In comparison to the other guys? Yes but I think Julia might have drawn it in at a later point in her life in, on top of that she specifically chose this one, that doesn't necessarily mean it's her oldest. That's in defence of the other three who really started from their darker beginnings.

@@lettuceprime4922 I guess Nathan's the one who made the most improvements. (This next edit is a little bit long, but I think I could explain what I mean better with this.) (It's not really about how many years passed, it's more about how much they improved since they were drawn, outside of Julia we have faint implications of when they were drawn, Nathan drew his six years ago, Jacob drew his before that, and Karina drew hers when she was a teenager, out of them all I think Karina and Jacob improved the most, out of them all Julia improved the least, because as said before, it was a style change, not an improvement, Julia herself mentions that she liked the drawing she picked and just wanted to draw it again, it's not necessarily breaking the rules, but it does make her look better than everyone else.)

@@DreamerFromTheDepths im like, really late to this but I'm watching this video again & going through the comments soo yea But yea, Julia definitely has the least stylistic change in hers & it does make her look better. But what I think has happened is that her techniques have changed, not much the style. Which is also a valid improvement just not as visual. My style hasn't really changed during the past year, but I've evolved in other ways. Now i actually have an idea how to do digital art :")

When Julia mentioned “did any of us do sketches before we started drawing? No we started with the face and went from there” and I just had a MASSIVE flashback to my days in the 7th grade, and remembering how the only reason I started doing a sketch is because some rando on my Wattpad account said to.

Hearing the difference between Karina and Julia's reactions to their old art is so funny. I think it's really sweet that Karina doesn't hate her old art the way most of us former weebs do, and I think that shows we do our past selves a disservice. Kids are kids, they enjoy things and we were all proud of our art at one point. It's not cringe to learn how to draw.

@@eatmypanart Sorry if I use more detail than you need, I only want to make sure what I say helps! A "ledge" is like a shelf or a cliff, it just means something flat that is above the ground, usually somewhere you could fall off from. A background is what is behind the more important things in the picture (like the people). So, when Karina said she used a ledge as a background when she was young, she was joking about using the simple shape of something flat and up high, instead of a more detailed/better shape

Mary Desrosiers Hi! I don’t know what your art style is but I just wanna let you know that soft shading is ok sometimes! Using a mixture of hard and soft edges is your friend, Here’s what I mean : www.deviantart.com/vetyr/art/More-edge-tips-668385814 And this one... www.deviantart.com/vetyr/art/Edges-624600004 also be careful when using any random tutorial of google, some of them are really bad...
@foxygrin
@foxygrin 4 жыл бұрын
@@parhelichor whether or not the shadow's edge is blurry depends on what kind of shadow it is. Is it a: A) cast shadow, think the shadow on the ground behind a tree. These are sharp. B) form shadow, a much less intense shadow wrapping around the form, say from the middle of the tree to the edge of the tree. That one's going to be blurry. A lot of cell shaded art only has cast shadow like shading. Only having form shadows never really works though, it's generally too muddy. I personally use both, but it really depends on your style.
@MrWTFgameplay
@MrWTFgameplay 4 жыл бұрын
Mary Desrosiers if you want an artist that explains shadows and forms well just watch sinixdesign. He explains how hard edges, lost(soft) edges, detail in shadow, colour in shadow work. Basically if there is something you don’t know about how forms, folds, shadows, reflections, light and detail work (in correspendence to eachother as well) then he has a video. And though his colouring technique is painting for most of the time, his techniques will probably apply to whatever style you have since they are both simplifications and in-depth studies of the basics. What i’m trying to say is that he is just a good teacher when it comes to art (and sometimes being a good person :D). He even teaches at pretty good schools and conventions. Pls do yourself and him a favor and check him out, you might like it!

To be fair, I'm pretty sure that about 80% of it usually looking bad comes from, ya know, it being an easy thing beginners grab when they want some shading and thus generally being used by people that already don't really have a lot of experience. But then you kinda have to become good to make suboptimal tools work and the best way to do that is use tools that are more suited to a job since trying to do good things while your tools are actively fighting you is really frustrating and makes even just getting better itself so much harder. (Definitely the case with watercolours, if you want to start, use decent paper and decent paints. Maybe ask a friend if you can borrow some but the watercolours we give kids really aren't suited for actually painting with them.)

My theory for why younger artists go to the airbrush tool first: Harder brushes require more commitment. If you mess up anatomy or perspective, it is much more obvious when there is more contrast. Using less contrast or softer brushes help to hide those mistakes.

Kali Bakely a combination of soft edges and hard edges. If you wanna know more, look up sinix design he’s a good art-teacher. I have caught myself recommending him a lot in comment sections lately, so if u see me somewhere around here that’s probs what I’m talking about :D. Check him out, he’s cool and a good artist!

Erevyone: Shows an old bad drawing and shows how much they evolved. Julia: Shows a PERFECTLY FINICHED piece in a cool style and makes it EVEN COOLER. I love all of them but the contrast was so funny por me.

I needed this. I’ve been stuck in a rut for a bit as an artist in a bigger project. This constant insecurity of ‘This isn’t good enough for something that will be published’. I’m 19. I see 13 yr olds doing stuff I could only imagine doing. And then, my four favourite artists in the world, all late 20’s to early 30’s, recreate their older art that they’re not so proud of. I feel so much better I could cry. I should really redraw some of little me’s art. Give her some well deserved fanart. 💙

Crazy to compare yourself to random child prodigies that probably aren’t even happy in life! Don’t do that wtf! Look up Grandma Moses. Didn’t start painting/getting recognition until she was elderly and turned out to be a massively famous and admired artist for her intuitive and personal take on art

this is such a great episode. Seeing Karina's anime shipping nonsense and being reminded of that awful middle school phase of pairings and bad anime adjacent drawings was such an experience and it's inspiring to look at/look back upon. I also recently did a redraw of some old art and it gave me confidence that I had actually improved quite a bit from the strange high school proportions I thought were peak art back in the day. I'd recommend it to any artist; it's a great reassurance that the little improvements you may not even notice aren't wasted effort.

I've never done any redraws but I feel that just looking at my old art. I still wouldn't call myself good at drawing people or proportions but holy shit, I'm so much better than I was a few years ago.

Just the other day i found this old art of a faerie i did when i was like 11 and it was awful, tube arms and scribble hands and it was a "technology faerie" so she had those cubes every kid doodles in their notebook and straight up binary spelling "wing" on the wings, redrawing it with a whole new design and 7 years of improvement was SO satisfying, and really showed me my improvement :D
