Loved your video (especially the arial practice in your gym session, I really enjoy tumbling and floor work)! I am in my 3rd month as a Jr PM (my first role in tech) and this was so cool to see. My company is a mid-late stage startup so seeing your flows + systems helps alot with my small team of 3 PMs. I have a few video requests: - I'd love to hear more about the analytics tools/tools in general that make your job easier and how you use them. - Steps you take prior to a new product initiative (new feature OR enhancing existing) - How to ask the right questions to drive product development - Your career goals Thanks for your amazing content! This is one of the best videos I have watched about a Day in the life of a PM. Thanks a lot for sharing! I have a question for you: How can I find out if a career in Product Management is good for me?
@AlisaHaman3 жыл бұрын
I'm so happy you found it helpful!! That's a great question - I would recommend reading a couple product management books (Inspired, Hooked... etc.) and possibly attending a ProductCon virtual event (they are free, and you can find it by just Googling ProductCon). Those are low-investment ways to figure out if the career path is interesting for you!

I’m feeling very inspired to transition my career solely because of this video so thank you for this! Question: outside of the emergency situation or the very few evening obligations, do you find yourself being concerned about your product once you close your laptop? Rather, how much work are you “taking home” so to speak, outside of work hours?

I'm happy it was insightful! Devs often are able to transition into PM roles if they are interested in strategy and building customer empathy, and are ready to step back a bit in execution! Overall, going from a developer to a product manager role is a pretty common career path!

As a newly minted Product Owner, like you, Alisa, I also switch on my laptop at 8:30, and just go over the emails and schedule for the day. At 9, I have a catch up call with folks from another time zone. At 10:30, I’ve a daily stand up with my scrum team, and after 1 pm my day becomes a bit more hectic with teams from other time zones logging in to work so a lot of meetings there, until 5:30 when I log off!

Great question. I think some FAANG interviews do ask estimation questions which can be tricky - I highly recommend reading Cracking the PM Interview for those - they provide a really good way of solving those questions. Great video, and love your cat! :) I am currently a product specialist and very interested in the tool you are using to assess the product utilization of your clients. Our clients are great about providing feedback, but I think this would give us a deeper look at the adoption patterns! Also, out of curiosity have you taken any specific classes or certifications since becoming a product manager to develop certain skills? I think being a PM is likely next in my career path and I'd be interested to learn how you prepared for the role. Thank you, and looking forward to more videos!

I'm happy you liked the video (and my cat 😺)! Yes you should definitely check out those tools! And I have taken pragmatic marketing, a SQL course, basic intro to Java and a design thinking training since becoming a PM. I think those were really helpful (though they can be costly). I think reading books is a great alternative (I love starting with Inspired by Marty Cagan and Cracking the PM Interview). KZbin also has some really informative content! Also, sounds like if you are a product specialist, you are already on the right path to product management! Good luck on your future PM career :)
