Since the LEGO patent expired it would have been smart to injection mold the LEGO pattern on the surface so kids could build on top of it, perhaps even add Mindstorms components to it.

One kit per student...The educators are still stuck in the hardware mindset. What we need is a high fidelity advanced robotics simulator for students.

Is the WPILib code running in the simulation framework like the Romis or is it on board? And good thought to add ports for two more motors -- that was a big limitation of the Romi platform.

Yes, it will behave very similar to Romi, using the same simulation framework.
