Games Workshop raises prices for their paints, just a few hours later Vince uploads a video, in which he reviews a set of colors, that are not only better, but also cheaper than GW colors. Coincidence? Most likely, but it would be fun if that was his plan all along. Vince you little devil.

Commenting on a very old video because I took the dive on ProAcryl and have been banging my head against them. I think this is very helpful to watch you use them, I’m on a wet palette and I find that each colour behaves pretty differently / I have to approach thinning very differently between each colour. The opacity is like 11/10, which has caused issues for me trying to glaze. I’ll keep practicing with them, but as you mention in the video - it really requires a shift.

@VinceVenturella5 жыл бұрын
Well, can't help with the primer thing, but this will do the work for you on the colored tips. The answer is really, these would look the same over almost any primer. The paint is so strong when used close to straight, it's basically opaque.
@TheLukemcdaniel5 жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella yeah, i caught that on these, but most of my paints are vallejo model air, other than a dozen or so from asset drop, where a light enough coat would let some of the primer bleed through and give different effects. I've used it before with a mottled pre-shading.

I echo how good these paints are. I really love them. That being said I find their range of saturated bright warm colours to be lacking. They have one real bright yellow but it’s cold tinted. They have one real bright red. But it’s also cold tinted. They make a muddy orange. When you compare to the Kimera base set you see the issue with no “egg yolk” warm yellow etc. I find it strange they’ve added so many colours and not those. So I love the ones I have but I really wish they had at least even balanced temps for the primaries. I also can’t ignore the fact their magenta labelled paint is not magenta, it’s pink. Tons of white added. I use it lots. It’s one of the main colours of my army. It’s just not magenta. Just call it pink ! Anyway. Great review. Thanks.

Question: If someone with a bit of experience, albeit rusty, with wet blending, glazing, and mixing their own colors, were to be returning to the hobby starting at ground zero in paints, which would be the better set of paints to get restarted, the Creature Caster Pro set, the Warcolours Layering set, the Scalecolor, or the Scalecolor Fantasy?
@VinceVenturella5 жыл бұрын
That's a big question and one I am not sure I can really answer. I am a paint junkie and they all have different properties that align differently to your style and the way you are going to paint. Like the Warcolours are good over Zenithal highlighting orlight primer, the Scale Fantasy & Games is closer to traditional paint experiences. The normal Scale 75 and Pro Acryl are very opaque and good for wet blending and loaded brush styles. My best advice would be "Yes" and what I mean is don't commit to the entire set. Go out and pick up one pack (most of them have sets, like 6-8 paints in a set) of each and test them. Play with the four sets, they all work interchangably and it will help you get a feel for your own style and where you want to invest.

From your demonstration it seems these don't need much thinning to use. I've been using the Rich Gold and I thinned it with about as much water as I usually use for acrylics, and the coverage went to crap. Should I not have used much water? I'm trying to Basecoat smooth surfaces and don't want to ruin the smoothness with brush texture.
@VinceVenturella Жыл бұрын
So a couple of things here. I love Pro Acryl, but their metals are average at best. It's a weak spot in the line. That being said, metals in general you don't really want to use much water with them, they have bad coverage for most (I have videos specific to good metal paint lines in the playlist, so check those out if you want to see the best in action), but the key here is you really don't thin them much and you need to smooth on the miniature. What I mean here is you apply some of the paint with little thinning, then you smooth it out and push it around on the miniature to flatten it ou and work it smooth.
@benrichardson5662 Жыл бұрын
@@VinceVenturella thanks for the advice. I'll probably strip my Caladius (for the second time) because I think I spent 3 hours applying layers, still getting some brush texture. I'm going to have to get some gold that doesn't require like 5 layers to get opaque coverage.

Vince, I didn't see a note to this effect in the description or your comments so i though i would comment here. I have the full set of these paints and after seeing your video i checked my bottles and I'm not sure why they did this but even though your samples might have been and say 20ml ... what they show and are selling on their website is 17ml so they are the same amount as the Vallejo paints according to the labels. I double checked their website cause i was wondering if i missed something buying the whole range vs singles or a drop down for 20 ml... but nope. 17ml is all. I was kinda bummed (you definitely are not the person i think of when exaggeration comes to mind and i don't think it was on purpose) they weren't 20ml but still love the paints over all. According to Jen they are working on 16 more colors for this quarter so the range should expand soon as well. I put in an order for 9 or 10 of these paints. I spent about 3 minutes using them before reaching the conclusion that these are the best miniature paints that I have used. The pigmentation gives you one layer base coat coverage for most colors even over black primer. These flow so well that I'm not sure it's possible to get visible brush strokes with them. They wet blend phenomenally well without the use of retarder or glaze medium. To say I'm impressed is an understatement. Combine that with the fact that I paid $3.65 per 22 ML bottle while some 12 mL pots of citadel layer paint now cost over $6... Lol. The only paint that may be less expensive is the army painter but I've heard mixed reviews about their paint. It's going to be tough to buy any other brand of paint going forward

Could you weigh in here please, i don't understand what I'm doing wrong when the majority of people are erasing Scale75. I don't have an airbrush so i paint via brush. I primed an old CD case withe Citadel's Corax white, and i tried out the Scale75 paints on the primed surface. I thinned them with water just like you would thin Citadel or Vallejo paints. No lie, i needed 7-8 coats to fully cover the surface and to rid myself of the brush strokes on the surface. I did the same thing with Vallejo Model paints and a similar color tone and in two coats i was completely covered and no brush strokes. This was with a light sand color too. I even did a Russian Uniform WWII, US Dark Green, German Grey, Khaki, Lime Green and all the Vallejo's covered in two coats with no brush strokes. I contacted Scae75 USA and the guy there emailed me back and said the original and Warfront paints have the same coverage, and the original have a matt finish whereas the warfront have an ultra-matt finish. I also watched a video by Scale75 on facebook where they paint a German soldier's WWII coat with SW38 Feldgrau by brush and they say they used two coats to cover the figure. Am i doing something wrong? Any thoughts? would appreciate some feedback. Thank you
@VinceVenturella3 жыл бұрын
COuld be that particular paint, but realistically, scale 75 shouldn't be thinned like vallejo, it's actually meant to be applied more thickly, only thined slightly and then painted on the surface, like you spread the paint a lot more and move it around the surface. But my honest answer is if it's giving you trouble, just stick with vallejo and use an ultra matte varnish afterward, no reason to kill yourself over a brand of paint.

I've used both kimera and pro acryl at this point. Kimera is also very pigment rich, but they don't feel as opaque or have as good as flow as these. With Kimera, it feels like you really need to 'learn' how to use them. And that's been reflected by several folks I've talked with. It feels like they're more like colors to add into other paints, rather than paints themselves. Getting basecoats with them feels much much different IMO. They're not bad, but very different. Whereas the Pro Acryls just feel like a natural evolution/extension of other paints.

I tried em straight from the bottle, medium thinned, heavily thinned with water, with airbrush thinner, airbrush thinner and retarder, just retarder, and it was a nightmare. i did a control test with vallejo model, citadel and AK 2nd and 3rd gen paints and after 2 coats, the 2nd gen AK needed 3 and the surface looked nice and proper sans brushstrokes. Thats messed up that people who spend twice the amount on Scale75 compared to other brands have to get comfortable with them or get over a learning curve. I also hear the term they're great for glazing or blending; that's like saying this cars amazing it just doesn't drive in reverse.

@@MF-kv8cn Honestly I gave up on Scale, not my favorite brand. They are terrible at base coating and really only excel at glazing IMO. I am mainly back on the Vallejo train, they are the most versatile and consistent IMO.

@@MrMorden00 ya man i thought i was doing something wrong but after so many tries i did some research and found out the paints are just a nuisance. There's a video produced by scale75 on facebook where they paint a figure with a brush and it says after 2 coats, either they didn't use scale75 or they really used 8 coats and said it was two to fool people into thinking their product actually works. I think their product is only meant to be airbrushed because the step-by-step guide i received with my set said to airbrush the base coat, airbrush the highlights and airbrush the shadows and the fourth step said you can use a brush for the smallest of details. lol. have you tried the scale Artist paints in the 20ml tubes, maybe those are better?

Hey Vince, first off thank you very much for yet another great video review. I value your opinion very highly indeed. Problem is after watching your review of the Warcolours range, I went off and bought the full nine yards set from them, unjustifiable as I'd recently acquired the full Scale 75, Scalecolor & Fantasy & Games sets. Prior to that, being uneducated in the who's who of paint I originally was a Citadel paint guy and also had the majority of those paints too! Last thing I need is more paints no matter how good they are, right? Anyhoo these paints weren't available over here in Blighty, that is until this morning... yea I gone and impulse bought the set! I have managed to curb my miniature buying only to (it seems) have replaced it with a compulsion to buy paints! It could be worse, I could play Magic haha! Been afk for almost a year due to a horrid incident where a power surge destroyed my brand new PC but I have replaced that now and I can once again follow your channel and get back on the PMP. Mine have suddenly started doing it today (all of them, new and old) so assuming it's due to the cold (in the UK so not insanely cold but it's all I can think of). Not affecting the way they work or behave at all but it's a bit weird, having to just twist the lid very slightly to avoid far too much spilling out. Cheers

08:50 The pigment most commonly used in magenta paints from artist lines is PR122 and it's naturally pretty transparant. The reason that magenta is covering so well must be because of the amount of white in the paint. Kimera's magenta is made out of PR122 and is still relatively transparant even though it is also very pigment rich.

That all seems right.

Are these comparable to scale 75 in quality? They seem similar-ish?
@VinceVenturella5 жыл бұрын
yes, I would say very close overall, which is quite an accomplishment.

What is the thin ratio for hand painting pro acryl
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are going for, they are quite pigment dense, so you can thin them well down if you like. But as per your goals as always.

can you do a quick comparison of these and scale 75?
@VinceVenturella5 жыл бұрын
They have a lot of similarities. Scale 75 (the normal line) is gel based, where the Pro Acryl is more traditional fluid. Both are great for wet blending, both are quite matte. The Pro Acryl is more pigment rich and seems be able to be thinned more. Both are great quality paints and honestly, they are easily on the level with Scale 75. The biggest difference is simply the size of the range, but that is something that will change over time.
