Mamamoo's relationship with choreography is interesting. Until 2019 they choreographed their own videos and stages! Then they started working with Lia Kim and Mina Myong to improve their dance skills because it was a big source of criticism from haters. The performance skills of Mamamoo are all over the place save for vocals and it was funny that you picked Solar and Hwasa as the best dancers because they're generally considered to be the weaker dancers. Solar and Hwasa have the highest levels of serve though so pretty much anything they do looks great. Solar is a very conscientious performer and tends to want everyone to shine equally. When she did a solo song this year(kzbin.info/www/bejne/movKdYppZs52f68) she wore the same outfit as her dancers so attention would be split. Honestly, Hwasa's dance skills are much better in her solo work(kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaWcoYqNibx9gtU) because there's no pressure to match the other members. Moonbyul is a good dancer but tends to prefer the more stylized choreography of male K-Pop performers(kzbin.info/www/bejne/amPLkGOiYqtrnZI) and has gone on record as saying that she doesn't like dancing with a lot of hip movements. 😂 Wheein is considered to be the best dancer(kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4PbcoNvfZqZl9U) in Mamamoo overall but has the least amount of personal charisma because she's very, very shy. Like Hwasa, who is her best friend, Wheein performs better when away from the other members but in her case it's because she doesn't have to hold back her abilities so she doesn't outshine the others.

moonbyul (the rapper) had a shoulder/arm injury, she still performed through promotions but had to stop moving her arm towards the end of them and had it in a splint for a while. She and wheein (long black hair with bangs) are in charge of performance (mamamoo doesn't have official positions other than leader) so that means they are the members that shine a little bit more in dancing, it's a pity byul wasn't at her 100% cause she's great!

Your analysis is very interesting. Your two favorite ladies were actually considered the least dancers of the group. This is why stage presence & charisma plays such an important role rather than just memorizing steps like a machine. These ladies cannot dance the exact same way to save their lives lol. because each put their own personality in the way they move. And this is what makes mamamoo unique. They break the standards of idols. This is just 1 of a hundred ways to follow them.

I'm glad that you touched on it, one of my biggest issues with watching "dancer/choreo reacts to" is that they forget the difference between dancers and performers. The dancers and choreographers 'only' have to dance. Meanwhile the artist have to tone in down as they need to simultaneously do vocals and ~perform~. Especially with k-pop, it's drilled into them for YEARS to have that perfect balancing act. So sure, the movements aren't as exaggerated, but imagine having to sing every note perfectly and interact with the cameras/crowd at the same time? Nearly, if not entirely, impossible.

Personally as a dancer, I think Wheein & Byul are the best dancer in MAMAMOO but if I have to pick one, its Wheein is the best and strongest in the group because of her technique as a dancer and her able to transition every moves smoothly.

I think this is more proof that people should put their "she is the best" in perspective. Best in what? There is never an ultimate best. Sure, Moon and Wheein are great dancers, but there are different skills and qualities to dancing. It makes perfect sense that they excel in some and Hwasa and Solar excel in others. Same for singing. Your ending summary is accurate. Mamamoo is primarily a vocal group but has the capability to perform. Although it's funny that you said moonbyul maybe isn't the strongest dancer but she's considered the dancer of the group along with wheein. You love solar and hwasa! And they're fire as well. You were right, the dancer with the red top is the choreographer Lia Kim and the dancer in the green pants is the choreographer Jiwon Jung. I’m not sure about Jiwon but Lia Kim is a pretty big name in the kpop industry, she has choreographed for many girl/boy groups as well as soloists since the second generation of kpop. After a while watching kpop, you start to pick up some of her signature moves/style of choreography even if you don’t know it was her who choreographed it.

Wheein and Moonbyul are considered the dancers of the group. Wheein is definitely the best dancer but is probably the member with the least facial expressions, but she still controls her facial expressions very well on stage even if they aren’t super charismatic

Mamamoo are performers when live they focus on that not only dance execution, as you said they are singers and what they are known for. They don't use a range of vocals easy as many think ... that's where even Lia said that she tries not to give them choreos that will bother them but also was impresed that even she expected for them to ask for a change or deny her suggestions on this one but they still stick to it and sang live while doing it. Same as HIP. About moonbyul she indeed was injured while dancing, her arm if im not wrong. Wheeing and her are main dancers but also each have their own style, not sexy ones. You can check they solo dance or songs to see how they do it.

the rapper of the group is actually very talented in dance, just not this type! she is more into hip-hop or more "masculine" type choreographies. the girl with bangs is probably the best and most versatile dancer, but her facial expressions aren't as strong. i recommend "eclipse" by moonbyul (the rapper) and wheein (the girl with bangs) 's dance cover of "lo lo".. loved the reaction!

Nice commentary with smart, knowledgeable, unbiased opinions. I don't know much about dance but I think I'll learn a thing or two from you so I subscribed. Thanks for your time & effort, esp for a group that's considered to be the vocal queens rather than the dancing queens of kpop. Mamamoo is a vocal-first group that always sings live and for the first 5 years of their career they did most of their own choreo and kept it fairly simple so they could sing with hand mics. Hip and Aya are the only title tracks where the choreo required headset mics. MMM's performance philosophy prioritizes delivering excellent vocals, connecting with the audience, and having fun on stage rather than delivering pro-level dancing. Not that they can't dance well, obviously, but knife-like choreo is not their main focus. It's interesting that your favorites were Solar (starts on the left) and Hwasa (starts on the right wearing the outfit you liked) since they're generally considered to be weaker dancers than the other two. I think your opinion reflects their charisma & stage presence and the fact that both of them perform with max intensity and project a larger than life persona. Solar always grabs my attention and Hwasa is kpop's fiercest diva on stage. Moonbyul (the rapper) and Wheein are the fastest to learn new choreo and have better technical chops but Wheein has a more reserved personality and Moonbyul's dancing was more low energy and relaxed on Aya than is typical with her, almost certainly due to an arm injury she sustained during Aya promotions. Best wishes on the kickstarter campaign.

Lia Kim is the lady with short hair and the pink top. She's a choreographer for a lot of Kpop groups. If you have time you should definitely check out her work with A.C.E. She choreographed Savage and Undercover and she even dances in the intro video. A.C.E as a group are really strong dancers and have some seriously intense choreo. Especially their new song Goblin. A very BIG detail to take into account. You should watch a Live Stage, in particular I would reccomend Dingga or Destiny cause Mamamoo performing LIVE is like nothing you've seen. They enjoy performing Live so much, it feels like a party everytime. They are always having fun.

I love this video concept and LOVE mamamoo!! Moonbyul has actually hurt her arm during this comeback, that's why she seems so off sometimes.. but she has 2 solos and both are dance heavy. One is Eclipse and the other one is Abscence and both are very different in sound and dance. I would recommend to react/analyze them, since moonbyul is actually one of the "main" dancers in the group (but they also dont have any actual positions anymore, besides the leader position!) And I am defo subscribing :)

I enjoyed this reaction, just fyi the first video you found was not their actual dance practice, it was Mamamoo going to the choreographer's dance studio to do a guest spot, and dance with them, so the students could watch, and then learn the choreo, and then try it. Him saying moonbyul is not a strong dancer makes me sad. If I remember correctly, she had an arm or shoulder injury around this time, plus it's not really her style.
