This is just scintillating. Such a brilliant, captivating, incisive, economical, and lucid lecture. Just perfect.

I first listened to this 3 years ago and found it brilliant. This time around, I found it even better. The one glitch in the lecturer's presentation: his belief that Israelis would take a skeptical view of his claim that the situation of American Jews was just fine. Turns out their sense of history (at least, in this case) was more acute than his -- to which I'm sure he'd be the first to admit.

That was super interesting and helpful. A very disciplined speaker, looking at his watch, and driving toward his thesis in an interesting and logical way. ------After finally getting to a level of understanding about the Protestant Bible I finally know enough about it to ask, what happened between the Old Testament, as we call it, and the New?? So at last I feel confident enough to look at the Books of the Maccabees. What a helpful start to my reading.

Maccabees is indispensable for understanding the New Testament. Most Christians are lost without a map because they disregard these valuable writings.

I just realised how important it is. I am reading 1 Maccabees again now and will listen to 2 on audiobook on here

You are absolutely right. And so many pseudo Christian cults thrive because Maccabees is excluded from the protestant canon.

Well I only found out today that Israel had gained independence from the Seleucid back then and enjoyed autonomy under The Romans until Herod 1 and then the chaos of The Zealots that culminated in AD70. It has blown my mind.

As a Protestant, I completely agree. It’s canon for me

I think the conclusion could be a bit harsh, but not unjustified. Consider that Daniel and Ezekiel are Diaspora from the Holy Land when they wrote the books, the simple fact of it being a Diaspora and written in Greek should not necessarily disqualify it. By 70 BC, 40% of all inscriptions in the City of Jerusalem is using Greek. The concern which he did not say it out, there are practices in the 2nd Maccabees which does not flow into the theology of the Old Testament. These includes, atoning for the death, and the martyrdom. The first book tastes like some empire story which censored GOD in the article. In those prayers and actions in 2nd Maccabees (since they are influenced by the Hellenistic Culture), how many of those is an outcome of a cultural thoughts.

What do you KNOW of God's PROMISE to re-establish Israel? What do you know of Gamatria? What do you know Deuteronomy 30:3? What do you think of Israel? Is God's PROMISED land in Africa or Israel? If Africa has the Holy Temple, where is it and where are your Rabbis?

The Jews obviously did alright when Xerxes ruled the Persian who married Esther being the Son of Darius who ruled after the conquest of Babylon. Xerxes, the Persian king wrote letters to Esdras and did he also write to Nehemiah or Zerubabbel to start the building of the second temple? I view all this ancient history as necessary but view it differently from Jewish Historians and Rabbis because it has a different purpose today than it did back in the days of the Persian and Macedonian battle. Today the purpose of these histories is significant for the coming again of the Jewish Messiah. And yes Yehoshua was the Son of God who was crucified. He was loving, caring and gently to all but the Pharisees sought to have him crucified because not only Jews but Greeks and Romans were listening to his teachings. By the writings attributed to the apostles Paul and John I have read the promise that God would again bring His Firstborn into the inhabited earth. That was to be this time-period and it involved the priesthood from Phinehas whose offspring would inherit the priesthood to time-indefinite Numbers 25:10-13. This corresponds with an ancient parchment that reads "After 40yrs from the death of the Beloved Teacher, there comes to destruction those who sided with the man of the lie, after that the Messiah of Aaron and Israel appears. Perhaps not verbatim. These factors could as I believe corresponds with our Patriarch Jacob's prophesy of two blessings Genesis 49:25 of two births of one Messiah. This would follow the coming of Shiloh after the Sceptre and Commanders Staff did depart from between Judah''s feet as foretold Genesis 49:10. Because from the time of Babylonian captivity no king ruled from Judah's linage.
