I have view cameras and when I shoot digital I miss the movements to get everything tack sharp. Focus stacking takes up a lot of file space on a computer

Just started watching your channel and i truly love it, I am a full time reseller myself and i listing items for sale online everyday. I usually just snap a photo but i have always wanted to learn more about photography and how to take better photos. I was really messing up by lighting the whole item with bright light and then taking the photo. Now i am getting way better photos by using these simple tricks, The only thing i think i need to improve is how white the background is but not the item, How would you go about doing that without blowing out the items color?? thank you for sharing this video i really appreciate it.
@PhillipMcCordall6 жыл бұрын
I really don't understand the white background obsession I'm afraid, you're selling a product whow that the best way possible. Any more than that you will need to be very good at photoshop to then improve the background without it being detrimental to the product. Only my opinion of course.
@thepicker90796 жыл бұрын
The white background is something eBay recommends us to do so we get better search results in google and what not.
@PhillipMcCordall6 жыл бұрын
what they are refering to is a plain white background, rather than a complicated tablecloth with lots of strips etc. I'll give you an example if your product is white , would you use a white background ? Of course not, don't be too literal about ebays advice just make your product look good.

I may have to try that a few times to see if it helps my sales any. I still like to think it isn't my photos but rather no one sharing my creative visions for the things I create. *grins* - Heidi

great video Phill. What are those grips you use to hold the mirror and black flag called?
@PhillipMcCordall8 жыл бұрын
+Henrique Lopes They are retort stands used in chemical labs. The chemistry teacher should be able to tell you where to get them. If not there are some on my site shop mccordall.com Unfortunately that's only for the UK though.

@PhillipMcCordall8 жыл бұрын
+David Dowson It's a Gitzo head , I bought it new in 1966 and it's been around all that time being used virtually every day :)) I don't know if they still make them but plenty around on eBay.

Great video, as always. :) I would be interested to know what your camera settings were. I'm particularly interested in getting a better grip on depth of field. I've been using an online calculator that has been helpful in trying to dial it in better - www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html Shooting at 55mm (canon kit lens) at F/22 at 15 in the DOF is 1.4 in, which matches the appearance of the photo. (I'm shooting a camera for eBay! Crazy coincidence!) Looking closely at your photo, perhaps your shooting the same DOF and the angle and thin width of the camera keeps it in the bulk of the DOF? Your (or anyone else's *smile*) thoughts would be great. If you've shot another video that covers this in more detail, point me in the direction. Always love your videos, and I recommend them frequently to others. :)

I wonder, how can you make these shots seem more homemade? When I see professional looking pictures in listings I always assume they are just images taken off the manufacturers website. Perhaps one could replace the white background by something less professional like a bright book cover or poster?
@PhillipMcCordall8 жыл бұрын
+ATschTheCube Just leave the dust and scratches but it's a good point :)
@squelchedotter8 жыл бұрын
+Phillip McCordall yeah, what I meant is that when I shop for e.g. a camera, and the photo looks like a stock photo, I won't check the the picture for defects, or even look at it at all. I feel like just like fast food restaurants, which design their restaurants to look cheap on purpose, you have to sometimes purposefully make something look less professional than it actually is to achieve what you want.
