A quick look at a still life shoot , It's a lot simpler than most people think.With very simple light and decent composition still life can be very easy. Advertising photography is often controlled by the art director, this doesn't leave a lot of room for creativity apart from the lighting and composition, so great attention must be made for a good photograph.

I love these videos-absolutely brilliant. Probably the most genuine and authentic photography tips I seen; from an actual professional-rather than these "blogger" style you see so much of these days. Subscribed! 🎉

Yet another great and easy to follow video, I have given my father my first dslr which was the canon 550d ,who at the age of 69 has just started photography,and your channel was the first I recommend him to follow,it's a fantastic pass time for him,i get a giggle when I go to show him something and he says"Phil said the same thing"and I say"I know it was Phil who thought me it from watching his channel, thanks for sharing your knowledge, Willy

very interesting that the photographer is the one calling the shots (no pun intended) as opposed to a post production altering of the image. thanks for the great ideas! Sue

Thank you for sharing all of this wonderful insight Phillip! Particularly the use of mirrors to bounce the light and pointing out the particularity and consideration of light to complete the entire picture.

I like how you used metal foil. It made the highlights look like an ultra subtle cucoloris was used.

I'm glad to see you have started to release regular videos again and this is in your normal informative but quirky style. The photography tutorials aside, I find the little insights into your professional career fascinating. It’s been a while since this image appeared on learnshots, it was March in fact, I’ve just checked. The question that I have for you, which I held off on until I saw the tutorial, is did you consider having the whole of the scales in the shot? A little bit on the right is cut off.
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Howard, no the reason is the attention must be on the product in advertising, showing all the scales would have been a diversion from the bread. We're selling bread not scales :) Learnshots may be off line for a while, I'm afraid as we have a big problem with the server at the moment. Phill

I'm going to have to improve my videos now I know you may watch them. You were the photographer that made me so passionate about still life and I owe you an awful lot Barry. I was so lucky to be your assistant all those years ago. I often think about Carlton Studios. I can only say thank you Barry, for giving me such a wonderful start. :)

This was extremely helpful advice, well this and your black on black (and tips and tricks no3) video. I had this “vision” of doing a camera “advert” image with a laser grid in the background (80s style). Anyway, keep up the brilliant work!

Love your videos Phillip. Great to learn from someone with many years of experience. I have been trying to find a way to light a LP, black coloured vinyl record properly, to photograph, either it being in a light tent or on a table top. Their are no videos of anyone I can find who have done this to show how it is done. Will you please show us someday Phillip, thanks.
@PhillipMcCordall
@PhillipMcCordall 6 жыл бұрын
lit from the rear is the only way, certainly not a light tent, virtually any light behind at the right height should show all the grooves and all the detail. The light needs very careful placing to avoid too much reflection of course.
