Hello Steve and Rudy -Steve first I want to say that I so enjoy your podcast and always look forward to newer sessions, as I listen to you while I am running. I am an "enthusiast" in that I don't do this for a living. I currently use another brand (DSLR) but seriously considering a switch. I shoot action sports, and have always been very curious about Canon. I listened to this podcast first, then went back to watch it so I could see the screens, and now plan to watch the older podcast next. Rudy is fantastic. His ability to explain things is phenomenal. I am off to visit my. local camera store to rent a Canon (not sure which model) and lens to try it out before making the jump, Thanks to both of you I feel much less intimidated and so much more knowledgeable! 🙏

Hi Lori! First, thanks so much for watching, and for such kind comments. Very much appreciated. Yes, Rudy is pretty special. His ability to speak to average non-techie users, even ones that are working pros, is simply unmatched. As to switching, a few notes: If your store doesn’t have what you looking for try LensRentals.com. Great people. I have a discount on my site for them, and they rent everything, not just lenses. Not sure what brand you’re currently using, but I did a show like this with Nikon too. If you do test out Canon gear I’d suggest renting the camera that fits the price range you might actually buy. Obviously, testing an R5 II wouldn’t make sense if you’re not willing to buy a $4,000 camera. That said, the R6 II, or R5 II are great ways to get a feel for today’s Canon approach.

Hi Marc, Thanks for watching. As I’m mainly a live music photographer, I personally don’t feel qualified to discuss wildlife photography in detail. That’s probably better left to someone that shoots wildlife regularly. Also, we did do a new version of this show two weeks ago. You’ll find it as the latest video on the channel. Maybe it will give you some better insight.

I doubt that’s at the top of the list. A search shows that USA Fencing has around 40,000 registered members, more of course in Europe. Based on that small number, one could conclude that the number of photographers is pretty small, and only a fraction of those are on Canon - with a share using Nikon, Sony, etc.

@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 3 күн бұрын
Mark, I'm sorry, but your comment isn't clear. No one mentions what, that the R3 had the Register People Priority feature already, or that some people, you in this case, don't use it? If the first, yes, the R3 does have RPP., and it's been mentioned on my show before, and in many of the reviews of the R3 at the time of it's release, I also do know people, with very specific needs, that used it on the R3 and now on the R1 - I mention one in the show. If it's the second idea, that people don't use it, the fact that a feature, any feature, may only be used by a small subset of the user base doesn't matter. I would venture to say that the overwhelming majority of users have never used AEL or AFL, and most don't even know what they're for, but they have both been around for a long time and people that use them like them.
@Mark.Brindle
@Mark.Brindle 3 күн бұрын
@@BehindTheShot In the video, Rudy says Register People Priority is only available on the R1 and R5 MkII. I have both the R1 and R3, so many reviews of the R1 mention that the Register faces is a new feature. It was released as part of software update mid-2023 for the R3. In my view, Canon virtually dropped support (except for minor bug fixes and lenses) for the R3.
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 3 күн бұрын
@Mark.Brindle Got ya, thanks for the clarification. Obviously I can’t speak to why Canon does or doesn’t do anything, a lot of which seems stupid at times to me, and yes, Rudy only mentioned the R52 and R1 related to RPP, but that’s not a sign of Canon not supporting the R3. It was most likely a simple mis-statement. My thoughts on the matter are this…. I don’t see Canon as having abandoned talking about or supporting the R3, but I do think the R3 was seen by Canon as a stopgap release to bide their time until the R1 was ready. That’s not to say it wasn’t a well thought out and planned product, not at all, but now that the R52 and R1 are out - both newer and with better explainable product separation, I think that’s where the mindset goes. Again, not saying that’s the case with Rudy here, as I know him too well. I just think in the concept of my show being a AF coverage with current systems that his mind focused on (see what I did) the newer bodies, so he inadvertently missed the R3 mention. Thanks again for watching.
@Mark.Brindle
@Mark.Brindle 3 күн бұрын
@BehindTheShot I was not critical of Rudy at all. I lived the video, and the one a few years ago. All I was doing was making a comment regarding the R3, having the ability to register faces. As far as I can tell, both the R1 and R3 seem to be feature equal. Im sure the R1 has more up-to-date facial models. For someone who is an independent professional sports photographer (Surfing, surfing,lifesaving compitetions ect) it is disappointing when Canon drops virtually any updates for a camera after only a couple of years. Seriously, mobile phone companies have kept support going for many years. Given the cost of an R1 or R3 (especially in Australia, an R1 will cost just over $AU10k) to have it basically end of life after approx 2 years. I have two R1's and two R3's. It gets expensive. BTW, I'm finding my missed focus is higher with the R1 than the R3. I think the R1 is trying a bit too hard. The R1 appears to be more sticky, although the images are not as sharp, using the same lenses. Incl, EF300 f2.8L IS USM II & EF600 f4L IS USM II. It's more noticeable with these lenses than shorter focal length ones.
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 2 күн бұрын
Hey Mark, Didn’t mean to say you were critical, just wanted to clarify. There was another spot where a description of characteristics was backwards, so I just wanted to be clear that we all miss speak. I agree that the 3 feels like the step child now with the 1 out. But the hit ratio being higher on the 3 for you is facilitating. I’ve not heard that from others. Makes me wonder if there’s something situational where the 1 overthinks it - for lack of a better phrase.

Great and informative video. I followed Rudy's suggestion regarding the Eye cursor: turning it off made a huge difference! One question: is it correct that the calibration should be done both vertically and horizontally for better results? I obviously started H, but I noticed that it didn't perform very well when V. Or is there a setting to automatically adjust the calibration according to the camera orientation? Thanks

No, not to justify, but to explain. Lighting, position, angle etc all affect subject detection. So it was not explaining missing focus alone. It was explaining why it didn’t detect a subject. Over simplifying doesn’t help.

Can we have something similar covering metering modes and options?
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 3 күн бұрын
Giovanni, Here is the answer to your email, also sent as a reply to that email. Unfortunately, I don’t see that there would be enough metering content for a show. Giovanni’s emailed question: “Hi, any chance you can make a video or an article to explain how works this new option available only in R5 Mk2: Detect Priority AE while AF? There's always been a debate on whether Evaluative metering has a bias on focusing point or not, while still considering the whole area. This new options seems to deal with how much weight is given to focusing subject when metering in evaluative, yet it's not clear if it's just "more importance" than the whole area or if it ignores the whole area and considers only the focusing subject. Note that I'm writing "focusing subject" and not "focusing point" because this option works only if a subject is detected.” Rudy’s reply: “ 1). Evaluative metering in general always considers and prioritizes the area around the active AF point; this can and will shift locations as AF points are moved, follow a subject with AF Tracking, and so on. This has been the case with EOS cameras since the SLR days, although obviously it’s more refined in recent mirrorless cameras. 2). Detect Prioritiy AE while AF: this can seem a little confusing, and we haven’t received tons of information about the feature. But what they have disclosed is that if this is active, and a subject has actually been detected by the AF system, it will prioritize it to a greater degree and give it more metering emphasis than the rest of the scene, at least in most instances. Contrary to some on-line speculation, however, this is NOT a form of “floating spot metering;” it’s still Evaluative (taking in brightness info from the entire scene), but with added priority to a detected subject. How much? There’s no hard information on that; I’m sure it varies depending upon numerous factors with each scene and subject. Again, there’s not a lot more we can add at the present time, at least in terms of information we’ve received from Japan. For users who want to investigate this further, the obvious thing would be to do different examples of stationary subjects with the Detect Priority AE while AF feature active and disabled, to get a general sense of differences in different situations (back-light, evenly-lit scenes, and so on). Hope this helps!” He then sent this second reply: “ Just to clarify, the Detect Priority AE while AF feature applies when an actual detected subject (People, Animal, or Vehicle) is detected and a box is placed over it by the AF system. Obviously, other subjects can be focused upon (flowers, buildings or whatever); in those cases, the metering system reads the entire picture area, with some added concentration upon whatever the AF system DOES focus upon, but it’s not the same level of concentration for metering as if a truly subject-detected subject is being focused upon.” Thanks for watching, ~ Steve

Hi Steve, the explanation you gave about the programming the button for AF and shifting to the second button for other settings, you can now program the 1st button to have a half and full push. the deeper full on push will do what your 2nd button does without moving the buttons. so effectively having 2 buttons in one with a half and full push. when you release the full push it reverses back to the half push settings. Rudy didn't mention this as its more amazing stuff the R1 has ...?
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 5 күн бұрын
Yes, this is correct. Thanks for pointing it out, and a few others have as well. We should have mentioned it, but as I’m not on a body that supports it, it slipped my mind. My fault entirely. Personally, I don’t have this, as I’m still on an original R( and R6. So the question is would I use it this way? I’m not sure I would, for the same reason I don’t use the shutter. I don’t like half pressing. Shooting what I shoot I tend to ride the AF, and the half is less normal to me than smashing it. Hahaha.

The * button on the back switch to Face / Eye, and forces Servo as well. That way if I’m not in servo already, like when I’m in one shot for a backstage shot, it switches. That’s what’s so awesome. You can let it assume to continue the settings of things already setup, or override them - even with the same setting to force it just in case.

Hope you don't mind my jumping in here... was perusing the comments, and saw this one had just come up. You hit on part of the reason for my short rant in the video about turning the pointer off. This is how I suggest you and most others use Eye Control on the EOS R3, R5 Mark II, and R1 cameras: 1. Again, I say turn the pointer off. You will confirm the Eye Control system is working in tandem with your eye, assuming you've successfully calibrated it, by simply looking at the actual AF Area/AF point in the viewfinder (see next steps). 2. With the camera on and awake, simply bring your eye to the viewfinder, look where you want to focus, and press the AF activation button you're using -- it can be a half-press on the shutter button, or a press of any rear button you're using. 3. With a properly calibrated system, and assuming your eye is properly positioned at the viewfinder, your AF point/area will now appear at your intended subject or part of the scene where you were looking. PLEASE NOTE: once you press the AF activation button and the AF Area appears, *it will NOT move again* until you remove your thumb or finger from whichever button you activate AF with. 4. Want that AF Area to re-locate, by looking somewhere else? Just pull your finger/thumb off the AF activation button for a split second, look elsewhere, and press again. The AF point will re-locate there. You can continue this, whether you actually take pictures or not. Finally, remember that if you activate Subject Detection and the AF system identifies a subject (person, animal, etc.) around where you looked to position your AF Area, the AF point display will change to put a green (One-shot AF) or blue (Servo AF) box there, instead of the AF point/area icon. And, if you have your AF Tracking on, the Eye Control process is simply giving you an INITIAL placement of an AF Area; from there, the system will use Tracking to follow that subject or part of the scene, if you move the camera or the subject moves. Hope this helps clarify a few things, and by all means, enjoy your new R1 camera! -- Rudy Winston

On eye control, regarding turning off the pointer, don't turn it off until you have verified that the registration worked properly. Turn it on to validate that it's pointing properly. THEN turn it off. When I first used my camera I tried using the eye control and hadn't properly registered my eye, and the pointer was way off. It will also require different registrations for different users and whether you're wearing glasses, maybe even contacts.

@@BehindTheShot Yeah - right after I resumed :). Mostly I was addressing the part about turning the pointer off - don't turn it off until you've confirmed it's generally going to the right place. On your comment about dual back button setup. I do something similar, but I use three buttons. The third one starts eye control AF.

I would have loved to see this type of video broken down per topic or episodes so you can select what to view. Having a video that long deter people (like me). I know that you can hover and select the topic, but to me is not optimal. I prefer episodes as individual topics.

Thanks for the input, Frank. First, yes, there are chapters in description to jump to any section you want. Sorry that’s not for you, but if I made 20+ separate episodes then other viewers would complain they have watch the intro 20+ times, and the YT system would only show them to people one at a time and I’d have to rely on people being willing to find the playlist to see the rest. I can’t please everyone, and this gives people a single destination, and still a way to watch only what they want. Second, it’s a podcast first and foremost. The extra work to deliver the full show in two podcasts, video and audio only, and then cut it all up and produce 20+ YT videos isn’t something I have the time to do for free. Sorry it didn’t work for you. EDIT: There are 43 chapters.

Speaking of eye control, I just realized you can customize a button to move your focus point to where your eye is looking, and focus at the same time! But only certain buttons have that function.

On the last few questions about focus area selection and what gets sharp, It seems people undestand it as it is telling the system to get the whole area sharp. But that is not what it is. The mechanics of focus have not changed with the modern system. What the focus area tells the system is where to SEARCH for a place to focus on, search being the keyword. Once the system has identified that it focuses on it, and that place is very small. And the rest of the picture sharpness is dictated by DOF. In other words the AF system do not change the DOF by any means, DOF is dictated by local length, aperture and subject distance. The focus area only tell the system where to look and identified where to put the focus location on. In the end it is always a single point that is focused on.

At 2:47:57 when you were discussing the viewer who had I think an R5 that had the Af Get confused, I was photographing Owls with my new R5 MKII and had my eye detecting on and for animals. On my first day it worked flawlessly on my second day it would lose tracking with branches and sometimes focusing behind the animal. I’m not sure if I had made an accidental change to my settings but even the icons for focus had changed when the system became more confused I’m still investigating what could have changed

Hi Robert, Looking back at the question as it was sent to me I don't see if that person actually mentioned using a specific body, but leaving that aside for the moment, there are a number of variables. A) I don't know if an Owl is one of the birds the system is trained on, but I am guessing that should be fine. B) Subject is only a part of the mix, along with Servo, AF Area etc. Someone else made a comment about when I asked when would Rudy suggest the 4 point Expanded vs the 8. This was their example, a bird in a tree, where the 8 points would grab branches more often that the 4. So yeah, see if you can trace a change you didn't expect. Thanks for watching.

@ I’m not using the 4 or the 8 pt with my eye/animal detect. I’m still learning the nuances of the MKII’s AF. I also have the R5. But mainly use my MKII for action, and wildlife. The animal eye detect as I said hit perfect on my first day out but was finicky the second day and was seemingly more confused. But I got the shots nonetheless but I suspect I made an inadvertent change without knowing it at the time
