One tiny thing for anyone a little unsure about where to set threshold. In the video, he makes a small correction to make sure the compressor isn't doing "too" much. My tip: do what sounds good to you. If you feel high compression sounds nice, do that. It's your sound.

Threshold is not "how far to turn it down". Threshold sets the trigger for the compressor, i.e. "when the signal exceeds this dB level, begin reduction according the Ratio and the Attack". The ratio tells the compressor how far to turn it down (for every [x]dB that breaches the threshold, only 1dB will get through).

If you like the compression but it takes away to much low end, a small boost with for instance a pulltech eq át 30 or 60 hz helps a lot for me, instead of the wet/dry :) Doesnt need to be more than 2-3 dbs of gain.

Great tutorial about Compression, i enjoyed it! Do you have any recommendations for a good soundinterface? I have Scarlet 2in1 and want something better sounding. Thx!
@Catandbeats6 жыл бұрын
For a better playback I would first suggest investing time in acoustic treatment (check John Brandt) or a good set of headphones like the HD 650's with Sonarworks. If you are looking for mic pre's I suggest moving your mic closer to the instrument you are trying to record or buying an appropriate mic. All in all, the scarlet is really not a bad interface and you have a few amount of factors to address before you get a new interface :).

great tutorial...Do u (or anybody else) have ever notice the glue compressor's ratio knob working the opposite of how it should? Like a 2:1 ratio having MORE gain reduction than a 10:1 ratio? Whenever I have the glue compressor's threshold set to a setting where the gain reduction is less than 5db roughly, the ratio knobs seems to be wired in reverse. Its only when I squash the signal that the ratio knob seems to be working correctly, and all of a sudden a 2:1 ratio will give me less GR than a 10:1 ratio. I can't for the life of me understand why when I"m getting 5db or less of GR (which of course is what I'm usually gonna want) the ratio knob gives me LESS GR when I set it to 10:1....I'm soo confused, I feel like I'm in the twilight zone..heres a screen capture of it doing this: drive.google.com/file/d/1ZzrZQRZGyu8zGdC0ToUr8HcA7kqnNxH7/view?usp=sharing
@keithmiller5975 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late but basically since the glue compressor was based on some analog compressor from back in the day, they duplicated the feature of old analog compressors which was that lowering the ratio actually lowers the starting point of the threshold. TBH I really wish they hadn't done that.
@birdrustler3 жыл бұрын
@@keithmiller597 It's crazy that I have to find out a critical detail like that from KZbin comments. Didn't learn much from the video tbh, but this realization is blowing my mind. So changing the ratio also lowers the threshold on the glue compressor... They should have made that more obvious, wtf.

Do you always sertyour Release time fast to the 0 mark every time you compress your drum group? Also would you recommend Ratio = 2 always and not 4 for glueing the drums ? Is ration = 2 your preference? thanks
@sh-kw2ox2 жыл бұрын
Best for drum buss is either 3:1 or 4:1 with slow attack to let the kick transient through and quick release . Set your threshold so you get 2-3 dB of compression tops then match the input volume with the make up volume. Search hanns beiger drums, top German engineer shows you the best way. Alternatively to this you can use a high ratio so its basically limiting with a very low threshold, smash the drums and blend it In parallel with a dry drum signal

@davidpicarazzi6 жыл бұрын
Also is it okay to use parallel compression with this method too
@Catandbeats6 жыл бұрын
Attack up release down to get the first transient of the drum hits to come through. For parallel compression try fast attack (all the way left and fast release).. Slam it and use the dry wet knob till you feel it sits nice.
@Catandbeats6 жыл бұрын
Try both and see what works best for you. Make sure to also check the internal sidechain function so that the you keep the low end in your drumbus.

I noticed that the utility in the effect chain of the drum bus is in the beginning and boosting the volume. As far as I can see on the audio meters on the chain that there is clipping. I would put the gain to the end of the chain. Also, the threshold on a compressor is the threshold where the compression gets activated. Otherwise, thanks for the great tutorial. I do some micro-production tips on my Instagram: instagram.com/psiger_records/ hope to see some of you guys there! Cheers 🤗
