Hey Steve! Great comment around the 31:20 mark about photographers learning by watching other genres of photography than what they shoot. I (primarily) am a landscape photographer, but have picked up so much that I can apply to that from watching the diverse styles & genres that you present in these interviews. As for this episode, Lenworth’s photography is great! Using the black velvet background really increases the impact of the shot and his use of lighting was so good.

Thanks, and totally agree. I learn more from the guests that aren’t music photographers than anything. And yes, his choice of velvet worked so well to focus our attention. Wish I thought that way, hahaha.

Thanks, John! I don’t anticipate people that need to leave bad comments will disappear anytime soon, hahaha. But I have fun at least.

Thanks for the great interview. I like the format of your show. I often listen first to the audio version whilst cutting grass, driving etc. to get the context and then I will check out the image sections on KZbin to see the specifics that you highlight. It works for me.

Mr. Brazill, First of All: Thank you and Mr. Johnson for your brilliant interview and breakdown of this product shoot. Second: I am not familiar with Chanel cosmetics. As such, I do not know if it is common for their eyeliners to be 'embossed' as the one on the lower left is with what appears to be a perfume bottle. The other color that is in full view also seems to be embossed as well but I can't quite make out what it might be. In any event, given the three light set-up, plus the mirror in the case, Mr. Johnson's photograph brings those features into rather sharp relief, which is quite an accomplishment in it self. I'd be interested to know if this was something done during the original lighting trials and/or enhanced during post. Third: His handling of the spot of red provided by the lipstick is superb, from the highlight on the chrome carrying through to the lipstick itself and the bevel of the lipstick being perfectly parallel to the bevel of the chrome tube. Further, the bevel cut angle perfectly complements the angles of both the lipstick and the eyeliner case. Simplicity and elegance throughout. Thank you for yet another brilliant Behind The Shot interview and your analysis of this photograph and the thought process behind it. Be well and I hope you feel better soon. Best Regards, @leCoinBureau

Hey Kurt! Thank you so much for watching, and for such a kind comment. Great catch on the embossing. I should have picked up on that. It just goes to emphasize how spot on his composition and light was. The lipstick in particular. That is something I think most people would struggle to get right, and most couldn’t. I’ll pass this on to Lenworth, and hopefully he’ll have time to stop by and answer that one question. Thank you again!

Thanks for watching Kurt, as far as your question goes the Chanel Brand tend to do some form of embossed or textured feature on there Limited Edition product, so I always try to look out for those as it add interest and drama to the shot. so the four color have different emboss/texture on it ranging from the logo to the perfume bottle shape swell as some geometric shapes. The focus was locked in about a third of the way based on what I wanted to be extremely sharp, so all of this was achieved during the shoot. I would also say when you are photographing products you have more control over what happens as far as nothing is moving providing you have a stable setup.
